The title is a bit misleading - as it's not exactly a Chinese Spy Satellite... It was a commercial satellite that Iran purchased from a Chinese company in 2024. This type of satellite is not even in the same class as modern surveillance satellites used by the major powers - however, it is still plenty good enough to provide accurate targeting data for large targets like fixed structures.

Wouldn't a spy satellite be pretty piss poor if it was advertised to the world as a spy satellite?

If the title is not misleading people wouldn't read it /s

Why are iPhones are still being sold in China but Huawei is banned in the US?

Wonderful-Lab7375 3 days ago +20
Apple has to make concessions to the Chinese government to sell their products to China because 💰. For example, data of Chinese users are stored in China instead of the US, some features like AirDrop are disabled etc. Huawei doesn’t have the same incentive to do the same for the US since they already have a huge domestic market. Plus, the US insisted on banning Huawei over national security reasons, aka we’d rather kick them out entirely to prevent bad things instead of letting them in with conditions which may still lead to bad things.

Huawei got kicked out of the US because their routers had serious security issues. They started as a company by totally ripping off Cisco routers. They even booted up Cisco IOS.

Apple refuses to align with the US government the way Microsoft and Google do. Microsoft in particular is straight up a part of the MIC at this point, like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Raytheon.

Tomas2891 3 days ago +2
Apple can refuse the US government while Chinese companies never had the option with the CCP which is why Huawei and many other Chinese companies stay out of the west.

Exactly, America is still a democracy, albeit a flawed one. People and companies make choices against the government even when the government protects them.

And American companies with the NSA/NSO/CIA. Let’s stop with the hypocrisy. If I’m a country and manufacturing products and can install a backdoor, I will. If I can get increased surveillance and deter threats, I will.

If I recall, we provided satellite information to the Taliban to help target Russians in their war in Afganistan. What goes around comes around, I'm sorry to say.

The Taliban weren't a thing at the time.

WTF932 3 days ago +7
Then who were the Russians fighting in Afganistan?
7
fence_sitter 3 days ago +3
The Soviets who were not all Russian were fighting the Mujahideen who were not all Afghani.

WTF932 3 days ago +4
Semantic gymnastics mean squat......bottom line is that we provided satellite information to Russia's enemies that wound up killing Russian soldiers.

Guess that your Google is broken so start here: From Wikopedia: "Key proponents of the initial program were Texas Congressman [Charlie Wilson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Wilson_(Texas_politician)); [Michael G. Vickers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_G._Vickers), a young CIA paramilitary officer; and [Gust Avrakotos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gust_Avrakotos), the CIA's regional head, who developed a close relationship with Wilson. Their strategy was to provide a broad mix of weapons, tactics, and logistics, along with training programs, to enhance the rebels' ability to fight a guerilla war against the Soviets. Initially, to avoid detection of U.S. involvement, the program supplied the rebels only with Soviet-made weaponry. This plan was enabled by the tacit support of Israel, which had captured large stockpiles of Soviet-made weaponry during the [Yom Kippur War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yom_Kippur_War) and agreed to sell them to the CIA clandestinely, as well as [Egypt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egypt), which had recently modernized its army with weapons purchased from Western nations, funneling the older Soviet-made arms to the mujahideen.[^(\[37\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Cyclone#cite_note-37)[^(\[38\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Cyclone#cite_note-38) After 1985, as the Reagan administration announced that it would support anti-Soviet resistance movements globally (in what is now known as the [Reagan Doctrine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reagan_Doctrine)), there was no longer a need to obfuscate the origin of the weaponry; Pentagon senior official, [Michael Pillsbury](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Pillsbury), successfully advocated providing U.S.-made weaponry, including large numbers of [Stinger missiles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIM-92_Stinger), to the Afghan resistance.[^(\[39\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Cyclone#cite_note-heymann-39)^(")

And Trump [leaked the names of spies and informants to Russia](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/05/us/politics/cia-informants-killed-captured.html) during his first term. I'm no Hillary fan, but she was right that Trump is a Russian puppet that endangers us all.

When will people realize that China is a sovereign country that doesn't play sides, will do business with whomever and is extremely open about it? Breaking news! China sold stuff to a country two years ago and they used it on us because we invaded them!

Iran purchased a satellite from China, that's not quite the same thing. Just like Iran still has old US made warplanes.

IRGC bought satellite in late 2024 after it was launched into space, and directed it to monitor bases before and after missile and drone strikes on them The TEE-01B satellite, built and launched by Chinese company Earth Eye Co, was acquired by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Aerospace Force in late 2024 after it was launched into space from China, the report said, citing leaked Iranian military documents. The Iranian military commanders directed the satellite to monitor major US military sites, the newspaper said, citing time-stamped coordinate lists, satellite imagery and orbital analysis. The images were taken in March before and after drone and missile strikes on those locations, FT said. As part of the deal, the IRGC received access to commercial ground stations operated by Emposat, a Beijing-based provider of satellite control and data services provider with a network extending across Asia, Latin America and other regions, according to the report.

Because it is but it isn’t. It is not Chinese intelligence but a Chinese made satellite that was bought in 2024 and it is an older model.

SameCategory546 3 days ago +10
no. But it seems like Iran bought a satellite from a Chinese private company that isn’t even restricted for military use. That’s like saying the US bombed Iran using Chinese rare earth elements.

StrangrDangerRanger 3 days ago -3
I don’t expect much out of Listnookors, but even the most naive should be able to recognize that the Chinese government was involved and approved the sale of this satellite which was so conveniently launched and sold to Iran’s military. Which is fine for China and Iran. They are sovereign states and can do what they want. But it is sad that people either don’t understand how these things work or are so biased by the currently terrible US Admin that they can’t be honest about it.
-3
SameCategory546 3 days ago +4
that is true as well. But did Iran know that the US was going to bomb them when they bought this satellite? Did China know? It would be absolutely amazing foresight to know that US would bomb Iran two years before the fact
4
StrangrDangerRanger 3 days ago +1
Yes, pretty much everyone knew. Iran and US have been in low to high level conflict pretty much continually since the Iranian 1979 revolution. Iran has killed over 1000 Americans in that time and the US has bombed Iran many times. In 2024 alone, US bombed many Iranian proxies in both Iraq and Syria while those Iranian proxies launched hundreds of attacks on US (and Israeli) targets included many US service members injured. Thank goodness none were killed or else conflict would have really exploded.

This isn't really different from the US selling arms to other nations.
