Trump is so desperate to not look like he failed miserably on Iran. He's making money manipulating the market but public perception is so much more important and Iran was an absurd target. He's such an utter failure.

So, imagine you're the President in a world where insider trading is legal for politicians. You want to make money, so you pull a little stock market trick. First, you buy up a bunch of oil stock and oil futures at market price. Then you start a war that will double the price of oil, and you sell. Great start. But as the war goes on, you think, how can I make more money? And then you remember you can "short" oil, borrowing money and owing people oil in return, to make money on the end of the war, too. But why wait? The stock market shifts when there's so much as a *rumor* the war will end. So you short oil, announce a deal is close, then buy all the oil you can at a lower price, pay back your short, and then sell the oil again after Iran corrects you. And you can pretty much keep doing it for so long as there's public speculation about the war.
