As an American, I was told there were checks and balances in place to prevent *gestures broadly at everything*. Turns out not so much.

Hey I've seen this circle before somewhere! The US gives money to Israel. Israel uses money to bribe US politicians. US gives more money to Israel. You guys should listen to the interview of that intelligence Director who resigned. He mentioned that Trump and Hegseth are overriding US intelligence, and taking Israel's intelligence instead for decision making

I just saw a statistic on a PBS video - 50% of American's don't know which party currently controls Congress
21
-LabApprehensive- Mar 23, 2026 +19
Thats because 70% of our media companies + twitter are heavily i vested in making it look like every bad thing that happens is 100% because of the democrats. Texas has been running the same play for 30 years never mind that the GOP has run that state for 30 years.

There used to be, until Congress got lazy and basically handed over war powers to the executive branch. This is what happens when your legislature basically refuses to take responsibility for doing their literal jobs. Edit: for all you people who haven't been paying any attention, this happened decades ago and has been ongoing for my entire lifetime.
454
fazelanvari Mar 22, 2026 +49
Congress abdicated their war powers to the executive, because they don't want to defend their vote for war to their constituents. But they still want to go to war, so they just let the President do what he wants until the PR gets bad enough at home.
49
lowercaset Mar 22, 2026 +173
Also the tarriff bullshit was only possible for the same reason. Lazy congresses of the past gave the president extraconstitutional power that should've been theirs alone.

Which is wild to me. He initiates tariffs that are later found to be illegal by the courts. But since congress gave zero resistance to the tariffs initially, are they not at fault for inflated prices too? I know nothing will happen but man, all of these people need to be below the prison.

Hey, as long as they know in advance how to adjust their own stock portfolios why should they care?
12
cagelight Mar 22, 2026 +27
Longer than decades. Congress has been eroding their power esentially non-stop since the formation of the US for some ungodly incomprehensible reason. A lot of recent bullshit can be traced to even the civil war era congress. This is, in fact, f****** EXACTLY why George Washington didn't want parties. Because party politics erodes power balance.

Not this Congress - we haven't actually declared war in forever. This "policy" is getting close to a century old
37
amm5061 Mar 22, 2026 +40
The War Powers Act was passed over Nixon's veto, and that was the last time I can think of that Congress actually made an effort to really take back any degree of their own responsibility. The number of people responding who clearly don't have a clue how we got here is staggering.
40
Mitosis Mar 22, 2026 +25
You've got 20 year olds now who have known nothing but anti-Trump rhetoric for their entire lives recognizing anything in the outside world. Which, independent of the legitimacy of anti-Trump rhetoric, seems to have given them no other historical perspective on anything about how he ever won and is able to do anything.
25

>This is what happens when your legislature basically refuses to take responsibility for doing their literal jobs. It's also what happens when those same politicians are reelected again and again and . . .
8
Named_after_color Mar 22, 2026 +4
It's kind of insane that instead of compromising to achieve some sort of middle ground both parties were like "let's give all power to one guy who's got a 50 50 chance to be on our side, that'll work."

27
bearbrannan Mar 22, 2026 +62
Checks and balances don't work when you give one party control of the house, the senate, the judiciary and the white house. Bonus points when their allies take over all the media as well. Double bonus points when Americans also don't check someone, who tries to overthrow an election the first time. Stop blaming Congress and start blaming your friends and family that voted for this.
62
No_Wrongdoer466 Mar 22, 2026 +30
No... its checks and balances don't work when people dont honor their oath, are being blackmailed, and take bribes...

Citizens United and other terrible judicial rulings made bribery of Congress legal. Therefore, billionaires and corporations have full legislative and regulatory capture. The US Congress does not report to the American people, they just 1) take bribes (legal), 2) trade on inside information (legal), and 3) steal(not legal, but who will stop them?) The only solution, one that will lead to the solution of almost every other problem, is to take money out of politics. It's a foundational issue. (along with breaking up media conglomerates that propagandize the public and distort the truth) Without that, we're all screwed.
4
MikuEmpowered Mar 22, 2026 +35
It DOES work when done right. The premise is based on the idea that legislative, executive, and judicial all want their power. So if one branch is seizing power, the other two will fight back to maintain theirs. This is why until recently. Both side went out of their way to select a non-partial SC nominee. Like staffing the bench with a blatant bias judge is not the norm. What's not foreseen is one side holding super majority, and then proceed to just hand power over to the executive. And argubly what's even more unforseen is people actively voting against their own interest. And that they will vote these people out. No one anticipate a fking cult. This is why it's such a problem. When all 3 branches follow a single person, and when the population is split on the guy. The US effectively have a king with no way to remove him. This is also why they're readying up for mid terms. They need all 3 branch as majority to keep the train going.
35
bigtice Mar 22, 2026 +22
That's why this has been in the works for decades -- in order to get that cult or similar people that would actively vote against their own self interests, you have to erode education. Because as you correctly alluded to and can put more succinctly, a democracy only works as well as the people that actively work to support it. The checks and balances require people to work in a coordinated, unbiased fashion -- but now that we have people, in all levels, operating in selfish, malicious and essentially treasonous manners, we end up exactly where we are with people thinking that things just magically worked on their own.
22
From_Deep_Space Mar 22, 2026 +8
> What's not foreseen is one side holding super majority, and then proceed to just hand power over to the executive. This was absolutely foreseen. Our very first president famously spoke in his farewell address about his concerns that political parties would start to gain more influence and loyalty than the branches of govt, so that politicians would start to betray the interests of their branch for the benefit of their party. >“The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty.” This is why civics education is important. Because we have absolutely been here before. Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it, while those who do study it are doomed to stand by and watch helplessly. >“Promote, then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.” https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/resources/pdf/Washingtons_Farewell_Address.pdf?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

If Trump was president during the height of the Cold War, there is a good chance that humanity would have been wiped out in wholesale nuclear annihilation. Every step he takes to escalate this conflict is an existential threat to humanity. There are no more adults at the table anymore.

Nah. Powell's '71 memo is the literal architecture of our downfall, it's what spawned the heritage foundation and federalist society and laid out the roadmap to judicial capture as a method for resourced, minority pro-business interests to defeat labor movements. the gablers and the ailes memo are also big parts of it... Gingrich really ramped up the temperature.

Trump thinks they are playing a game of chicken. That if he beats on his chest and frown Iran will back out knowing USA is the real deal. Iran is not playing any game, it's been backed into a wall and is willing to kill anyone and do anything. We have a narcisist who hates to lose face thinking he is playing chicken with a suicidal murderer.
526
JuDGe3690 Mar 22, 2026 +119
> Iran is not playing any game, it's been backed into a wall and is willing to kill anyone and do anything. Exactly. And this is basic strategy known for years. *See* Sun Tzu, *The Art of War*, Ch. VII. "Maneuvering," § 36: > **When you surround an army, leave an outlet free.** > This does not mean that the enemy is to be allowed to escape. The object, as Tu Mu puts it, is "to make him believe that there is a road to safety, and thus prevent his fighting with the courage of despair." Tu Mu adds pleasantly: "After that, you may crush him." > **Do not press a desperate foe too hard.** > Ch\`en Hao quotes the saying: "Birds and beasts when brought to bay will use their claws and teeth." Chang Yu says: "If your adversary has burned his boats and destroyed his cooking-pots, and is ready to stake all on the issue of a battle, he must not be pushed to extremities." Ho Shih illustrates the meaning by a story taken from the life of Yen-ch\`ing. That general, together with his colleague Tu Chung-wei was surrounded by a vastly superior army of Khitans in the year 945 A.D. The country was bare and desert-like, and the little Chinese force was soon in dire straits for want of water. The wells they bored ran dry, and the men were reduced to squeezing lumps of mud and sucking out the moisture. Their ranks thinned rapidly, until at last Fu Yen-ch\`ing exclaimed: "We are desperate men. Far better to die for our country than to go with fettered hands into captivity!" A strong gale happened to be blowing from the northeast and darkening the air with dense clouds of sandy dust. To Chung-wei was for waiting until this had abated before deciding on a final attack; but luckily another officer, Li Shou-cheng by name, was quicker to see an opportunity, and said: "They are many and we are few, but in the midst of this sandstorm our numbers will not be discernible; victory will go to the strenuous fighter, and the wind will be our best ally." Accordingly, Fu Yen-ch\`ing made a sudden and wholly unexpected onslaught with his cavalry, routed the barbarians and succeeded in breaking through to safety. They have no other option. The US is the main focus atm, because Trump is such a blowhard. Israel isn't going to just let Iran live in peace if the US and Iran do establish another peace agreement. They'll kill and kill and steal land like they have done for decades. The erosion of internal law at the hands of Israel means that no real diplomatic solution exists.
11
mooncake6 Mar 22, 2026 +1215
And the following excerpt was reported by Al Jazeera: “If the United States carries out its threats against Iran’s power plants, the following punitive actions will be taken immediately: The Strait of Hormuz will be completely closed and will not reopen until our damaged power plants are rebuilt. All power plants and the energy and information‑technology infrastructure of Israel will be widely targeted. All similar companies in the region that have American shareholders will be completely destroyed. Power plants in regional countries hosting US bases will be considered legitimate targets.” This c*** really is going to start WW3…

It's not going to be a third world war. The US doesn't have the industrial capacity to fight any kind of peer war. It's just going to accelerate the process of China stepping in as the new dominant industrial and financial power as US falls further into decline. Just like the US did to the British empire, and the British empire did to the Spanish empire and the Dutch.

Critically important to remember that this is not being done for the United States. This war is for Israel. I mean, that's the point of War Crimes being bad. Too many people think it means they get caught by war police and go to war court. No. You avoid doing war crimes because you tell your opponent "This is on the table now" You bring a spiked baseball bat to a street fight? Well the other guy was fine using his fists, but SINCE YOU INSIST he doesn't mind pulling out his own spiked bat. You don't bomb hospitals, because the other guy can bomb hospitals too and you just put yours on the acceptable targets list. F*** around, find out.

Yes, if the US really goes scorched earth on Iran, Iran will go scorched earth on the region. The Iranians really love tit for tat attacks, and they are extremely predictable like that, so you would think even Trump would have figured out by now that the way to not escalate this war any further is to not attack them more, and particularly to not attack important civilian infrastructure like energy and oil plants. But apparently not. Or maybe he doesn’t give a shit about the consequences, like the psychopath he obviously is.
278
CobblerMoney9605 Mar 22, 2026 +171
Trump has never faced consequences; for him, they do not exist.
171
TimHung931017 Mar 22, 2026 +19
I mean, he gets to go home and eat the same food, drive the same vehicles, and live his same life. Minor or even 100% increases on goods/services dont impact the rich at all like it impacts regular people. So to expect him to be empathetic and think of others is foolish at this point, hes just trying to distract from the Epstein files while profiting off his Israeli generated war
19
Vagrant0012 Mar 22, 2026 +53
Unfortunately trump only knows one tactic the strongman you don't do y we obliterate x. His tactic only works when your opponent is a rational actor. Unfortunately for trump iran doesnt give a f*** if that happens. Also trump is doing a great job at making the us be the party that escalates and iran being the party that responds to escalation terrible look for the us overall.
53
RedTulkas Mar 23, 2026 +6
Iran is a rational actor they know that if they do not retaliate they will be annihilated

100% and now BIBI is trying to convince Europe to get involved by lying about Iran hitting Europe.
79
macaroni_chacarroni Mar 22, 2026 +33
and when Europe gets more involved and they help turn Iran into Libya, guess where 30 million refugees from the region will end up? And when the Iranian state collapses and it's now 500 radical warlords, would any of them think about taking revenge on European civilians in European capitals? No way! :O :O
33
Evasionexpert Mar 23, 2026 +13
You could say all this is by design. Destroy the middle east then flood your other enemies with unwanted refugees/migrants. Kill two birds with one stone. There’s only one w***** in all of this and it definitely isn’t America or Europe.
13
wamj Mar 22, 2026 +21
This is why Netanyahu wanted Trump to win. He knew he could convince him to attack Iran, and he knew he won’t admit he’s done something wrong.
21
eliota1 Mar 22, 2026 +182
Did no one in the administration game out the possible responses to this tactic before Trump made his threat? Not one person wondered what the Iranians could possibly do in response?
182
svasalatii Mar 22, 2026 +149
6 months prior to the onset of this "3day winning operation" Trump administration fired all experts from the Oil and Gas Dept. Those were the people who modeled this very specific scenario. The people who had connections at the Energy Ministries of the Gulf states... Now, the Trump admin simply doesn't know who to call.
149
Rhiis Mar 22, 2026 +18
As if they would call an expert. That would imply that they don't know what they're doing. Which, of course, they don't know what they're doing.
18
CobblerMoney9605 Mar 22, 2026 +43
It was gamed out by previous administrations. That's why no one has done it up until now. Anyone with a brain understands it will be a global disaster.
43
Unbentmars Mar 22, 2026 +12
Honestly they didn’t even need to game it out, this has been gamed out by a dozen administrations and ALL of them have seen the writing on the wall and not gotten involved for exactly these reasons I guarantee you every single bit of documented plans the Trump admin has on hand from prior admins called all of this out and these numbnuts not only didn’t do their own plan but also ignored every other one It wouldn’t surprise me if they just asked ChatGPT or f****** grok
12
LetsGetElevated Mar 22, 2026 +25
This administration thinks game theory is when you pretend real war is just Call of Duty, no chance they were running any models that didn’t include outright domination and total acquiescence
25
AlbertoRossonero Mar 22, 2026 +9
By all accounts the generals and US intelligence were all against this but Trump has pretty much surrounded himself with pro Israeli sycophants. Joe Kent in his interview with Tucker Carlson said they weren’t included in the talks to launch the offensive and that there was basically no objection to it from the people he listens to.
9
Impressive-Weird-908 Mar 22, 2026 +12
Have you ever seen what happens when people disagree with Trump? I guarantee they were all telling the emperor how nice his clothes look.
12

Every war game we ever had said Iran would do this. The previous Joint Chief of Staff told Trump this is a bad idea.

If this really does spiral out of control similar to Vietnam, at what point do American citizens actually stand up for themselves or is that not even a possibility?

Pretty sure this is gonna spiral out of control *worse* than Vietnam.

A draft. But I’m not sure that would be the final straw either since the upper middle and upper classes would inevitably find a way to circumvent shipping their kids off to a meaningless war.
21
loki2113 Mar 23, 2026 +4
Way back to the civil war where you could pay a fee to not get drafted Not the most popular law strangely enough

Not a single person in the states is going to actually care until they see a significant decrease in standards of living, they have made that plain and clear. They love to cry about it online, but almost none of them will do a single f****** thing until they start losing their retirements/homes or a draft happens and their kids start dying. It's all a horse and pony show and they eat it up like a 5 star meal.
24
Dave91277 Mar 22, 2026 +35
Is there not one person in the US working on stopping the f****** idiot from bringing the world down for all of us normal, peace loving people. I cannot wait for the obituary. I’ve never in my life been so sick of a person.
35
vonnegutism25 Mar 22, 2026 +54
I still can’t believe Americans bought ‘Iran is a one man regime’ and ‘People will rise against the regime’ lies of Israel.
54
SallyWebsterMetcalfe Mar 22, 2026 +22
Americans also think that Trump is a one man regime and once he’s gone things will go back to normal.
22
vonnegutism25 Mar 22, 2026 +7
Then Americans should rise against Trumpist Regime 😂
7
ProFeces Mar 23, 2026 +4
I assure you, many of us do not believe that at all. Trump was just the means to get their guy into the place for them to carry out their agendas. It's the entire administration; Trump is just the dementia-ridden and incoherent fall guy they want to use to catch all the blame.

The idea you can intimidate religious fanatics in the first place is so dumb. You can probably argue that the US is now run by religious fanatics too.

gartstell Mar 22, 2026 +34
Although, on the other hand, their response is entirely rational. Objectively, the plan of their aggressor, Israel, is the destruction of the Iranian nation. Not regime change, not taking away an asset or a piece of territory: the destruction of the state, dragging its people centuries backward. They see it, because that’s what it is, as an existential threat, and they have decided to fight with everything they’ve got. Realistically, they have no alternative, because they cannot even surrender. Israel does not want an allied government; it wants to socially destroy its neighbors, in a senseless and delusional colonialist ambition that is already completely unviable.
34
padizzledonk Mar 22, 2026 +18
Im glad more and more people see this for what it is So what theyre a brutal regime, we have relations with tons of brutal shitty governments, the entire region thats being attacked are on that list of shitty countries tbh that do the same shit Iran does to lesser degrees and greater degrees in terms of Israel....they murdered a 100k people in the last 2y, mostly women and children and are currently starving 2 Million more and denying them water and sewage and even shelter, they turned the region into a lunar landscape.....dont f****** talk to me anymore about how Iran is too crazy and brutal to have cordial and productive relations with, i no longer want to hear it
18
mEllowMystic Mar 22, 2026 +40
Americans are using the idiot Trump to cover for the desire to destabilize China's hold in the region. The act of feeding into religious fanaticism is a disguise of public consent. American imperialism is running and planning these actions.

It is not just fanaticism yeah fanatics make good soldier. But ideally bombing civilians randomly in a country often doesn't sit well with the citizens.

One small difference, trump is a coward and the others are not. They will be killed no matter what and trump knows no one can hurt him in his cozy home. That’s why it’s easy for him to say stupid bullshit like this.
5
RODjij Mar 22, 2026 +64
Iran doesn't need the global economy and markets to function which is why they dont have many issues bombing energy infrastructure. America does need these things to be constantly flowing though. The US doesn't hold the cards here and Iran knows that.

G_UK Mar 22, 2026 +76
The best thing that could happen right now would be for the US/ Israel to walk away from the steaming mess they have created, for other sensible countries to resolve. I hate that, but anything America says/ does makes things worse. America and Israel are the biggest threats to a more peaceful world.

All the refugees that would ensue from that should be given asylum in America. *Should*. If Iran targets desalination plants alone it would be a global disaster in so many different ways.
32
Epyon214 Mar 22, 2026 +22
Yet doing so is the logical path forward to end the war. The Gulf Coast Countries cannot survive 5 months of no food and water, and with their collapse comes the collapse of the petrodollar, with the USA and Israel's economies collapsing shortly after. If you want sanity to return, get me in power
22
succesful_deception Mar 22, 2026 +15
The logical path forward to end the war for Iran is to keep doing what they're doing (making Trump and his admin look out of their depth and making Israel look even more cartoonishly evil than they already were) until the war becomes untenable for the US government. They don't want to do this either as it's not good for anyone, it will only happen if the US ramps it up even further. That being said, yeah it's realistic that this will happen.. and it will affect us all really, really badly. There's no one to keep Trump in check.
15

America's next president will be the one to oversee the resolution of this conflict, while the Republicans will blame the Democrats and say Trump would have ended it under better terms for America. History will view Trump as one of America's worst, weakest, and least diplomatic presidents. The Epstein files will come to light only after Trump's passing. We will barely avoid a third global war but America will be thrust into another recession for a good decade to follow, and tensions with the middle east will remain for the foreseeable future. Can't wait for this administration to leave office and for the country to be steered in a better direction in terms of research, healthcare, and the American way of life. Otherwise, I see mass emigration out of America and the fall of democracy.
5

LystAP Mar 22, 2026 +39
They are going to use nuclear weapons. I feel it. I can’t quite decide if it’s the U.S. or Israel that does it first. In the past I would move Israel to the top of the line when considering extreme events in the Middle East, but now Trump got a good weight to firing them off first and breaking the nuclear taboo.
39
rok1982 Mar 22, 2026 +36
I think a lot analysts think that Israel will use a low yield nuke or conduct a "nuke test" dangerously close to Iran. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter. A nuke is still a nuke and God awful if one is used.
36
FallenDanish Mar 22, 2026 +19
If nukes are used, that’s a line crossed that you can never go back on. We could very easily get nuked in response (by any number of nuclear-capable nations on/off Iran’s side), and when that happens, it’s MAD time.
19
TiberiusCornelius Mar 22, 2026 +8
