I forget the exact wording but when an AWS data center was damaged a week ago, their official announcement was notable due to being overly vague. They don’t want to offend anyone so a missile strike was described as a facility issue or some such.

Well, technically it was a _planned_ rapid disassembly of the server. There was just a communication error between the planners and the regular server maintenance crew

This is the 'official announcement' referred to in the [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/amazon-cloud-unit-flags-issues-bahrain-uae-data-centers-amid-iran-strikes-2026-03-02/) article. It's the AWS status page: https://health.aws.amazon.com/health/status It actually mentions drone strikes.
50
JortsJuggalo420 Apr 3, 2026 +42
I work in web monitoring where we regularly reference status pages of third-party services like AWS. I can't stress enough how wild it is to see drone strikes mentioned on a service's status page.

The Iranians know exactly what they’re doing. They’re going to keep this up. Trump is desperate to get out of there, and they’re going to make it plain he’s retreating. That 1-1.5 million per tanker transit fee would be 20% of their annual GDP in new revenue. This is America’s biggest fuckup in decades.

Been obvious he’s a fool since he started running. The aptitude I thought he had was how he would invent a nickname for each of his opponents to clear the field. But bullying and belittling political opponents does not a good leader make.

The whole Trump brand is win now, blame others later. Like, even in our personal lives there are things that would feel good and awesome to do in the moment but are clearly not a way to live life. You could punch your boss and quit theatrically but then you have no job. You might want to do blow and f*** a stripper but then your girlfriend finds out and breaks up with you. Trump just wants to 'win' and the second he isn't winning anymore it is somebody else's fault. And for some reason that is genuinely inexplicable to me there are MILLIONS of people that play along at this blatant, repeating farce.
19
jert3 Apr 2, 2026 +42
Only a complete and utter moron would think Trump has anywhere near average intelligence. Sure, the only real job the child rapist ever had before becoming President was being an actor, so I get that some could be fooled. But no one with more than a few dozen brain cells would consider Cap'n Clownshow a 'Machiavellian brain box.'

youdoitimbusy Apr 2, 2026 +27
I think their entire annual military budget is like 10billion dollars. But we gave them more than that by unsanctioning the ships that were already at sea. None of what has happened is how the military normally operates. You have all your contingency plans planned, and assets in place for said plans. We have been winging it with zero backup plan for what happens if the uprising doesn't work? The government is so inept they hoped the Kurds would fight their war, while vocally telling Iran so they could preemptively bomb the Kurds and make them say no thank you America. In war you want your enemy to react to your moves. But it's the US who has been reacting to all of Iran's plans. You add in the geographical advantage, and it's clear who has the highest percentage chance to win this. Hint, it's not the US.
27
GoodPiexox Apr 3, 2026 +18
> is so inept they hoped the Kurds would fight their war, this was after Trump betrayed the Kurd alliance 4 years earlier in Syria and left them to die. Anyone would be a fool to work with Trump at this point.
18
EyeSavant Apr 3, 2026 +10
> I think their entire annual military budget is like 10billion dollars. But we gave them more than that by unsanctioning the ships that were already at sea. My understanding * Iran GDP, approx $440bn * Iran military spending about 2% of GDP So that makes $9Bn military budget, so yeah. 140 ships a day (approximate pre war amount) at $2m a shot is about $100Bn a year.

I wonder if the GCC is prepared to pay that or if the war will continue and spread if the U.S dipped. Probably see UAE dumping a whole lot dumping a whole lot of money and slave labor into a pipeline too. Wonder how fast they can build one if they went all in with no regard to their slaves safety

gildedbluetrout Apr 2, 2026 +112
I mean we’re talking one fifth of the global energy supply. That’s a f****** lot. The main fertiliser hubs in India are shutting down. It’s a chokehold for Helium as well. And ASML say they have enough helium to get to June. Thats keystone chip manufacture. If the straits stay closed the springs are going to start coming out of the global economy in a very real way. I don’t think some pipe construction is going to fix that. Donald Trump is a stupid fat c*** and he’s fucked everything up.
112
HalfADozenOfAnother Apr 2, 2026 +23
Crazy that OPEC is increasing production by 200k BPD. You'd think they'd be sitting on massive stocks and needing to cut production
23
4Yk9gop Apr 3, 2026 +15
$2 million dollars sounds like a lot until you realize a tanker can hold 2 million barrels of oil. That's a toll of approx. $1 a barrel, which is a lot better than no barrels getting shipped because they are getting blown up.
15
CrayZ_Squirrel Apr 3, 2026 +11
That's the proposed fee exactly.  $1 per barrel.

"This is America’s biggest fuckup in decades." And we haven't even gotten to the Islamic extremist fallout yet. The longer this goes on the more support other anti-west groups in region get, the more recruiting, the more financing. This just strengthens groups who will eventually carry out terror attacks.
178
LaserRunRaccoon Apr 3, 2026 +15
Excuse me, but "the west" aside from the USA really wants no part in this. Which really shows just how big of a fuckup this actually is, to start something like this while the USA is threatening, abandoning, begging from, and complaining about it's traditional allies.
15

In the next ten years the young population impacted will be of age to stage some real damage. We will be in dire straits at that time and this child f***** president will be long dead. Hope his family is impacted for generations, that gene pool needs to be trimmed out of the human race.
61
binzoma Apr 3, 2026 +40
the reason there havent been terror attacks yet is because Iran knows the game they're playing despite everything, they have general support to their side that the US started a dumb needless war of aggression and iran is acting in rational self defence blowing up a world cup qualifier or an mlb game would certainly do a decent bit of damage to the US/west, but it'd also immediately unite the west against iran as a bad guy. their best strat is continuing what they're doing. target big tech, target oil oligarchs, and be generally economically rational re the straight and using that as a tool to hurt the US. the world broadly is very ok with all of that outside of the US if the US crosses lines in iran/starts a ground war/destroys water infrastructure etc, I expect a terror campaign will start very very quickly. esp since command and control of IRGC and its terror groups is getting weaker and weaker by the day as more 'middle management' layer are killed.
40
ChroniclesOfSarnia Apr 3, 2026 +7
I agree with this 100%
7
b0w3n Apr 3, 2026 +5
> their best strat is continuing what they're doing. They are doing it so well that the line is essentially the crazification factor right now. That's all that seems to support this war inside the US. (I think it dropped to exactly 27% finally) His cabinet (Though I think it was mostly just Miller) and the dumbfuck congresscritters (Like Graham) told him this was a surefire way to ramp up his approval.

When there’s a giant spike in oil prices in the eastern hemisphere, guess who all those countries need to buy oil from to maintain basic operations? Russia.
11
Zuwxiv Apr 3, 2026 +14
Yeah, the big w***** here is Russia. Basically the only thing that sustains their economy is oil, and without doing anything, the price just doubled. Just in theory, if you were Russia two months ago and could do whatever you wanted? You'd love to see the US start a war in Iran to close the strait. Weird how often that works out like that.

They have been around in that area for thousands and thousands of years. Built massive empire. Laid base to a lot of sciences, maths, arts and religions. Just because white supremacists in USA thought they're stupid sand goblins, doesn't mean that they don't know how to fight for their survival. They even spelled it out - if we're going down, we're taking down as much of your future and present with us as we possibly can. Alas, arrogance and bigotry won. Iran is well capable of drawing it out as long as they feel like it on their own terms. What's Trump gonna do, nuke em?... then what?... they got fissile material too. Dirty bombs aren't beyond their capabilities already.
10
MaximumPepper123 Apr 2, 2026 +33
I'm worried Trump will get mad and nuke Iran, thinking it is the easy fix to this fiasco, which will open the door for Russia to nuke Ukraine, and who knows what happens after that.

_aviemore_ Apr 2, 2026 +15
The way things are going it's very uncharacteristic of him not to use a "small" one. They'll spin it as a win.  Silly things are happening. Hegseth just fired a top general - who knows what the general did not agree to do.  I don't think American people are powerful enough to take this back election time. Power is too concentrated by the GOP. Military, all agencies run by Yes Man. Heck, DoJ is compromised and that's pretty much all is needed for a rogue government to keep staying. I don't believe they'll let this go now.  The world has to accept a hard regime USA for the time being. It's not like the first country to do so. There will be economic fall outs and a new world order with the collapse of petrodollar.  Finally, Europe Vs USA is very much obvious now. US might leave NATO and station soldiers in Greenland. After that maybe Canada. Who is going to stop the big bully? Russia being where it is and USA being where it is, Europe needs some clever manoeuvring.
15

If they host U.S. military/intel then those are the closest enemy targets Iran can hit. For all the tax payer dollars the US spends on defense, it's greatest defense is that it it really far away from any adversarial nations/combatants. So if they start lobbing missiles and bombs into Iran, Iran has to lob missiles and bombs at the nearest US targets. If there aren't any nearby targets their next best move is to make life difficult for the neighbors who helping/allied with the US. If the US takes out critical Iranian infrastructure (like refineries or desalination plants) Iran will hit similar infrastructure in US allied neighbors.
97
SadZealot Apr 2, 2026 +43
Those countries also host US military bases and resources to get protection from the American military in situations exactly like this. It's funny to see how those countries react to the knowledge that no matter how much you give for implied security guarantees, when missiles are actually flying Americans protect themselves.
43
Eastern_Hornet_6432 Apr 2, 2026 +40
And Trump thinks Europe is scared of the USA pulling out of NATO. For all intents and purposes, the USA has already quit NATO. Does anyone really believe the USA would provide meaningful assistance in the event of a Russian invasion of Europe?

Salford1969 Apr 2, 2026 +35
I doubt Israel comes out unscathed between the war crime accusations and whatever friends they had in the area might not be so friendly anymore being caught in the middle of this. The USA has basically lost any trust from allies so neither comes out the same after this.

Dubai. Serious risk management reconsiderations coming soon for that city. Why continue to invest if you are one missile/drone strike away from business impact? Or even as an individual, why continue to live and invest in a city that’s prone to kinetic attacks?
941
SaintBellyache Apr 3, 2026 +69
It’s also quite a risk to invest in a city that completely relies on bombable desal plants.
69

171
mothtoalamp Apr 2, 2026 +287
The war is overwhelmingly unpopular in the US. Attacking inside the territorial United States would change that massively and rapidly. Part of what makes American thinking go the way it does is the perceived immunity from nation-state violence on their home turf. Even when you go scorched earth, you don't interrupt your enemy when they're making a mistake.
287
mrblahblahblah Apr 3, 2026 +56

56
Dorgamund Apr 3, 2026 +50
I agree, I doubt attacks on US soil are likely. Iran obviously has a well considered strategic plan, and is carrying it out to great effect. I don't think they are stupid enough to jeopardize that.
50
icalledthecowshome Apr 2, 2026 +108
Targeting us military facilities physically on mainland is likely not within Irans scope of ability. And even Iran has publicly stated they have no ill will towards american citizens. Most sane governments knows better than to rile up a nations citizen per se, 911 comes to mind when a nation is out for blood.
108
LaughingGaster666 Apr 3, 2026 +74
Iran isn't stupid. They should know that any attack on American soil is one way to quickly make Americans actually want this war. Lack of support is the biggest reason why Trump isn't doing a ground invasion. This isn't like 2003 where it was piss easy for Team Bush to fool the American people.
74
mardigrasmoker Apr 2, 2026 +42
I expect an attack on US soil but how are they going to get drones in range of the mainland? They have to get explosives into the country, assemble the drone, and launch it. They sure as hell aren’t getting a drone into US airspace from outside. On the flip side; most US citizens see Iran as the victim. Once they kill US citizens on US soil that goes out the window.
42
darkspy13 Apr 2, 2026 +28
The last thing I saw out of Iran pre-war was US flags being burned in the streets.... Iran was not doing a good job of making Americans think they were the good guys. They also were shooting protestors etc. I do not like our current administration but you would be crazy to think the average American sees Iran as a victim in this. That being said. A ground invasion would be very unpopular because most Americans (from my perspective) see the Iran war as a waste of time. If something happened on the mainland like a drone strike on a mall.... Public opinion will quickly become "how many boots can we get on the ground? NATO! We NEED payback! blah blah."... A can of worms Iran does not want to open IMO.
28
AnyWays655 Apr 3, 2026 +20
No one thinks theyre the good guys, but like, you cant go bombing other countries (especially civilian infrastructure) to pump the economy. And you certainly cant do it, then fail to improve the economy. AND if you could AND HAD TO attack foreign governments to fix there government (not even joking about attacking civilian infrastructure) theres atleast like, four I would have preferred before Iran.

Imagine being the network engineer that had to work regularly with this data center and they laid you off yesterday. 1 - They’re most likely scrambling to talk to at least some of the 30k they fired. 2 - I would have them groveling to pay me hourly on contract work. Or a significant pay increase to return.
210
FadedFromWhite Apr 3, 2026 +70
Funny enough, I actually have a friend who is a network engineer for them. They're on a small team but 25% of it was included in the mass layoff. He was secretly hoping he was going to be let go. Their 'on call' hours are absolutely insane. And now their windows/shifts are getting even worse. Awful company to work for

Standard commercial insurance does not cover damages because of war or civil unrest. Guess it depends on how likely they thought to be targeted if they actually had war risk insurance.

active2fa Apr 2, 2026 +33
Fun fact: before the war announcement was made by UAE how they will host data centers for various entities investments totalling $100B. Saudi was around $50B and rest of GCC around $5B. Ain't gonna happen. US has a energy deficit of 92GW which rounds up to $5T. While China has energy surplus (mostly renewables) close to 40%. Someone forgot to do the math of this war and AI stocks.

AppleTree98 Apr 2, 2026 +5
On a tanget but it hasn't paid rent for the room in my brain. The US government doesn't insure their systems as it is just cheaper to buy the system or platform or building or vehicle.

They also paid waaaay too much money for Warner Bros and levered their position in Oracle to do it. The Warner Bros deal is so bad that it actually might not ever be profitable

We are in an extremely tightly controlled information environment. We likely won’t know the true extent of damages to US bases, equipment, and infrastructure/commerce for years to come. Ditto damage in Israel. Israel has a whole department to control what is allowed to be reported. Gulf states (and Iran) imprison folks who take videos and images. It’s an all-out information war, in which both sides are projecting strength and hiding/obscuring loss and damage. From our vantage point, we see news and reports skewed to the benefit of our military/gov. In my lifetime, I don’t recall ever experiencing such a tightly controlled information environment.

juggy_11 Apr 3, 2026 +19
True. You can even see a lot of bots in this very thread trying to control the narrative.
19
cXs808 Apr 3, 2026 +13
Iran doesn't care as much as the gulf states/israel/america though. The world knows they are currently holding the oil supply hostage, its inescapable knowledge. The world also knows that they are willing and able to take the gulf states down with them, that too is inescapable knowledge. That combination alone makes them a massive threat for israel/usa because even if you win, you lose.

Dubai has been denying anything is happening. Even their citizens are like, "We're perfectly safe, it's fine here!" as missiles are heard overhead.

octowussy Apr 2, 2026 +35
My brother moved to Dubai less than a year ago because he's an idiot and while normally quiet on social media, he's been posting a lot of out-of-character "everything's fine! I'd definitely tell you if that weren't the case!" updates lately.

Comment if he over compensates any harder, the UAE will red flag him

Unless you run the gold & silver trading platforms for the comex and LBMA. Their data centers seem to have 12 hour outages for air conditioning issues everytime they are called to deliver silver they sold but don’t have. Sorry off topic rant about our corrupt banks and financial system

What we learned from this is that a president can go to not-war for up to 60 days anytime they want without approval. We need to make changes to this immediately.

I'm sure the repubs will change it to 600 days

No need. Say the war is over. Wait for the other side -- which disagrees -- to attack again. Say a new war has begun! Congress will *never* see through this cunning ruse (well, *this* Congress will never care in the first place, let's see if they bother with the ruse).

Wonder who gave the IRGC updated satellite photos showing where that data center is? Showing fighter jets on base? Trump still won't admit Russia is aiding Iran when the evidence is beyond obvious.
157
imtourist Apr 2, 2026 +78
Data centers don't tend to move around, unless they are in shipping containers. But yeah Russia is definitely helping them.

There are a bunch of public satellites available with surprisingly up to date pictures, IIRC some of the paid services are only _hours_ out of date

UnrealisticOcelot Apr 3, 2026 +6
Air bases and data centers don't just walk over to a new location. Anyone involved in military stuff from any country in the Middle East knows we have planes at those bases. Iran has their own Intel and shares with other countries just like everyone else. If a country wants to know where data centers are it's really not hard to find them, they have the resources to do so. For an air base you can just send out a volley of drones targeting the aprons they usually park on and hope to get lucky.
