I care more about how something feels and what it actually looks like than what name is attached to it. If it’s timeless, and fits into my life quietly, that’s enough. A lot of designer pieces feel like they’re meant to be seen… and I’ve never really dressed for attention. AND most of it is not even really cute it's just a name on it
I would definitely buy high quality, handmade from small local businesses but ya definitely not luxury nonsense, I don't get the hype....

Yes I definitely would support small or local businesses to spend more with them over major brands

Our house is primarily about utility. If we can't use it, we don't need it.
My wife even goes through my closet once a year and changes the direction of the clothes hangars. As she puts cleaned clothes back in the closet, she changes the direction of the hangar. If, at the end of the year, the hangar direction hasn't changed, she knows I haven't worn it (she does the same for her clothes). Whatever I haven't worn gets donated. I do have override if I want but it kind of makes sense.
Why have something if you're not going to use it or it's not functional for how you live?

Yes, she does the laundry. There was a failed experiment early in our relationship where I tried to put her delicates through the laundry. I have not been allowed to do laundry since without explicit directions using her pre-programmed settings. I, on the hand, am responsible for taking care of all yard and house maintenance. I also deal with all house renovation and finances. It's a balance.

I think it’s peer pressure? Once you become very wealthy you tend to associate with wealthy or wealthier people and then expectations build up…
I also find it ridiculous but I’ve caught myself up recently with buying a 500$ (on sale from original 3000$) branded luxury dress because it was uniquely cute so I think I may eventually buy a luxury designer bag for the same reason….

I'll pay for a brand if it's quality and will last a long time. Not for a logo.

Right , and also as long as I get to where I need to be going I don't mind a 5k car either. Just like on a plane I don't need first class we are all leaving and arriving at the same place at the same time

My father used to say that people spend money on designer/luxury brand shit to project the illusion of wealth. Vast majority of people with these products are not wealthy, but they want to look like they are. AKA "keeping up with the Joneses."
I have a Coach bag that I bought on clearance at the outlet for $80. I liked the color (neon yellow-green) and the quality is nice. It is my most expensive purse and probably will be for the rest of my life.

You’d be surprised how many people are wealthy but don’t look or dress it.

I'd focus on quality, ethically sourced fabric, and tailoring. That's about it.
A brand name doesn't mean it'll look good on me.

I'm the same, I just think they're tacky and overpriced. They're not even that expensive really. Like a car worth $5k is considered c****, so why is it impressive that someone can spend $500 on a tshirt? You can literally make that in a week on minimum wage

Designers are designed to make the poor look rich

It's not JUST you but it definitely ain't me. If I get famous I will be draped, decked, damn near ensconced in designer. If I like the look and feel of course. But that's true at my current price point. I'm curious to see what expensive brands hit the mark.

I dont mind the price. Its just that its usually kind of shit stuff. I want a couch. Im looking and there are designer couches for 10-15 grand. And they are shit. I had to hunt for a small store in Maine that still does 8 way hand tied sofas. I dont even mind the 5-10 grand price tag because those will last until my grand children have babies.

I feel like they just don't care, they buy whatever they want. Whether it's c**** or expensive, they don't even look at the price.

Not just you. I feel the same way about clothing as I do about massive & expensive homes. I just can't see myself spending money on that, even if I had more money than I knew what to do with. I'm not crazy frugal, just some things are not worth it. Designer clothing in particular. There are certain pieces I suppose that I'd consider a "work of art" and worth paying for, but I don't have the kind of life I could wear those clothes to LOL.

I only buy designer things that I’d buy even if wasn’t made by a designer. I hate things with prominent logos on them.

Some people don't care. They have the money, they just want someone to do it for them.
I agree with you though.

Hermès bags are made in France, by very skilled leather workers. This company is basically keeping that whole industry in France alive. The owner also refused a donation by Epstein.
I'd consider buying one of their bags, if I was super rich.
All the rest of the designer stuff: nope. It used to be better quality, but that's not even true anymore. It's made in the same factories in China as the c**** stuff.

Ok-Nature-5440Apr 2, 2026
You are delusional. The c*** is made in china, finished in France. HERMES IS ONE OF THE WORST. You literally can’t go into a boutique, lay down 75k, and buy a basic Birken. You have to “ develop a relationship with the Brand “.
This is all marketing, perceived value. It’s all over the media right now, educate yourself. Hermes is one of the worst offenders.
Years ago, Hermes refused to open their store for Oprah Winfrey. I don’t even know what these “ shopgirls “ think they are pulling over on the public.
Name me 4 luxury brands right now that you know truly wealthy people shop at. Hint, it isn’t Gucci( bankrupt) LV, Hermes.

Go with what looks good on you. That’s so much more important than how much it cost or who designed it.
We went to a wedding where the groom’s mother was wearing some designer’s original. It was really tacky: matte black with odd pieces hanging down at different lengths—very unbecoming and unattractive.

A big percentage of these are basically just showing off how much money they're spending (usually people who are rich but not mega-rich). Like, if a new designer sold exactly the same stuff for 10x the price, this demographic would flock to 'em because the whole *point* is to say "I'm wearing stuff that cost a ton."
A smaller percentage, and mostly containing the mega-rich (i.e., rich enough that they don't need their clothes to should "I paid an enormous amount of money just for a shirt") *are* still wearing stuff that's crazy-expensive, but remember that's "crazy-expensive" in normal people terms, and they're gettin' stuff they like and not really thinking about the price.
The way it was explained to me is this: Imagine regular pants cost a penny. Would you be willing to pay $.25 for a pair of pants that was more comfortable, or that you liked the look of? Probably. And if the difference in cost is basically nothing, the "better" clothes don't need to be a *lot* better to be worth the extra cost, when you're rich enough that the difference between $10 and $2,000 is basically nothing to you.
Like, how much comfier does a pair of pants have to be for you to be willing to pay an extra one cent for it? Probably not very.

I think it might be a gradual glide, where you end up not really thinking about it, because it won't matter for your wealth anyway.
That assumes multi-millionaire. Not someone with a handful of millions, which you can use up surprisingly fast if you aren't careful.
