It was added to Netflix recently and I've been considering watching it. I watched the first seasons some years ago but never finished it. Wouldn't say I'm a big fan of the procedurals but i did watch shows like Castle, Bones and had fun with them back in the day. Is the Mentalist worth watching all the way through though ? I remember I watched the first two seasons and wasn't particularly impressed with it. It seemed to me that it was way too focused on the cases and not on the central couple.
It is absolutely worth watching. I say this as someone who has just finished another rewatch of the show :)

It’s competence p***. Basically if you like Numbers, Will Trent, or House then you’d like this. Also helps that Simon Baker and Robbin Tunney are great together

It's a good show except after Red John is dealt with. They tried another season and I found it wasn't the same show, at least for me.

No wonder they lasted just one more season after they killed the big bad

I hear you but I liked it because it gave a different spin to a cast of interesting characters outside the shadow of a serial killer hunt.

Yeah the FBI weirdness wasn’t needed

One of my all time favorite shows.
Procedural cop case show with the overarching story which is Red John.
Also, Thomas Jane is a very likeable character as a viewer.
Also, the music is very soothing and relaxing.
Highly recommend.

In the middle of a binge rewatch first time since it was first on. It’s still fun. Some episodes are a bit Murder She Wrote but then there are moments of WTF and just great acting. Those are rare though.

Too focused on the cases? That’s what I watch a procedural for. I enjoyed it.

I remember when I watched Castle it was also focused a lot on the cases but at the same time it was interesting to watch the dynamic between the main couple (at least until they got together). With the Mentalist at least in the seasons I've seen I hadn't seen the same level of chemistry.

Keep watching, then. There's definitely "couple" development. I actually didn't care for it, it felt artificial.

I liked it, but you've already seen two seasons. It's apparently not for you.

OP had only seen 46 episodes. They've barely given the characters a chance to develop.

If OP didn't like the first two seasons and also doesn't even like procedurals, then its probably not for them.

I do like procedurals, they're just not my favorite kind of shows. But I can watch them if I'm in the mood for it.

I loved Psych and treated it as a more standard cop procedural of that gimmick. It was fun but definitely struggled on some later seasons as they just needed to keep the big bad juuuuuuust out of reach.

The main character is great. For that performance alone, the whole series was enjoyable.

Loved it but was already a huge Simon Baker fan so I may have been biased.

I started watching it and am just about to finish season one. It's a typical show with a genius investigator who comes in and sees everything that no one else can see and he solves the crime in cool ways. It's fun, but like how a bag of potato chips are fun.

Cool at the time. It is more of a background show for me now.

It’s a nice monster of the week show with a main plot that is not being too intrusive. The main plot kinda fizzled out at the end tho.

Worth. Just know that the reveal of the big bad is disappointing

Which was probably because they had zero clue who it should have been from the start and ran out of time.

I don’t think it was at all. Especially now knowing when in the show they’re first shown….

It's a really fun show, the main character is really unique and the way he solves the cases is very entertaining because it's just him pushing people's buttons and outsmarting them in different ways. In the realm of good procedurals it's up there and certainly much much better than what we get now.

It's really good until the end of season 6, becomes weaker after that.
Really gives you a "are they being watched" feeling, you start mistrusting every character from a certain point on.

Seems like not the show for you. It's really good, but the romantic plots are meh.

At least watch episodes with Malcolm McDowell. Those are the best. Shame his character wasn't present more.

When Simon Baker was the token British actor that was given the big push. I never watched the show but he had the machine behind him during that run. I get the sense he didn't have anything big after it because I don't remember seeing him get the same push after the show ended.

They've already watched several episodes and cannot determine how to move forward in their life!
