Ok... I wanted to watch a movie with a crazy plot twist… so I looked up a list of the best plot twist movies.
But...
You know what's coming...
Is it still a plot twist if you know there will be one ?
And, well,... don't I just spoil the movie for myself by looking for a twist ?
I mean... you know...I’m not sure even the best twist can compensate for the damage already done by expecting a twist... \^\^
I mean, the plot twist might be so good that it still isn’t the one you are predicting…but you’re also kind of asking how spoiled a movie is if you spoil it before watching.

I watched Sixth Sense fully knowing what the plot twist was many many years after it came out, but it was still so well done it didn't detract from my experience.

We rewatched a few weeks after watching it. For us, the second time was incredibly interesting to watch to see how they got us the first time. Very well made movie.

I guessed it watching it, but I knew there was a twist to look for
I think if I hadn't I'd have been caught off guard

I first watched sixth sense when I was 6, I was taping it on my vcr tv. Safe to say I screwed up that recording. The scene with the sick girl made slap the power button so fast. Never turned it back on after.

A good plot twist is still good even if you know it's coming.
Maybe pure shock value is diminished, but I don't think enjoyment is.

A good plot twist will change the way you watch a movie on subsequent rewatches. If it doesn't, then I feel like it's a twist for twist's sake.

Hard disagree. I count any hint of a twist as a spoiler. While the viewer might not know what will twist or when, expecting a twist alters the experience of the movie. You can’t trust any plot point or character until the twist is revealed. With that, I’m just waiting for the shoe to drop. Bums me out.

It's not that hard. Until a few years back I was watching 70-90 movies a year in the cinema thanks to an unlimited cinema pass. I avoided trailers (even in the cinema that's not hard, screenings at my local always started 25 minutes after the advertised start time), social media discussion etc until I'd actually watched the movie.
It was transformative. I of course watched some absolute dross, but more than made up for by moments like going into 'Us' and not having the slightest clue what was about to happen. The driveway scene can't really be called a spoiler (it's in the trailer), but not knowing it was coming at all? Amazing, it's very, very difficult to find moments like that and it was absolutely worth the effort.
I go to the cinema rarely now, but I'm actively doing similar with Disclosure Day and The End of Oak Street (I know they exist and who made/directed them, so I made a decision to avoid everything about them).

I get this. If there’s a twist don’t let me know it. Because I’ll probably predict it and it’s going to ruin the experience at least somewhat.

The surprise is diminished, which is a big part of the point of a plot twist. The surprise of the plot going in a completely different direction is just not there if you were expecting it to do exactly that, even if you couldn't predict the specific direction.

That’s why I say a good twist is still good.
Even if you don’t know a twist is coming, a bad plot twist is recognizable from a mile away, and for me, ruins it so much more because you know exactly how it’s gonna go down, so it makes the main characters feel stupid for not seeing the betrayal coming.
Even if you know a twist is coming, if it’s good, that means the narrative throws curveballs and red herrings. It can still be a shock. There is still an “oh no!” moment.

I keep a long list of movies to watch, so I often hear about a movie, add it to the list, but don’t actually watch it for a few years. So ideally I’d get a rec from that thread, put it on the list, but forget where the rec came from by the time I actually watch it.

My friend wanted me to watch a movie she’d recently seen and was just in love with… she kept saying stuff like “omg, you’ll never see the end coming, I was so blown away!” So I watch it and OF COURSE I see the end coming a million miles away. She couldn’t understand why I thought the movie was meh. 🙄

It’s the Schrödinger’s Cat of cinema. By looking for a twist movie, you’ve simultaneously found what you wanted and destroyed the very thing that makes it work. The best way to watch a twist movie is to ask a friend for a 'good thriller' and hope they don't say a word about the ending

Sometimes if you're looking for one it's not too hard to figure it out, I've seen people who think they're very smart because they figured out >!Usual Suspects!< whenever it's inevitably brought up in one of these lists. Well yeah if you saw it cold you wouldn't have but actively looking for a twist doesn't exactly make you Sherlock.

Thats true, but i do think it diminishes the plot point to a certain extent. Most movies do not have dramatic, story altering plot twists. So when you're watching a movie, you're taking the story as straightforward as possible, not second guessing, you think what the story presents you initially is fact. Plot twists work partially because they capitalize on how movies usually go, its a surprise that works because it is upending how a particular story usually goes. But if you already know theres a twist, you're less likely to take what the story presents to you as fact, you're less likely to buy into particular plot points because you know from jump the filmmaker is withholding something from you. You're more likely to notice things like "they keep mentioning this one character, but we haven't been shown what they *look like* yet", etc.

Yeah, unless the movie has multiple plot twist.
*The Game (1997)* was pretty fun in that way, because it kept you second-guessing everything all the time.
3
space-cyborgMar 29, 2026
+2
Agree. The thing about The Game is that you already know there are exactly two possibilities. You go back and forth on them in your mind through the whole movie, and at the end, it’s 50/50 what’s gonna happen.
But for most plot twist movies, knowing there is a twist absolutely spoils the joy of the movie. For me, I love that feeling of “omg I had no idea and it was there all along”, like in the Prestige or Sixth Sense. Knowing there is a twist, you’ll look for it, and it will quickly become obvious.
And for other movies with simpler twists (No Way Out, LA Confidential, Shutter Island), once you know there is a twist, you already know what it is. That’s the definition of spoiled.
2
Dude_be_trippinMar 29, 2026

I'm okay with knowing whether there is a plot twistor not, and whether it's crazy or not. It's the journey that gets me there that's fun also. Granted, it is also fun going into a movie blind, or even a show. If I know there is a plot twist then I don't want to know anything about the movie.
This is a show, but I went into Wayward Pines without knowing anything at all, and not watching any reviews along the way. I loved that show for that. So eventhough I don't mind knowing there is a plot twist, it is a better experience not knowing anything at all.

I was the same for the sixth sense. Knew there was a plot twist, had seen the trailer with the kid who sees dead people, worked it out in the first 10 minutes.
From Dusk til Dawn however, I had no idea there was any kind of twist and it blew me the f*** away

I always don’t understand why knowing there’s a plot twist will ruin viewing experience. Especially there are genres that plot twists are a must.
Let’s take mystery for example, specifically murder mysteries and crime fiction. There are definitely plot twistssss (plural). A mystery without any plot twist will be a boring story. So, on the contrary, the fun is actually a test of your wit. Whether you will fall into the trap of the writer, getting fooled by them big time. 😂

I think the best plot twist movies are movies where when you first watch them you didn't know the plot twist existed. Like when I first watched Sixth Sense when I was a child I knew it was a big movie, but I wasn't on the internet at 9 or 10 years old so I had no clue there was a twist involved. So when I saw the twist it instantly blew my mind and M Night instantly became one of my favorite directors and writers and I was obsessed with his movies until he tarted making some real shit movies. Momento is another one that was holy shit to me.
Although as I've gotten older I can pick out a twist very early. The twist in Knives Out was very apparent literally mid way through the movie. Same thing with recently the movie Send Help. Although with both of those movies I still enjoyed them.

Yeah, the best plot twists are when you don't know when they're coming.
If you can sense it's going to happen or know in advance then you're just waiting to acknowledge the obvious and it takes the magic/surprise away.

If it's a well written movie, it shouldn't matter much, imo. Like if you figure out the twist, it just means the story is logically consistent.

All movies have plot twists. What many don't have is a big reveal at the end.
1

Full disagree. A plot twist is usually one or two minutes long, what makes it worth it and awesome is the stuff that comes before and after it, so nothing is really spoiled. If you’re placing the entire value of a movie on the plot twist (or the ending for that matter), then just watch short form videos.

There’s definitely a twist in Blazing Saddles although it doesn't really have much to do with the plot. The OP should check that one out if he hasn't seen it.

JulesetMar 29, 2026

The best plot twists are a logical conclusion of the narrative, so yes.
If a story about ghosts has got to have good plot twist, then the best, the logical plot twist is that a main living character is a ghost.
The fact that I can think of three different films with that set-up and twist, all of them excellent in their own way, whether gay drama or Victorian horror film or The Sixth Sense, means that any other twist would have been a worse narrative choice and that it is the easiest twist to guess.
That being said, a film is not its twist. An awful film with a great twist is still an awful film. And a film you never watch because you find period horror films terrible or don't want to watch Bruce Willis playing a therapist to some kid, is a film whose twist remains unspoiled because it remains unseen. "It has a unbelievable twist" is great word of mouth.

Yeah I HATE these types of posts. "Which character death is the saddest?" Is another one. These types of posts are just spoiler city, I don't understand the point in participating in them but listnookors love them for some reason. I think they like to post a single comment and then leave. Or they ctrl F for the move they were thinking of and go "yeah." Such braindead behavior. People who want real discussions can't, because then they just spoil movies for themselves.

I asked Chat GPT to give me a list of 50 highly rated movies, but 50% of them should have a big narrative twist, then i asked it to randomise them.
That way, you get a good movie regardless, but never 100% know if there's a twist coming (unless you already know there is, ofc)
