21
ux3l 2 days ago +105
And then they somehow expect, *if* Iranians manage to overthrow the government, the next will be less hostile towards USA / Israel.
105
Halbaras 2 days ago +86
And last time the Iranians had democracy, they voted in a nationalist government that was considered unacceptable to the profits of western oil companies. This directly led to the 1951 coup and Shah's human rights abuses, and indirectly led to the 1979 Islamic revolution and human rights abuses of the ayatollahs. Iran competing with Saudi Arabia and Turkey as the regional power, desiring a strong independent military, feeling more aligned with other Shia-majority populations in the middle east, and having strongly nationalist politics isn't going to magically go away even if the regime was overthrown. The IRGC is also something resembling a state-backed mafia which runs a double-digit proportion of the current economy. A realistic democratic transition would involve a protracted and messy dissolution of the IRGC that would involve partial dismantlement, privatisation and legitimisation. But following an invasion the US would probably repeat all the catastrophic mistakes of de-Ba'athication in Iraq. A free and democratic Iran would probably be more more reminiscent of Turkey than the Israeli-flag waving portions of the disapora would like to admit. Their liberal politics represent an economically powerful minority who'd be competing for influence with a powerful Shia bloc of religious conservatives, secular nationalists who aren't particularly pro-western, minority parties for groups like the Kurds and Balochs, and probably also a resurgence of the actual leftism that was widespread before the revolution. It would be a complex country with complex politics, and not Israel 2 in terms of western interests. The Gulf States and Saudi Arabia might paradoxically feel even more threatened by a free Iran with democratically legitimate leaders, a military that remained powerful, and a functional, unsanctioned economy.
86
shadedmagus 1 day ago +2
Important Detail conveniently left out of this screed: Iran went the way it did because the US deposed the government the Persians elected democratically and reinstalled the Shah before the election you're talking about. When they overthrew the Shah again, the fundies led the way. So the US and Israel shot themselves in the foot and blame Iran instead of themselves.
2
FigureMost1687 2 days ago
Iran would turn into Iraq2.0 within couple of years invasion , sectarian violence and more autonomous Kurdish and Balo areas , constant fighting to gain more power from any sides of political and nations would turn Iran into hell for civilians . every side knows whoever controls their area or specifically oil rich areas would become powerful . u are right about Iran would be powerful in any condition though and noone in that area would want that Israel is number 1 and Saudis number 2 ...

What is the f****** problem with these movie villains? This is the core fundamental problem with the right wing; they think if they can point out that someone else is a bad guy then they can be as much of a bad guy as they want to be in response and that somehow they're excused from immorality. It doesn't work like that in real life, though. There can be 2 bad guys in a fight. And they prove this every time they pick one.
268
broguequery 1 day ago +96
Well it's pretty easily explained by how Republicans view the world. People are either good or bad, not actions. So if you are a "good person", it doesn't really matter what you do... you will always be a good person. And vice versa.

Those same people who want to force the 2nd coming of Christ seem to ignore that it doesn't end well for them. *Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.*

So much of the diaspora out here still supporting Trump like he ever gave a damn about Iranians in Iran. Trump doesn’t even care about Americans who aren’t on his side, let alone anyone not American. They’re rooting for the US to continue destroying the country they left — is there any greater betrayal? Human rights concerns in Iran have taken such a backseat to the much greater challenges the Iranians living there must now face. And for what? Gas and anything associated has gone up for everyone, the regime is not only still in power but have been empowered, loss of life and resources on both sides, etc etc. But Pahlavi will still herd the sheep in an opportunistic attempt at returning to his American-puppeted throne. Horrible.

Tell me, which country has committed the most murders of journalists? Without them, it's hard to tell what's really happening.

Hamas paramilitaries wearing press jackets are jot “journalists.” Noa argamani was rescued from a “journalist’s” house where she was held hostage and made to work in the house like a slave. Read books. They’re good for you.

Of course, they were all Hamas. Sorry but I've heard enough of Knesset members speeches calling for killing all civilians, including children to not take that excuse seriously anymore. And interviews with common Israelis calling for the same. Or videos from israeli settlers. Do you want me to just ignore all of that?

Targeting people wearing a press jacket pretty much means you are committing war crimes. If they ARE part of a terror organization, give us prove they are and maybe not use a rocket that also kills everyone else near them! So far, I can’t remember any actual and definitive proof for any of the journalists, press members and so on that shows those people were actually Hamas members/terrorists. At best we get unintelligible documents that either proof nothing (like lists of people with no further context), unreadable pictures with horrible resolution, or most of the time nothing at all (apart of claims of course). The IDF has almost certainly targeted press members militarily and even in other ways, at least according to pretty much every independent and international press organization, the EU, the UN, and so on…

Wait, the fake country started in the 40's by stealing land from Palestinians is going to bomb a country thousands of years old back to darkness and stone? Have we had enough of their war mongering yet?

During the "age of darkness" Iran was one of the few places with street lamps, fueled by oil.

We will **all** be in darkness. World war 3 is inching closer by the hour, or maybe it's called Armageddon.

Well, it’s the end of the week so I’m afraid that won’t be happening until Monday morning after markets open. Until then, I need to call some billionaires to let them know Donald will be announcing another two week ceasefire at 4:30 pm before markets close so they have enough time to buy low and sell high tomorrow. Your pensions and retirements are being siphoned btw. The money doesn’t come from nowhere.

It takes a truly herculean effort to make Iran look like the good guys in a war... but damn are they trying.

Katz is well known in Israel as a fairly hardline member of Netanyahu’s cabinet. They call him the bulldozer.

I've only spoken to two Iranian expats but they surprised many people by saying Yes. They welcome the pain because they hope that it will lead to regime change. I have my doubts about that and about them feeling as strongly if they still lived in Iran though.

It's "funny" that it's the three countries that are the three biggest representatives of their respective abrahamic religion being at war. I know it's not a religious war but it's notable. They have the same imaginary friend.

Surely the rest of the Muslim world is getting the message that all Israel's current fascist government wants is the death of everyone who opposes their expansionist policy. That's a very dangerous position for all the decent moderate Israelis. Iraq just has their petrodollars stolen by the Trump regime. That's a hell of a way to make adversaries find common ground. An Iraq, Iran, Egypt and Syria allegiance to remove their common foe isn't beyond the realm of possibility.

Professional-Ad3874 1 day ago +5
What? Thats not nearly the whole Muslim world, and Egypt would not join that anyway. But all this is nothing new. It may seem that way to you but in the Middle East this is just a day ending in Y.

Everyone so outraged to hear an Israeli say this when Iranian leaders said just this type of thing about Israel for decades. Yes, it’s bad to say this stuff. Yes, Katz is bad. But it’s weird how the outrage only shows up when it’s Israel being bad.
