Is it just me or is Pizzaballa the type of name you come up with if you need a Rowling style offensive Italian name?

Thankfully Israeli police chief Uzi Kibbutz Shalom was able to reach an accommodation with Pizzaballa following the intervention of the American consul general, Cowboy Hotdog.

Pizzaballa is the kind of name I'd call my priest in WoW when I was 8. It may be the best Italian name of all time.
793
savois-faire Mar 30, 2026 +179
There's an American screenwriter called Nick Pizzalotto. I couldn't believe that was a real name the first time I saw it.

Ayyy Nicky P, he won the pizza l******! Now he can buy a lotto pies. 🤌 That's up there with being named Shirley for the thick skin elementary school Olympics.

It could also be a good NBA fantasy team name.

I remember last year during the Pope elections that he was in the running. Still can’t imagine a Pope Pizza
144
Objectively_bad_idea Mar 30, 2026 +92
It's great that he didn't get made Pope, because he'd have had to take a new name. So we'd have lost out on occasional headlines about Pizzaballa.
92
Ultraplo Mar 30, 2026 +76
Just to be pedantic, he technically wouldn’t *have* to. The cardinal deacon would ask him by what name he shall be called, at which point he could just say Pizzaballa. He probably wouldn’t, but *Supreme Pontiff, His Holiness Pizzaballa I* would go hard af.
76
Mustakraken Mar 30, 2026 +23
Yeah, getting elected would have wrapped up the Pope Pizza naming concern. Of course, at that point, it's Papa Calzone, or, for the traditionalists, The Stromboli Papacy.

"His Excellency" The hell was that necessary for
73
u60cf28 Mar 30, 2026 +145
“Excellency” is probably the most common title for heads of state (Presidents) and heads of governments (prime ministers) in republics. The main exception being the US, because Washington specifically rejected the use of such a title, preferring the far more humble “Mr. President”.
145
LaunchTransient Mar 30, 2026 +119
It is, unfortunately, the style of his title as President of Israel. "Excellency" is considered the honorific of address for republican heads of state - similar to "Your majesty" or "Your highness" for monarchies.

The modern Sadducees don't want Christians cramping their style
219
francis2559 Mar 30, 2026 +193
Lil trivia but the Sadducees died out historically, as their approach to religion revolved around a temple and there’s no temple since 70AD. Any Jewish person you meet draws from the tradition of the Pharisees, who grappled with the idea of worshipping without a temple in exile. It’s a good reason not to use Pharisee as an insult or shorthand for “hypocrite.” Plenty of hypocritical Christians even today, and plenty of sincere “Pharisees.” edit: typo fix.

Israel was clearly retaliating for Pope Leo's criticism of the war. American Christians need to figure out that they are simply Netanyahu's "useful idiots."
4685
musashisamurai Mar 30, 2026 +1769
A lot of Christians aren't Catholic, and hate the Pope. The tradcath evangelicals have more in common with those Christians than other Catholics.
1769
CurrentSkill7766 Mar 30, 2026 +1088
The modern American Catholic right wing, a la JD Vance and the Opus Dei folks, often politically align with the evangelical right rather than the Vatican.
1088
Fun_Skirt8220 Mar 30, 2026 +610
And they should be excommunicated, the only real stick.
610
Combat_Proctologist Mar 30, 2026 +160
The tradcaths are pretty close to excommunicating the Pope instead (ok, they're more likely to declare the holy see empty, but this was funnier) for various reasons (often some objection to Vatican II)
160
trisanachandler Mar 30, 2026 +75
Wouldn't be the first time they tried it.
75
Typically_Wong Mar 30, 2026 +22
I mean, they have had multiple popes at the same time. A west and east pope. It's how we got Eastern Orthodoxy.
22
BanalCausality Mar 30, 2026 +54
Are you conflating the Great Schism with the Western Schism?
54
totallynotliamneeson Mar 30, 2026 +22
....but wouldn't that be an outside entity, a religious one at that, influencing our politics? That's what they used to use to fear monger about electing Catholics back in the day.
22
musashisamurai Mar 30, 2026 +62
It is. Since Vatican II, excommunication is now almost exclusively a punishment for people who prevent others from worship or who lead others away from the Church. For this reason, almost everyone excommunicated in reason years are priests who teach something not accepted in doctrine. Minors, anyone unaware of church law or teachings, are not excommunicated. It also includes a few things like attacking the Pope or violating the Eucharist. Personally, based on heresy, violating confession, and leading others out of the church, I think all the creepy priests should be declared excommunicated and kicked out. No trials, no need for any major investigations. Just let it be automatic.

Orthodox, Reformed, Hussite, Anglican are other options
3
Drawemazing Mar 30, 2026 +54
Reformed and Anglican are protestant. Orthodox is in communion with the Catholic Church. I honestly thought hussites didn't exist anymore.
54
Casoscaria Mar 30, 2026 +17
There is a small group of refounded Hussites that's in Czechia. They're spiritual cousins of the other surviving group, the Moravian Church.

While the Orthodox and Catholic Churches are very similar in many respects, they are not in communion with each other at the present moment.
37
FTblaze Mar 30, 2026 +5
Ah, i thought reformed (calvinist) / anglican were considered their own protestant offshoot. Main protestant line being lutherian. Orthodox is not in communion as far google suggests. Could be wrong tho.
5
genericnewlurker Mar 30, 2026 +12
The Anglican Church was it's own Protestant offshoot (King Henry had to get those divorces) but it is a blend of Catholic and Lutheran practices. The Episcopal church (Anglican) is in full communion with the Lutheran church in America
12
Drawemazing Mar 30, 2026 +8
Yea your right about orthodox. I misremembered post Vatican II reconciliation efforts and the recognition of orthodox sacraments as being in communion, but that is a bridge too far.
8
rjfrost18 Mar 30, 2026 +5
My understanding is the Catholic Church has cleared the theological barriers to the Orthodox church being in full communion with the Catholic Church. The Orthodox church would just need to agree to papal supremecy, but otherwise wouldn't have to change any of their teachings or practices.
5
sephiroth70001 Mar 30, 2026 +3
Protestantismincludes numerous denominations such as Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, and Anglicans, etc. There isn't even one branch of Orthodox like eastern and Oriental Orthodox. Was technically one of the first big splits caused by the Trinity hundreds of years before the the great Protestant split.
3
musashisamurai Mar 30, 2026 +3
Just to explain some more. Orthodox is NOT Protestant. Its also NOT in communion with the Catholic Church. Anglicanism, or the Church of England, IS Protestant and IS in communion. The key difference as to why Anglicans are in communion, besides years of diplomacy, was because Henry VIII was upset over a marriage and not actual religious doctrine. Anglican beliefs and practices arent that removed from Roman Catholic ones. Orthodox (Greek, Russian, etc) had religious AND political differences. But for the entirety of medieval and Renaissance times since the Schism, both sides did hold out that they could merge back. Even if thats not likely now, both the Patriarch and the Pope agree on several things and work together as major religious leaders. To get more different, there are also other Catholic Churches. For example, in Lebanon, there is the Maronite Catholic Church which follows the Pope but is not Roman Catholic. I am not hearing much in America condemning the violence towards them by Israel. Finally, there is a Roman Catholic movement of "sed evantis" or "empty seat" (of my Latin is right), who believe the Pope has been empty since Vatican II and Pope John. They believe he was a Free Mason or something, and therefore excommunicated.
3
irishsausage Mar 30, 2026 +5
Where did you get this idea from about Anglicanism? The C of E is in no way in communion with the Catholic Church. There are sweeping disagreements between the two disciplines on the very basics of the faith. Notably to be a protestant you naturally do not adhere to the authority of the Pope and the C of E is outside catholic jurisdiction. There are also massive differences in key theological practices/beliefs regarding the eucharist and also the ordination of women as just two examples, among many more. Utter pish from your self to be honest.
5
musashisamurai Mar 30, 2026 +4
They are not in full communion, no, but it is possible for Anglicans to receive Eucharist from Catholic and vice versa depending on circumstances. Thats far more than any other Catholic-Protestant ties.

For a brief moment I thought there was a denomination I'd never heard of called Hustle, and my first thought was not "that's not correct" but actually "Subtle slam putting that next to Anglican. "
3
sephiroth70001 Mar 30, 2026 +3
Modern day you have oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, Protestantism, Restorationism, Assyrian church if the east, Ecumenism, etc.
3
failbotron Mar 30, 2026 +40
Yup, a lot of them hate the liberal popes and want hardline conservative "return to true tradition" leadership in the church (homophobia, misogyny, ethno religious purity, blah blah blah)
40
Combat_Proctologist Mar 30, 2026 +38
Say what you will about the catholics, but they haven't been an ethno religion since the literal apostle Paul won that argument
38
failbotron Mar 30, 2026 +10
As a whole maybe not, but there are plenty of ethnoreligious groups within the church. Each major "catholic" country has them. Hispanic, Polish, and Italian Catholic groups come to mind.

This. My extended family is Catholic and they didn't hesitate to choose MAGA over the Vatican.

Following the pope is like THE defining feature of being a Catholic and what sets Catholics apart from other Christians. I'm not so sure they can call themselves Catholic.

MxDoctorReal Mar 30, 2026 +19
Since Vatican 2 Catholics have been deciding they won’t follow the pope, but still consider themselves Catholic.

I went to Catholic school in 1st through 8th grade, and I think we got a visit from Opus Dei people in 7th or 8th grade. I just remember feeling that something was incredibly *off* with those folks. Might have been what started me down the path of not being Catholic anymore
11

I've heard some devout Catholics deny the previous pope was really the pope, and are quite unsure about the current one.

2
Punman_5 Mar 30, 2026 +133
Specifically, most American Christian’s aren’t Catholic. In fact, the founders of the US often heavily distrusted Catholics and considered them second class. JFK and Joe Biden were the only two Catholic presidents in US history too.
133
Skellos Mar 30, 2026 +72
And there was a smear campaign that JFK would be the Pope's puppet.
72
DarthBrooks69420 Mar 30, 2026 +46
If you went back to the 60s and told people that in 60 years the entire (or nearly the entire) court would be catholic and it was primarily Protestant presidents that put them there, they would lose their shit.
46
Bird_Hot Mar 30, 2026 +13
America hates Catholics to the extent they backed the antiCatholic Mexican government during the Cristero War in the 1920s that saw clergy and even women and children murdered by thr government. Also the Klan has historically been anti Catholic as well.
13
fantaribo Mar 30, 2026 +24
50% of christians worldwide are catholics. 33% of USA's christians are catholics. That's not negligeable.

2
Kosher_Pork_12 Mar 30, 2026 +8
My b if it sounded like an accusation, wasn't meant to be.  That being said American evangelicals are fairly despised within the Catholic community. I'm by no means the most devout nor will I ever be preachy, but their idea of making up a bunch of c*** (the rapture, sola scriptura, justification by faith alone, purity culture, calling various biblical lessons "woke" and "outdated" when they're the seminal basis of the entire religion) makes us wonder where they got the idea that they have a high horse to be on.
8
Lieffe Mar 30, 2026 +13
A lot, yes, but Catholics make up nearly half of the world's Christians.
13

Doesn’t change the fact that OP is right. It was the Catholic Church patriarch of Jerusalem (Pizzaballa!) who was kept from holding a service.
4
PhantasosX Mar 30, 2026 +30
A lot of american christians. I doubt the european protestants are hateful as the american ones , that somehow pretends that catholicism isn't even christian or some nonsense like that.
30
Rdhilde18 Mar 30, 2026 +34
Bro Europe fought wars over the differences between Protestants and Catholics??
34
PhantasosX Mar 30, 2026 +23
Yes, yet Europe don't show all the anti-catholic sentiment that the american protestants currently presents. Which shows how baffling is the anti-catholicism is in USA when they barely had any actual conflict with them in history. It really boils down to the fact that early US Christianism comes from puritans and other sects that were kicked out by protestants AND catholics in Europe. Pretty much far-right conservatives even at the time.
23
musashisamurai Mar 30, 2026 +19
You forgot another two crucial factors: thr Church of England and race. Anglicans weren't the only Christians in the colonies, but they were one of the biggest sects, if not the biggest, and Anglicans were opposed to Rome. They were taught a lot about papist plots and conspiracies and with England/GB at war with Catholic nations like Spain or France, these feelings would remain into the United States after independence. A lot of anti-Catholicism thus traces it roots back to England. There's also race. The average English colonist would be Protestant, the average Irish, Italian, Polish, Spanish, Latino/Hispanics immigrants would be Catholic. Guess which groups were historically oppressed in America? Irish and Italians would gain a lot of mainstream acceptance after the world wars when many served in Europe and elsewhere, and also because by then, they had formed large voting blocs in the US. (I've heard that a quarter of the US has some Irish ancestry. Not sure if thats true though). When anti-Irish and anti-Italian discrimination started dwindling, the related anti-Catholicism also had its wind knocked out of it.
19
NYCinPGH Mar 30, 2026 +10
There may have been strong anti-Catholic sentiment among Anglican immigrants hundreds of years ago, but Episcopalians - what Anglicans in the U.S. became after the Revolutionary War - over the past hundred or more years have pretty much been the most progressive mainline Christians in the U.S., and haven’t had, as an institution, strong anti-Catholic sentiment in even longer. The strong anti-Catholic sentiment comes from Baptists and their splinter groups, basically people who both didn’t want some foreigner dictating their religion, be it the pope or the English crown, *and* thought that Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, et al, weren’t h******* fire & brimstone enough. It comes from all the nutjobs in the Great Awakenings in the mid-19th century (to be clear, there were some good things that came out of the Great Awakenings, but all of today’s American Christian evangelical loons and grifters come out of those movements as well).
10

20
musashisamurai Mar 30, 2026 +12
Which again ignores the existence of the many non-Catholic Christian churches and sects. The pope has no influence there and several actively hate them. The OP commented about American Christians. There are more Protestants by far in America than Catholics, and its only relatively recently that Catholics weren't an oppressed group. JFK, the first Catholic president, faced calls that he would be controlled by the pope-and thats tame compared to previous generations. After blacks, the Klan targetted Catholics and Jews as well. Those attitudes didn't dissapear overnight. The new American Catholic movements-tradcaths, Evangelical Catholics, etc-are very much more in line with American Christians than with "traditional" Catholic groups or the Catholic Church.
12
deadsoulinside Mar 30, 2026 +86
Half the problem is the American Christians are thinking they are playing Israel for idiots to help them usher in the end times. Meanwhile it's just them getting played.
86
BeanstheRogue Mar 30, 2026 +37
\*evangelicals and nondemoninationals. No mainline branch of the church, nor the catholic church, believes in the rapture/end times happening because you do a konami code in the holy land.

notmyworkaccount5 Mar 30, 2026 +207
It's getting to the point where I feel like Israel has objectively done more damage to our country than our supposed "enemies" in the middle east. Their lobbying groups have such a hold on both political parties, AIPAC bribes our politicians to send them billions of our tax dollars to bomb children and invade their neighbors.

I think that realization hit me last month lol
6
Zak_Rahman Mar 30, 2026 +32
Look up Perdue and the Sacklers. A significant amount of Israeli infrastructure is straight up built on the blood and suffering of American citizens. Not to mention the sabotage of education in the states and also the state of healthcare.
32
notmyworkaccount5 Mar 30, 2026 +16
I know how much damage the sacklers have done to the country but have been unaware of the Israeli connection. If I remember correctly the epstein files dumps also pointed to him having ties to Mossad?
16
CMxFuZioNz Mar 30, 2026 +50
Also, your "enemies" in the middle east largely do damage because of the US interference and destabilisation.
50
fishblurb Mar 30, 2026 +5
billions? the politicians are cheaper than that. they only spent millions lol. some sell out for 1mil, 5 mil, 500k.

I think you misread that, the billions is what I'm saying our politicians are sending to Israel.

5
calmdownmyguy Mar 30, 2026 +10
After that maybe they can figure out they are useful idiots for the gop and the oligarchy.
10
DinkleDonkerAAA Mar 30, 2026 +7
They're not his useful idiots this is EXACTLY what they want. There's a belief in some evangelical branches that they both need to control the "seven mountains" of American society and that Armageddon won't happen until the chosen people control the holy land So many Americans support Israel because theres a literal doomsday cult that's been slowly taking over the government, the corporate sector, and the media that believes supporting Israel will end the world and have everyone they don't like suffer in hell. The followers of these beliefs are very vocal about it they don't even try to hide. And yet all that conspiracy theorists want to talk about is made up shit about the protocols of the elders of zion
7
hotsexychungus Mar 30, 2026 +7
American evangelicals cannot figure this out, because they are a cult and thus completely impervious to logic and reason. They truly believe that Israel is necessary for the end of the world or some other batcrazy nonsense. They need to be completely ostracized from politics. How would you do that? I don't know.
7
dementorpoop Mar 30, 2026 +17

Muslims have way more access than Jews on temple mount. Jews go up only escorted by police and during certain times.
5
haider23 Mar 30, 2026 +7
Silly and misleading comment. The Chief Rabbinate prohibits Jews to go there. This has been the status quo, all Israelis know this.
7
dongasaurus Mar 30, 2026 +9
Yes, the status quo is that Jews aren’t allowed up there and the reason is to prevent conflict.
9
xdvesper Mar 30, 2026 +4
When the Muslims attacked and captured Jerusalem from 1948 to 1967 they entirely banned Jews from visiting their holiest site, the Western Wall. In stark contrast, when Israel took back control of Jerusalem after a defensive war (in 1967 Jordan attacked Israel but lost ground in the counter attack) they allowed Al Aqsa to remain under the control of the Jordanian based Islamic Waqaf. Muslims continued to have access to the site largely uninterrupted for decades since then except during exceptional circumstances like active conflicts where missiles are being fired into Israel.

3
ignore_me_im_high Mar 30, 2026 +2
Your perspective is a little inaccurate because you don't understand the motivations of the American Christians. They hate Catholics for one thing. More than that though, the American Christians believe in the rapture. Both they and the Israeli Zionists think that what they are doing (both in Gaza/the West Bank and the middle east in general) will bring about the end of times. But the Evangelicals and Zionists both believe they are God's chosen people and the other is going to die when the Messiah shows up. The only reason they are working together is because the conditions needed to bring about the Messiah are the same in both belief structures, however the outcome is very different, depending on what religion/cult you follow. So they aren't being manipulated, they want Israel to do this, on their behalf. The fact they are bullying some Catholics is of no consequence to them.

How does that apply to a religion that's been around 2000 years and a country that's been around over 75+ years? Do you think that Christians first came to Israel this week?

I don't know if that's historically true or like, biblically true, but even if it's historical fact I'm guessing that the old old old old old old old guard that were involved are mostly dead by now. So we can probably let that one slide.

I’m sorry, I know this is serious and all, but can we talk about how the Latin Patriarch’s name is Pizzaballa?

He was in the final rounds of consideration for Pope. we could have had Pope Pizzaballa

Yeah We could've had Pope Stromboli
149
u60cf28 Mar 30, 2026 +48
True, they usually take the name of a previous pope or a saint. So clearly we need Pizzaballa to be sainted after he passes away so a future pope can become Pope Pizzaballa.

MoreGaghPlease Mar 30, 2026 +17
Pope Linguini Calzone III
17
StarblindMark89 Mar 30, 2026 +11
True, but sometimes people do refer to Popes by their last name too, even though it's not technically correct, at least here in Italy. We often heard about "Pope Beroglio", "Pope Ratzinger" and the previous one, which I won't even attempt to spell.

It’s almost like an area that is full of holy sites that are important to so many world religions shouldn’t be controlled by a religious-ethno state or something.

Muslims still received no such allowance. Instead they were beaten and had stun grenades thrown at them. That is a crazy story to read of all things on CNN. They even broke the wrists of journalists… Also the West Bank video was so scary too where the soldiers were blowing kisses at the female journalist as they starting unloading rounds into a gathering crowd.

Unfortunate that Arab nations can’t lead the same outrage over Israel’s closure of Masjid Al-Aqsa. It’s been closed for over a month, but all the Arab states are client states of Israel.

The Arab nations leaders have been long bought off by now and the ones who didn't play ball aka Gaddafi, Saddam and Assad got killed or removed. Jordan's king is half-English himself and he and his children basically grew up and studied in Europe and the US.

The western wall is also closed. Israel has closed religious sites and has disallowed gatherings full stop, because there aren’t bomb shelters in the old city.
63
Playful-Profile6489 Mar 30, 2026 +78
Limited groups were allowed to pray at the Western Wall while all access was denied to the Holy Sepulchre and Al-Aqsa Mosque
78
gquax Mar 30, 2026 +23
Poor Israel shouldn't have started a war then
23
macsharoniandcheese Mar 30, 2026 +6
So which is it? It’s Israel’s fault so they should protect their citizens? Or it’s Israel’s fault so they should let worshippers in Jerusalem die?
6
DGASAP Mar 30, 2026 +18
Yeah, that's whats happens when a government fights aggressive wars and commits genocide on a regular basis. Their own people also suffer from the monsters that are in charge
18
macsharoniandcheese Mar 30, 2026 -1
Okay sure fine whatever, what does that have to do with these allegations that Israel is specifically targeting certain groups inside Israel? The claim here is “look at Israel. It letting Christian’s and Muslims pray” which is claimed to attempt to paint an image that Israel is targeting non Jews. That’s not true. The end.
-1
DGASAP Mar 30, 2026 -8
If Israel keeps expanding it's boarders and killing people and committing genocide within those new illegal boarders, it is targeting other groups within Israel. Regardless of this situation
-8
theincrediblebou Mar 30, 2026 +12
They do, it’s just meaningless to Israel.
12
Beardmanta Mar 30, 2026 +14
The Western wall is closed to the public as well. There's a war going on and there's no bomb shelters in the old cities.
14
MoreGaghPlease Mar 30, 2026 +6
All the Jewish, Christian and Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem have been closed to worshippers since the start of the war, not under specific bans but a general prohibition on group gatherings. An Iranian ballistic missile landed in the Old City, 400m from the Al-Aqsa platform walls, only about a week ago. Access to Al-Aqsa mosque is generally controlled by the Waqf, the trustees of which are appointed by the King of Jordan.

super__stealth Mar 30, 2026 +31
I don't quite understand what the fuss is about this. All religious gatherings are currently banned in the Old City (including Jewish gatherings over Passover this week), due to risk of bombing. I'm glad that there was an exception made here for the Church leadership, and I wish it would have happened sooner, but I don't see why this is painted as religious persecution of some kind.

Not to go full conspiracy theory mode. But if this were a novel/film I feel like, Israel staging an attack on the Catholics while they were there and blaming it on Iran or another group as a way to get them motivated to join their war wouldn’t be fully out of the question. Seeing how cartoonishly evil these mfers have been, I can’t rule that out as a possibility, but maybe I’m wiling.

Long standing tradition of jerusalem, harass the "other" then call on actually capable people to solve their problem they've manifested. Maybe that entire area needs to go the way of Atlantis.
