For anyone who doesn't read beyond the headline... They were performing a peaceful sit-in after local settlers erected barbwire to stop them from being able to go to school. The IDF then showed up and tear-gassed *the children and locals*, rather than the settlers blocking their access.

Not settlers, Israeli terrorists

Settlers have basically always been terrorists. They are sent out into already lived in land so that an army can "defend" them when people already living there fight back against invaders stealing their land.

That is correct.

They are willing to attack innocent children, men, women, and families over land and homes that aren't even their own. Then they want to paint themself as victims. They are terrorist who do terroristic actions.

The whole "settler" terminology is propaganda at its finest. Settlers weren't colonizers...no no nooo. Settlers are building their homes in "unsettled" land where no man has ever step foot! But...they some how happen upon fully built homes and some strange creatures that look like them and sometimes even speak their language...and yet they are like the wind. You hear it, but you cannot make out its words when its presence is clearly felt. Cognitive dissonance isn't even a strong enough phrase at this juncture.

Settler made it sound like what people in US with European ancestry had been doing for the past hundred or so years, so it makes it related to the US voters. It sounded noble to them, like opening up land to civilization as oppose to native savagery.

So also genocide.

sasha_the_impaler 5 days ago +40
Yeah but we were raised to call them "settlers" for the same reason - it whitewashed history. They're colonizers. English colonizers colonized America. It doesn't sound so peaceful that way.

28
Vaperius 5 days ago +18
> i use settler as a bad thing. Unfortunately it has very sanitized and ambiguous connotations. There's several more accurate words to describe Israeli "Settlers". Terrorist is certainly applicable in some cases, bandit is applicable in some cases, looters and robbers can also apply. Indeed, its a case by case basis what Israeli "settlers" are but under international law, there's one clear fact about all of them: they are criminals, acting under the nominal auspice of Israel's protection to commit many different kinds of crimes against humanity at the behest of a state government with the express intent of gradually driving out a specific ethnic population from a given geographical region i.e to facilitate a genocide through displacement of the rightful landowners and inhabitants of the land they are stealing.

Untamed frontier territory? I think you mean already inhabited land. Settlers take over already inhabited land. Terms like untamed are used by settlers to justify their takeover.

What? They're settlers, they want to settle in the land by displacing Palestinians. Most colonisation projects around the world were like this. This is what Americans did to Indians, and what the Europeans did before them.

This is why “just read the headline” is so dangerous. Peaceful kids blocked from school, then gassed instead of the people fencing them in. At minimum, folks should be emailing their reps this article.

125
IOnlyFearOFGod 5 days ago +76
By making palestinians uneducated, constantly harassed and subjected to unfair laws. They are really creating future "terrorists". Then in the future they will go "See? they want to kill us! We just want to live in peace!" as they rain bombs from the skies. And when questioned on their actions "what are you? anti semitic? That was self defense! the terrorist i made by creating an environment that is hostile to them totally gives me justification to bomb them even more!".
76
SixOnTheBeach 5 days ago +45
Not ironically. That's the intended consequence. It's the same reason Israel secretly funded Hamas; because they thought the PLO came off as too moderate/reasonable to the West. They *want* terrorists because then they have a reason to attack and occupy them. It becomes much harder to defend a Hamas than it does a PLO, and they're not seen as unreasonable when they refuse to negotiate with them.

Literally. This is third-hand information, you get what you paid for it, but my brother was on a trip and met someone who had been (was still in?) the IDF... that's exactly what she said. We have to kill the children because they're going to grow up to be terrorists.

this. very few if any israeli founders went thru the holocaust and when holocaust survivors got to israel they had a terrible time and were seen as failures who gave up on zionism to stay and be murdered in europe. israel is so weird man
122
MyGoodOldFriend 5 days ago +23
The Holocaust survivors who ended up in Israel largely came from displaced persons camps, which had abysmal conditions. They were the ones who could not get their property back for one reason or another (usually, obviously, antisemitism). So it was a flood of largely malnourished, traumatized people. A very easy target for state-legitimizing propaganda. Speaking of founders of Israel who lived through the Holocaust, I have to mention Abba Kovner, who is so… I have complicated feelings about him. On the one hand, he is one of the most iconic and awesome partisans of WW2, and I recommend reading up on him. He also wanted to kill a ton of Germans after ww2 ended, and tried to poison SS officers in a POW camp, which… can’t blame the man. On the other hand, he wrote very questionable things about Egyptians and associated revenge for the Holocaust with the Arabs they were fighting in 1948, which… man. Sucks.

The Israeli leader, during the trial for Eichmann I believe, also criticized European Jews as weak and subservient for allowing the Holocaust to happen.

Too true. Israeli’s have become what they feared. My fellow Americans are all slowly waking up to this fact, as we realize how deep that state has a hold in our politics. But I fear it may be too slow tbh
52
voidox 5 days ago +47
> Israeli’s have become what they feared eh, if you look at history, the zionists and founders of Israel didn't really care about the holocaust, they [only cared about the PR value of the holocaust](https://weeklyworker.co.uk/worker/1181/zionism-and-holocaustabuse/), not the victims as [they hated said victims](https://mondoweiss.net/2019/05/the-strong-weak/). they never feared becoming the Nazis, they learned what they could from it. And this went on even during the holocaust, they only cared about how they could use the holocaust to promote Israel and zionism: > As early as September 1942, when most of Europe’s Jews were still alive, the Zionists were thinking of creating a memorial to them. The creation of Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre, was proposed. This was seen as “the very last opportunity to score any financial success”.39 At this time the Jewish Agency had not even acknowledged that there was a holocaust. Tom Segev comments: > > "There was no clearer, more grotesque, even macabre expression of the tendency to think of the holocaust in the past tense: while the Yishuv discussed the most appropriate way to memorialise them, most of the victims were still alive." > > Gerhard Riegner, the World Jewish Congress representative in Geneva during the war, articulated how the Zionist movement saw the holocaust. He believed that: > > "Auschwitz was not only a national memory belonging to the Jewish people … it was also an important political asset. Among other things it served the diplomatic efforts of both the WJC and Israel." > > For Zionism the proposed Jewish state was eternal. The Jews who died in the holocaust would have died anyway. This is not dissimilar to the fascist idea that the state is everything, the individual is nothing. Ben-Gurion only cared about the state not the people they claimed Israel was founded to "protect". [Here is a link](https://weeklyworker.co.uk/worker/1181/zionism-and-holocaustabuse/) to the many quotes, speeches, thoughts, writings by these ppl on the holocaust, and I'll just quote one by Ben-Gurion showing this insanity: > In spite of the certainty that genocide was being carried out, the Jewish Agency executive did not deviate appreciably from its routine ... Two facts can be definitively stated: Ben-Gurion did not put the rescue effort above Zionist politics and he did not regard it as a principle task demanding his personal leadership. > > Ben-Gurion was clear that in the event of “a conflict of interest between saving individual Jews and the good of the Zionist enterprise, we shall say the enterprise comes first” > > From the outset of the war the Zionists took a conscious decision that their priority was the building of a Jewish state, not the rescue of Jews from Europe. They actively opposed Jews going anywhere but Palestine. When Britain agreed to the Kindertransport - the admission of 10,000 Jewish children from Germany after the Krystallnacht pogrom - David Ben Gurion was furious. > “If I knew that it was possible to save all the children of Germany by transporting them to England, and only half by transferring them to the Land of Israel, I would choose the latter, for before us lies not only the numbers of these children but the historical reckoning of the people of Israel.” - Ben-Gurion (Quoted on pp 855-56 in Shabtai Teveth’s Ben-Gurion in a slightly different translation). Zionism had nothing to do with Judaism, talking about Herzl's version here and the now revisionist Zionism that is the zionism of today, hence why many religious Jews called out and wanted nothing to do with Herzl and his ethnonationalist movement. But I digress, a lot of history here to go into and all that. Just look at how Israel has always treated holocaust victims: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/one-third-of-israeli-holocaust-survivors-live-in-poverty-advocates-say https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/israel-middle-east/articles/israel-abuses-holocaust-survivors https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7627438/ https://kb.osu.edu/server/api/core/bitstreams/367cb008-aa0c-5da7-ac6d-8f62a4e0ac7a/content https://palestinenexus.com/articles/zionists-holocaust-survivors https://www.h-net.org/reviews/showrev.php?id=4060

Yup, they have become what they feared, what they collectively had to endure. On the one hand, judaism is kinda primed to be super racist, right? They are the “chosen people” and this makes them extra special. They have a god given right to certain lands. Their history has examples of putting to the sword all non-hebrews. But on the other hand there is also a rich history and theology of being welcoming to others, to foreigners, to the sick, poor, widowed and orphaned. A deep sense of personhood, of the sanctity of life. A most curious sort of thing this sort of split. Over the centuries Jews were conquered, exiled, chased off, had blame placed on them for stuff they couldn’t possibly have been responsible. They were prevented from owning property. From weaving and blending into larger society. Most infamously they, as a group, endured what industrialized murder had to offer. Terrible things. So, to see the modern state of Israel fall into the same sort of vilification of others, the demonization of there neighbors, to do to Palestinians what was done by Nazis, Russians, poles, Spaniards, Romans and even themselves, is kinda maddening. And it is more deeply maddening that the crimes that the state of Israel commits are tolerated, they are accepted and even condoned. Jews, Israelis, Palestinians, etc. all have a right to exist. They have a right to live in peace same as the rest of us. But Netanyahu and his predecessors are not bringing peace. Not for anyone.

Nobody has a problem with Judaism or any religion- but the moment anybody uses religion to justify, wars, battle, genocide, take over and/or ethnic cleansing then it becomes a real problem, the international community should work to rectify and fix the situation, maybe mediate and perform true justice. Instead they are rewarding depravity and evil scums with more money. Not only that they hide behind Judaism every time they are criticized for their actions, they play the pity game. It truly sucks for everybody involved- except the Israeli government. So genuinely, f*** US and Some of EU for rewarding this monster, and also f*** Israel for engaging in deplorable actions. Lastly f*** anyone and everyone who targets children, women, hospital and whatever breaks the international laws.

You know why, they are devoid of empathy for others, especially those that don't look like them. They were raised with prejudices, fear and hatred. 45
TheModWhoShaggedMe 5 days ago +19
You might be surprised when pigs fly then because the remaining AIPAC Democrats are going to be primaried and it will become the only major party not beholden to Israeli related donor backing. The only question is -- who is going to fill that substantial fundraising gap for liberals and progressives? If a large group doesn't step up, moderates and the left will get trounced by conservatives in campaign funding.
