“Senior figures in parties opposed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with opposition leaders, have approached individuals linked to US President Donald Trump, urging them to press him not to intervene in Israel’s upcoming elections. They fear he could step in and support Netanyahu against rival candidates.” Shouldn’t people who are against Bibi want his opposition to win?

Pressing Trump to not do something is the wrong way to go about it.

Yeah he doesn't have a great track record of respecting when someone says "no."

yes. This is the relatively good side. At least not criminal. Just hoping they also have trump videos.

Yeah, like just cuz it says "israeli" doesn't mean they're all insane, just like how not all americans are trumpies.

shittyaltpornaccount Apr 3, 2026 +1
While true it should be noted the majority of Israeli citizens support the war against Iran wholeheartedly and their parliament just brought back the death penalty specifically for Palestinians accused of being terrorists. Netanyahu might be the most corrupt and warmongering prime minister they have ever had, but the Israeli people keep electing his party and those further right of his party comapred to the center left and tje progressives haven't had a say in politics for over 20 years. It is not everyone, but it is broadly more popular than the American's support for war, which is the lowest in modern history

This comment section is outing itself on who hates Israel on principle and always will no matter what they do. It's like getting mad at Democrats for trying to take down Trump.
100
StoneySteve420 Apr 3, 2026 +30
Wait till you learn people disapproved of Israel before Bibi.
30
Large_Mountain_Jew Apr 3, 2026 +10
Damn that's so crazy. I wonder if they just disapprove of their leaders and would theoretically welcome opposition leaders who start taking the country in a better direction or if they're going to disapprove no matter what, which is what I was getting at in my post.
10
shittyaltpornaccount Apr 3, 2026 +1
The progressive movement has been dead in Israel for decades. The best you will get is a centre left coalition that doesn't differ in policy on Palestinians and Iran, just in its execution and tone, alongside being far less corrupt profiteers. Better yes, but I wouldn't hold my breath that Netanyahu being ousted would suddenly put a two state solution on the horizon or stop the evictions from the West Bank.

Amazing_Athlete_2265 Apr 3, 2026 +19
> Democrats for trying to take down Trump Now would be a great time. When can we expect this to occur?
19
ttinchung111 Apr 3, 2026 +14
When they get any political power, people didnt vote so they lost the house the Senate and they have control over the judiciary what do you want them to do exactly?
14
Large_Mountain_Jew Apr 3, 2026 +6
Some are trying harder than others but there's only so much that those pockets of stronger resistance can do that's also legal.
6
MKW69 Apr 3, 2026
More that people let Trump take power with midterms and presidential elections, after he packed Supreme Court.
0
Large_Mountain_Jew Apr 3, 2026 +2
Those aren't mutually exclusive. Certain parts of the country either let those things happen or wanted them to happen. And the rest of the country doesn't have enough methods to legally oppose that. We also don't really have an opposition leader and that needs to change as soon as possible.
2
backflash Apr 3, 2026 +1
Reread the headline. The key word is "opposition."
1

I feel like I just swam into a sea of illiteracy. How are so many people seemingly misunderstanding this headline?

He's also the reason our conservative party in Australia suffered it's worst electoral defeat since the 1940s and gave our current centre left party an unprecedented majority. Turns out the majority of Australians look at the seps and think 'yeah nah f****** none of that please'

Wouldnt it be better if israeli opposition wins and Netanyahu goes to prison? I assume they are worried Trump will help Netanyahu win.
233
FecklessFool Apr 3, 2026 +86
Yeah. So it's such a weird comment by infinitedeveloper lol
86
RonnieDubbz Apr 3, 2026 +15
It's not that weird. You think if netenyahu loses that Israel will just cease to be a part of American politics?
15
F4ntasticPants Apr 3, 2026 +11
No, but if he loses it will be a major shift in Israeli politics. The left hasn't been fully in charge in Israel in nearly 2 decades.
11
MaddingtonBear Apr 3, 2026 +1
The most probable candidate to replace Netanyahu (Bennett) is actually further to the right of Netanyahu, though the governing coalition he would likely build would be a broad tent right-center-"left" coalition. Second most likely would be someone center-right (Eisenkot). The only party that could be defined as the left has no chance of winning. It's been more than 2 decades - the last PM from the left was Ehud Barak, who left office in 2001.
1
dontdomilk Apr 3, 2026 +1
Suicide bombs and rockets will do that, yea
1
ipsumdeiamoamasamat Apr 3, 2026 -9
Netanyahu is never going to prison. He’s been prime minister for 20 years at this point. He’s rigged the system in his favor.
-9
Elegantsurf Apr 3, 2026 +6
He wasn't prime minster 4 years ago
6
F4ntasticPants Apr 3, 2026 +4
Yeah, in a brief period, during half of which *one of his own ex party members* was prime-minister. And then he got right back to it.
4
Elegantsurf Apr 3, 2026 +3
When was Lapid in Likud?
3
F4ntasticPants Apr 3, 2026 +2
I was talking about Benet
2
Elegantsurf Apr 3, 2026
Also never in Likud He started in his own party.
0
F4ntasticPants Apr 3, 2026 +1
Fair enough. I had to double-check, he was merely in a coalition with likud

24

wouldn’t that be great
25
Docile_Penguin33 Apr 3, 2026 -7
What? You think there's some kind of American-Israel public affairs committee spending $100m to influence hundreds of congressional races? What a crackpot conspiracy.
-7
Elegantsurf Apr 3, 2026 +6
American citizens fund it
6
binocular_gems Apr 3, 2026 +17
I suspect not but is there some chance that Trump would affect Israeli elections in the same way he affects American elections, by harming the candidates he endorses?
17
roguemenace Apr 3, 2026 +19
Trump basically swung the most recent Canadian election.
19
Dougalishere Apr 3, 2026 +4
thank god canadians looked at the shit show and went NOPE,, here in the UK there is not small amount of people that are looking at the US and thinking "yep what we need is THAT" and there is not a 0% chance we elect the steaming pile of shit Temu Trump
4
Hungry_Muscle_3051 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Well don't forget he was literally saying he'd annex us, so it was less of us saying "nope" and more of us saying more of us saying f*** right off to him and our politicians that didn't immediately disavow him. Our conservative party waited so long to say anything about Trump because they knew a portion of their base liked Trump.
2
Dougalishere Apr 3, 2026
yeah sorry it was an understated NOPE :) I understand it was a giant f*** all the way off you pedo criminal c***
0
softcottons Apr 3, 2026 +1
We also looked at the shit show and the last tory government and gave Labour a supermajority! They might not be as left as they used to be, but I’m proud of us for coming together as a country and saying NO. The US needs to stay out of foreign elections and let us decide for ourselves.
1
Gen_Zion Apr 3, 2026 +1
0 chance. I'm not saying that his recommendation would have significant positive influence on whomever he endorses. But there is 0 chance of harming. Trump is seen in very positive way in Israel.
1
housewifing Apr 3, 2026 +14
Trump repeatedly made explicit pro– Netanyahu statements in critical points since he was re-elected. At one point, he stood at the Knesset and suggested that Netanyahu should be "pardoned". In Israel, however, a pardon is only possible after a conviction. Netanyahu then leveraged Trump’s remarks to push aggressively for the complete cancellation of his corruption trial, without admitting guilt, without punishment, and of course without a conviction. Trump also consistently praises Netanyahu’s leadership while portraying the opposing political camp as weak. More broadly, Trump tied Netanyahu personally to what he framed as past U.S.–Israel “successes” during his presidency, implicitly strengthening Netanyahu’s legitimacy and political narrative. Legitimacy has been and still is a major issue in Israeli politics since October 7th. A significant portion of the Israeli public naturally holds holds the current government and its head responsible for the failures surrounding October 7. It used to be 80% of the people at some point. Everything that happened in Israel in the past two and a half years is netanyahu's quest to regain legitimacy and political standing and make Israelis forget his failures. This includes some of the campaigns during the war in gaza, and of course the war with iran. Trump has been a major part of this, hopefully one day we'll know what he gets in return.
14
Acceptable_Feed7004 Apr 3, 2026 +1
All of this is only persuasive if you value Trump's opinion. And f*** anybody stupid enough to do that.

The irony and hypocrisy in that statement 🙄

They’re the opposition parties. They’re warning Miriam Adelson who has provided Trump over a quarter billion dollars and well over $600M overall in recent years to Republicans.

Miriam Adelson is a troublesome human. And that is pretty much the nicest thing that could be said about her.

Antisemites from the West getting triggered every time they read “Israel”. As a non-Jew and non-American/non-Israeli ex-Muslim, who sees the antisemitism on both sides of the ideological divide hiding behind antizionism obvious, I find this hilarious.

Read what I wrote again. And then read your reply. Maybe you’d see what I mean when I say “I think you suffer from low reading comprehension”. I’m not paying for your war. Im not benefitting from your war. Your war has put the prices of common commodities in the third world country I live in ridiculously high. While in your country you have stores of oil for months ahead, 16% of the population here live in extreme poverty. We’ve secured our oil, so as far as we are concerned, this is between you and Iran. And we don’t have the privilege or luxury to talk about where our taxpayers money here going since it all goes into our politician’s pockets over, with no social welfare system or safety net in existence for us. You don’t work in this country, you literally starve on the streets in full view of everyone. That’s just how it is where I am. So I come from a place very far away from middle America in every conceivable way. Now consider that before reading what’s next. I just find it funny and tragic how so many of you go to: “it’s because of the Jews” at times like this. It’s like you’re looking for scapegoats for everything and they’re the easiest punching bag you can legally use. It seems like age old prejudices over there really do seem to die hard. And don’t worry, among the adherents of my former religion, everyone does the same thing too. So this illogical scapegoating and hate is nothing new under the sun.

Fair point elections are a sovereign matter. Even indirect influence from figures linked to Donald Trump can raise concerns about interference, especially in a sensitive political climate.

You wouldn't believe how opinions are extremely differing from person to person in Israel regarding Palestinians. All you're hearing in the media are the extremists, and yes, those are basically saying the same thing, but you cannot generalize that over the entire country.

I think the Israeli opposition warned Trump to stop the war; if the Iranian regime changes, then Netanyahu can win the election, and with US help, Isreal want to win the war at any cost, but all this posible with the help of the USA.

S0LO_Bot Apr 3, 2026 +3
I don’t blame you for it. The government has made plenty of abhorrent decisions over the decades, and to top it off Israel’s democracy isn’t really in a great state nowadays. Although this is less to do with lack of representation and more to do with the opposition parties being unable to form a decent coalition. The current government has multiple high ranking officials (including the PM) under investigation for corruption. Also indicted by ICC for war crimes. The opposition is fragmented and can’t form a proper coalition. Liberal Jews aren’t the demographic they once were in Israel and the centrists seem to vote all over the place. What makes it worse is that few of the left-leaning parties seem great at working with the allied opposition (like the Muslim-adjacent parties). It’s also worth considering that the opposite (and unnervingly popular) component of the opposition is even more extreme right-wing than the current government. Also, Rabin was assassinated by a right wing extremist, not (as far as we know) by the Israeli government. There are some conspiracy theories that the gov. was involved but nothing has been proven thus far.
3
gurnard Apr 3, 2026 +3
No, it's just that various flavours of right-wing nationalists are much better at setting differences aside and forming coalitions. Left-wing factional infighting rolls out the red carpet for them. This is far from a uniquely Israeli problem. Well-functioning democracies don't necessarily represent the will of the electorate when sociopaths excel at gaming the system. The Yitzhak Rabin assassination was a shocking event that still reverberates. Definitely not normal.
