They weren't convicted because the case never saw a courtroom due to political pressure from the far right. Frankly, that's disgusting.
It's hard to get people to understand why Israel is an important place of sanctuary for people while atrocities like these go unpunished, and a significantly less serious crime against a statue does not.
It's bad in so many ways: it fails to discourage similar behaviour in others, it corrodes Israel's image around the world, it's fundamentally wrong and immoral, even setting aside the many ways it's not pragmatic.
Every time the Israel far right is appeased, Israel inches closer to being the caricature that it's being painted as.
