Yesterday Spain. Italy today. Who's next

Apparently France? While they have no US bases that they can block, they have disallowed overflights of planes involved in the war. And the UK has also baned the US from using UK airports for the war.
301
ikkake_ Apr 1, 2026 +73
UK did? Again? Or are you talking about the short ban in the first 2 days? because there was fuckloads oh b1s flying over .
73
P01135809-Trump Apr 1, 2026 +28
The UK said they couldn't land... so they are cracking air to air refuelling over the UK instead. Half a step in the right direction but then caved in.

Alternative_Hour_614 Apr 1, 2026 +14
Do you mean civilian airports or military bases? Because US military aircraft are still using RAF bases: [https://www.twz.com/news-features/ea-37b-compass-call-electronic-attack-jets-cross-the-pond-middle-east-next](https://www.twz.com/news-features/ea-37b-compass-call-electronic-attack-jets-cross-the-pond-middle-east-next)

France came out today saying they didn't ban all planes going to Israel. So I don't know what's true.
3
Armec Apr 1, 2026 +2
France is still allowing some aircraft to transit and some KC135 are also based in southern France for refuelling operations over Israel

Nah, we are epic US and Israel bootlickers. The narrative goes, we hate and feel threatened by Turkey, Israel hates Turkey too, thus we must appease and support Israel any way we can since they ll be our allies against Turkey in a potential conflict. Apparently, the majority of the population gets convinced by this hogwash...

It would be a weird day when Turkey is the "hero" for our government oh wait, what am I saying, Erdogan is an authoritarian t*** so of course Trump loves him, just like Orban and Putie

Hopefully everyone else. Nobody wants this. As much as I don't want to see our soldiers die, other nations have no reason to get involved. Ffs I've still yet to hear a good reason why we're even involved.

USA figuring out what EU is now. Can’t bully Spain and think rest of EU will remain quiet
42

why don't EU do that all together?
3
Randy_Magnums Apr 1, 2026 +4
As a German, I am waiting for the US to get their shit out of Ramstein. They misbehaved for years and now with their current leader they aren’t trustworthy anymore.
4
Drak_is_Right Apr 1, 2026 -20
Have fun with Putin as your ruler then Yes US soldiers often misbehave and Trump is an ass, but the base is vital to western EU security.
-20
Randy_Magnums Apr 1, 2026 +15
Putins biggest ally is the current US-Administration.
15
ArchdukeToes Apr 1, 2026 +3
This would be the same Putin who can’t even reach Kyiv, right? How the hell is he meant to get across Poland (who have been arming up like there’s no tomorrow) and hold Ukraine? Utterly laughable.
3
SmegmaWarrior0815 Apr 1, 2026 +7
Can't even conquer Ukraine but is supposed to conquer Europe. Sure.
7
Kataphractoi Apr 1, 2026 +5
Putin can't even hold onto seized territory in Ukraine and they'd have to go through Poland to get to Germany, and Poland is itching for a reason to roll up Russia. Putin isn't going to do shit.
5
CrockTop Apr 1, 2026 +3
Trump is Putin's b**** so guess its the same boss so good for ya'll!
3
Randy_Magnums Apr 1, 2026 +3
Are you sure? The US-Engagement in the Middle East has been a disaster, destabilizing the whole region, and causing many of the problems, Europe is facing today. Be it unstable governments and refugee movement. And all of these operations were handled in Ramstein. It seems that the base is a major detriment to Europes security.

7

>*By contrast, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump and has so far refrained from taking a hard line against the Iran war, though she has vowed to seek parliamentary approval should Washington request the use of Italian bases.* It's the opposition parties toward the left that she's most concerned about.
161
Infamous-Sky-1874 Mar 31, 2026 +81
She's probably also getting pushback from her own side as well because of the potential war refugee issue.
81
Saorren Mar 31, 2026 +39
yea, the refugee crises from a country with the population of iran would be no small thing either.
39
Infamous-Sky-1874 Mar 31, 2026 +43
And it isn't just Iranian refugees. Take out enough desalination plants and other vital infrastructure in the Gulf States and you will start having civilians packing up and running towards North Africa and Europe.

So dumb. I hate the reputation the French have in the US. We wouldn’t even exist without you guys.
112
VideoRare6399 Mar 31, 2026 +103
I’m glad the French have this reputation in US because it shows how idiotic half this country is.  We should’ve been much harsher on the confederacy and the next democrat in office needs to eviscerate all confederate memorials everywhere with a greater tenacity than trump shows now.  If democrats cave and play to reunite the country then we’re complete f****** idiots.  The fact Trump was allowed to run again and not rot in prison along with the other Jan 6ers is a disgrace to our country. The Supreme Court’s immunity ruling shows how absurd this whole f****** thing is.
103
GetsBetterAfterAFew Mar 31, 2026 +35
Wow finally found a like minded human who agrees with me that Americans largest error was not absolutely eviscerating and leveling the South and purged the slavers and ran the 1st Hauge trial on half the country. Literally raize the entire fuckin South... but nope, its a joke we call it Reconstruction because the only thing that got reconstructed was slavery mentality and the birth of the American Prison system that continues to this day, slavery. Edit - Think about what the South would have done to the North had they won? No quarter, absolutely no quarter. This was war, why we didnt treat the ending like war is beyond me.
35
AuggieNorth Mar 31, 2026 -14
That's not really true. The South was never going to take over the North. I don't agree with their cause, but they were fighting to be left alone to practice their "peculiar institution", not to force it on the North.
-14
mimd-101 Apr 1, 2026 -7
Don't waste your time with these people. They are arguing to kill everyone on a losing side in an old crappy civil war, genocide, due to their delusions of politics, all of which is not even remotely related to the article at hand.
-7
Soupeeee Apr 1, 2026 +6
My genius policy is to make some kind of rule that says that if more than two executive orders are found to be unconditional, the president gets booted. Even if you somehow accept that presidents have Immunity, there should be a limit.
6
drumzandice Apr 1, 2026 +1
Spoiler alert: sadly the Dems have no balls, they will try to play nice and "lower the rancor." There will be no trials or prison for Hegeseth, Nome, Trump or any of the other war and domestic criminals.
1
ICaseyHearMeRoar Mar 31, 2026 -6
The French were sympathetic to the Confederacy and contemplated joining the war in support of the Confederacy. Let's not pretend like they were being altruistic by supporting the American Revolution when really, they were just trying to hurt the British.

The difference back then is after the 80's and 90's the US was in a sort of lull of peace and 9/11 made everyone freak out and feel vulnerable and created a nationalistic fervor. That doesn't exist anymore.
3

Brother, England itself would be a redneck tribal island by today if it weren't for Rome first and the French kingdom next. Yeah you helped during WWII, but trust me, thankfulness has its limits, and you already got too much from Europe between meddling, propaganda and exploitation, you should be thankful as a north american to everyone else in the world, USA has like a couple days of history in contrast, and that's why WWII is the only argument you can use

Reputation or propaganda?  Do you even know the difference?
-8
sgtabn173 Mar 31, 2026 +6

22
fnordal Mar 31, 2026 +27
The accords says that the US has to ask in advance, and we can give permission. They didn't ask and tried to make it fait accompli. Right now Meloni can't risk it, and she promised to pass any request to the parliament. So the defense minister said, no, rightfully so.

It's disgraceful to call moderate centrist leaders who were democratically elected such insane lies

8
leeta0028 Apr 1, 2026 +4
To be technical, neither Hitler nor Moussolini were ever really elected. Both were appointed, Hitler much more legitimately than Moussolini (the president foolishly believing appointing Hitler was the only way to get the deadlocked parliament to form a government despite the Nazis actually losing in the most recent election).  Trump actually won the popular vote this time so the American people did indeed vote for higher gas prices, more expensive groceries, more wars, losing wars, weakness on the global stage, higher deficits, higher healthcare costs...
4

Four_beastlings Apr 1, 2026 +1
It can't possibly be that twice already we've gone to the aid of the US in their Middle Eastern wars, our people have bled and died for them, and they've repaid us by saying we never did anything for them, that we stayed to the side in Iraq and Afghanistan, threatening to invade us, slapping tariffs on us for no reason, constantly insulted us, etc. My husband has spinal damage and constant pain for all the "staying to the side" he did. He was told he was helping liberate the people of Afghanistan from oppression and after Trump gifted Afghanistan to the Taliban and let the Afghan people worse than they were before the war he fell into a deep depression. The US can go f*** itself with their senseless wars.

Likewise, Spain closed off its airspace to U.S. planes involved in Trump's Iran War. Yes, it's amazing. A country can ask another country for something, and the other country can say "No". They're not powerless or required to say "Yes". They're not a helpless victim if the other country says they want something. Spoiler alert: this is Trump's Iran War of choice, no matter who asked him to attack Iran.

Why would anyone want to get involved in this disastrous shit show? The Iran war was an insanely bad idea since the beginning and the consequences of it are already devastating on both a humanitarian and global scale. The Trump administration has a history of destroying everything around them through pure selfishness, narcissism, and idiocy and leaving the consequences of everything else. He should have been in jail for life for the litany of felonies he committed by trying to overthrow the 2020 election, but instead we have the historic disaster that is his second term so far.

>The report did not specify when the aircraft were due to land but said permission was denied because the U.S. had not requested clearance and Italy's military leadership had not been consulted, as required under treaties governing the use of U.S. military installations in the country. In other words, there's a right way and a wrong way to use another nation's airbases. But the Trump regime, being stupid bullies, didn't bother doing it the right way. Now they've been rejected by even a fascist government.
13
fevered_visions Apr 1, 2026 +1
Trump has already threatened to invade half a dozen countries. Of course nobody should be willing to accept "hey, so we're going to land some warplanes unannounced in your country at some point in the next month. don't worry about it"

RuinedbyReading1 Mar 31, 2026 +6
This isn't a blanket anti war statement by Italy. Rather, the US tried to land planes that violated the terms of the treaty governing the base. The US planes were already in the air when they requested to use the base. Because of the treaty, they required a parliamentary waiver before the planes could land. There was not enough time to get that approval, since the planes were already flying, so Italy had to say no. Landing the planes without the parliamentary waiver would have violated the treaty. It might have turned out differently if the US had made the request in advance. Edit: From earlier coverage by the Guardian: "A source at the Italian defence ministry confirmed a report in Corriere della Sera that “some US bombers” had been due to land at Sigonella – a key US navy installation and Nato base – before heading to the Middle East. According to treaties signed in the late 1950s, the US navy can use the base for logistical and training purposes but not as a transit hub for aircraft used to transport weapons for war unless in an emergency situation, permission for which needs to be approved in parliament. The source said the US had only sought permission to land the aircraft while they were en route to Sicily, therefore failing to follow procedures that require authorisation to be approved in parliament. It is unclear when the aircraft had been due to land at the base but the source said there was no time to seek approval in parliament."
6
son-of-a-mother Apr 1, 2026 +3
Of course it is an anti-war stance. If Italy wanted to support the U.S.' war of aggression, they would have interpreted the U.S.' request in a way that allows them to do so (e.g., framing it as a defensive move). Italy wants no part of the U.S. and its wars of greed and aggression.
3
