Italy summons Israeli ambassador after shots fired at UN in Lebanon
ROME, April 8 - Italy summoned the Israeli ambassador on Wednesday to demand an explanation over shots fired at an Italian convoy in a U.N. mission in Lebanon, the foreign minister said, warning Israeli forces had \"no authority to touch\" Rome's troops. On April 8, Italy summoned the Israeli ambassador to demand an explanation after Israeli forces fired warning shots at an Italian convoy within the U.N. peacekeeping mission (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon. The convoy, traveling from Shama to Beirut, was struck by the shots about 2 kilometers into its journey, causing damage to a vehicle but no injuries. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani condemned the incident, stating Israeli forces had no authority to target Italian troops. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto described the attack as a serious threat to the safety of peacekeepers and the credibility of the mission. He urged the United Nations to intervene with Israeli authorities to ensure the safety of UNIFIL personnel. This incident comes amid rising tensions, with Israel intensifying strikes on Lebanon as part of its ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, asserting that a ceasefire involving the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran does not apply in Lebanon.

I don’t think you can call them a warning shots if you actually hit the target with them

They behave like absolute pricks because they have always had the US on a short leash. In no way should a tiny country like Israel even consider f****** with a middle power like Italy, especially a peacekeeping mission.

Tiny in land mass only. Israel is a far superior military power to Italy.

Israel's military is only superior when compared to it's neighbors and only then because of the US MIC (military industrial complex).

Military doesn’t matter at all. Neither country is going to go to war over anything so inconsequential. But loss of influence, soft power and economic pain are concerns for both nations.

I'd imagine Italy or any western country would be very fucked up very quickly if thousands of drones, ballistic missiles, and other ordinance were fired at it for one day let alone weeks. Our biggest defence is being out of range.
46
SeaworthinessSome454 2 days ago +26
No, it still matters a ton. It means less when you’re willing to go to the lengths that they are and not have high regard for life, but it still matters a lot. This war has only been going on for a few weeks. Ppl expect results way too quickly, on the scale of war, this one is still an infant.
26
Shoot_from_the_Quip 2 days ago -10
This war has burst the "we better not mess with them" balloon that has kept many nations safe all these years. I would not be surprised at all if this fiasco leads to a huge surge in terror attacks simply because the world's largest military superpower has had its ass handed to it in barely a month. Why not go after formerly off-limits targets if you no longer fear the reprisal? Deterrence was much more potent when the mere thought of what could be unleashed was still present vs this underwhelming reality.

Israel has about 1/5 the population and the GDP of italy. no matter how militarized they are, unless they pull out some miracle tactics a 1v1 vs italy would be a stomp for pasta.
10
SeaworthinessSome454 2 days ago +4
It’s not population or gdp. It’s active military and active military capability. Nobody gets a 5 year heads up that a war is coming to start training soldiers and buying equipment. You have to be prepared around the clock, and Israel is. Raw population and gdp was important in early 20th century wars but not anymore. Add into that Israel’s tremendous experience advantage.
4
Vimmelklantig 2 days ago +10
Italy has a significant military of its own but is also in a political union and two defence pacts. With the EU (population 450 million) via the Lisbon treaty and then NATO which includes almost all of the EU + the UK, Turkey and Canada (another 200 million). I'm disregarding the US because, well \*waves hands\*. Even if you think GDP and population don't matter even at 65x the size (more for GDP), NATO without the US has north of 1.7 million active military personnel with several million more reserves, not to mention the advantage in materiel.

3
Busy_Still5871 2 days ago +19
When did we have to prop the European countries in a war since WW2? Israel on the other hand gets billions and billions in American taxpayer money and weapons to kill civilians. Stop funding and arming Israel.
19
SeaworthinessSome454 2 days ago -16
We literally have armed Europe since WW2. We fought the Cold War and the proxy wars bc we wanted to limit USSRs influence. Yes, that benefits the US but it also prevented Europe from being invaded. And now, we give massive amounts of aid to Ukraine (which I’m perfectly fine with btw) so that Europe still has their buffer zone from Russia. Europe should easily be able to defend Ukraine in their own but they’re too weak to do it, so the US has to come to their rescue.

5
SeaworthinessSome454 2 days ago +3
No, not naval. Israel doesn’t have much of a need for a navy. There’s also not much of a need for one in a hypothetical Israel/italy war. They’re close enough that neither side should need to launch attacks from a carrier.
3

Even in peacetime, Italy’s standing army is only slightly smaller than Israel’s during wartime. Should Italy pivot to a war economy, its industrial and economic power would quickly dwarf Israel’s military capacity.

>Defense Minister Guido Crosetto described the attack as a serious threat to the safety of peacekeepers and the credibility of the mission. He urged the United Nations to intervene with Israeli authorities to ensure the safety of UNIFIL personnel. Hezbollah is currently engaged in open combat south of the Litani river, both things it is expressly forbidden from doing by UNSC resolution and that UNIFIL is supposed to enforce. The mission has no credibility. The UN personnel can't do the job they're supposed to do.

12
Drakmeister 2 days ago +6
The only real way forward is for Americans to actually put some effort into political reform. A parade, sorry, protest, on a Saturday every few months isn't doing enough. For the American people to expect the world to fall on its own sword to save the US from its own failure is insane when they have enough people and ability to make sweeping changes, but that would mean instability for them and that's too inconvenient because only right now matters, not 10 years from now. Sick and tired of toothless Americans whining about the state of things instead of putting their pants on and standing up for once.

By who? By the time they've achieved all their goals somewhere in the next 5 decades or so, its too late to do anything to hold them accountable as they're gonna brush it off as "its their ancestors the one committing it". Kinda like current Japan where they will refuse to acknowledge their atrocities during WW2, but we cant blame them because the people who actually committed all the atrocities are long gone.....while they're living proudly on top of their dead ancestors plundered riches.

Nepridiprav16 2 days ago +79
What job? UNIFIL’s primary role is to **support** the Lebanese Armed Forces. They aren't supposed to gointo private property or search homes for Hezbollah's rockets on their own, they are supposed to do it alongside the LAF. If you want to blame someone, blame useless Lebanese army for not disarming Hezbollah.
79
xmuskorx 2 days ago +131
UNIFIL has an expanded mandate to Monitor Hezbollah withdrawal: "and several further resolutions in 2006 to confirm Hezbollah demilitarisation" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Interim_Force_in_Lebanon But they never took that very seriously and essentially continued to see themselves as anti-Israel force only.

Because they're supposed to be in areas where there is tension, but rather, why are they getting shot at by a nation that is supposed to be our ally and got our support?
11
Lethaldiran-NoggenEU 2 days ago -26
My bet is fog of war and misidentification. There is nothing to gain from shooting an ally, would not be surprised if it was Hezbollah who opened fire. We still do not know all the details. Areas where there is tension? Where were they when Hezbollah shot his rockets in support of Iran.
-26
MagnificoReattore 2 days ago +4
Sure, it was probably the n-th mistake. It feels like they just don't care much about anyone else, even if they are allies.  Again, they are a peace force that is supposed to create a buffer zone to protect civilians. They are a not an attack force with the duty of getting rid of hostile militias, for that there is the army of the country they are in, they only provide support, otherwise it would be an illegal invasion.  If our ally wants a UN force to protect their civilians from rockets, they should invite them to their territory, why don't they ask for that instead of shooting them?

I don't think evidence backs this up. Israel certainly has a high acceptable casualty limit but they do, consistently make their life more difficult by taking extra steps to avoid civilian causalities. Is it enough to justify the civilian deaths they cause? That probably isn't an answerable question. But to say Israel has plenty of things to be critical of without painting them as monsters that actively try to kill civilians.
-9
TurelSun 2 days ago +4
Did they wave these acceptable casualty limits when they targeted the Italian UNIFIL troops? Because they have a history of very precise attacks against UNIFIL positions.

They systematically use double tap strikes to target medical workers once they come to the strikes sites to help the injured They did the same on a hospital in Gaza, the same in Beyrouth back in 2025 If they were trying to avoid hitting citizens, they wouldn't act like they did

No. The UN mission is to keep peace, monitor activity, and help the Lebanese army keep Hezbollah north of the Latani river. There is not peace, because Hezbollah broke the ceasefire (multiple times). Hezbollah is active south of the Latani river. The only thing close to upholding what they are supposed to do is “monitoring” the situation, by being present and doing absolutely nothing besides getting in the way, allowing Hezbollah to operate in close vicinity, and abusing the local population. So like I said, they haven’t upheld their part of the deal, so they should probably leave.

UNIFIL has allowed again the mandate they signed on to be there, for hezbollah to take control and set base in south lebanon, let alone literally right next to UNIFIL as israel shown not ao long ago. They are still there because they get the money to be there, and they have been there as a way to keep israel in check, not to do their job. I expect they lie again as they lied before about before, when they blamed israel rockets where shot at them, ended up failed rockets from hezbollah. Nothing that comes out of their mouth is a real truth. The moment the mandate was signed as irrelevant they should have got up and left. Not like they are doing their job now except trying to be human shields to hezbollah.
