Starting off, JJ Abrams’ production company was making some ground breaking projects like LOST and Cloverfield, and it really felt like Bad Robot was on its way in being a household name. From there, it just completely lost steam by forcing already great projects with the cloverfield branding. If they played their cards right, the Bad Robot brand could’ve been enough.
Just imagine if like a Pixar or A24, Bad Robot was filling a void of releasing yearly a risk-taking creative sci-fi movie. People would see the trailer, see the Bad Robot logo, and know that would be enough.
But yeah, that didn’t happen. It just makes me sad of what could’ve been instead of just slapping cloverfield on whatever projects they acquired.
Any success from Bad Robot would have to include Abrams learning that his bullshit “question box” ideology is indeed bullshit and that audiences like a well told stories not endless questions stacked like pancakes.
Abrams’ and crew are also some of the folks most guilty for Hollywood’s obsession with visuals over and at the sacrificial cost of all other elements of film making.
The company had flash and style and when it came down to actually putting quality of substance on the table they never passed the test.

Looking at their filmography, this isn’t true at all. It’s full of franchise movies. Star Trek, Star Wars, Cloverfield, and Mission: Impossible are a huge chunk of their movies.

Why did you cut out the beginning of that sentence? I said “just imagine if” at the start.

They've produced like 20 movies, with like 10 more on the slate. They've produced like 30 tv shows.
Exactly 2 of those have Cloverfield "slapped on". One of which was pretty decent and the other was garbage.
What the f*** are you talking about?

Over the course of 25 years with many of those films you probably never heard of.
What I’m talking about is I think thought provoking mid-budget sci-fi is a genre that’s severely lacking. Bad Robot gave us a taste of that and wish they had a projector similar to Pixar on concentrating on making one exceptional, stand-alone film each year
Edit: Thank god /u/rjmacready blocked me so I never have to read one of their comments again.

And what I'm talking about is your blatantly disingenuous assertion that they just slap the cloverfield title on everything they buy when it's not even close to being remotely true.
I couldn't care less about anything else you've said.

Ah gotcha. Really sorry I said that about your company, JJ. You’re right. You doing that to ONLY three of your most marketed projects was disingenuous of me

you’ve taken literally two examples of Cloverfield branding (Paradox and Lane) and are acting like that happened a hundred times. 10 Cloverfield Lane is also really good, so a terrible example of whatever you’re moaning about.
And I don’t know - Bad Robot is just Abrams. I don’t think there was ever an ambition to be A24 or Pixar. It’s not a studio at all.

The Chris Pin Star Trek movies?
The turn around of the Mission Impossible franchise?
Alias?
Fringe??
Person of Interest??
Westworld S1?!?
LOST?!?!
That short list alone is an absolutely massive slice of pop culture across the last 25 years... Some of y'all need to pull your heads out of your asses.

Can't say I am disappointed. Mostly because I never really got LOST or Cloverfield, but also, I typically look at production companies closely related to creatives as mostly about the creative and not the brand. I don't have a lot of expectations for them to do more than JJ's pet projects, which is fine. Its why creatives start production companies. I wouldnt compare it to Pixar or A24 though.

Ah gotcha. Growing up, LOST and Cloverfield were huge for me, especially the world building. I just want to see them tackle more projects like that again instead of their focus on existing IP and franchises.

What if a number of sci-fi movies over several years had all the problems of their famous non-writing? Guess we'll never know the answer.

Do you really think audiences have that reaction to the Pixar and A24 logos?

A recent podcast I listened to talked about how hard it is for any new studio to actually "make it" and become a big studio.
They don't have old IP to lean on in tough times, so they basically need a 60% hit rate for decades to remain solvent. An impossible task in movies. So, you need some kind of "side revenue" from something else to keep it steady in tough times.
