It’s Time to End the ‘Bachelor’ Franchise – The season-scrapping scandal around Taylor Frankie Paul is just the latest example of a long string of toxicity surrounding the ABC shows.

It doesn’t anymore. Ratings slipped a lot in the past few seasons and Taylor was their hail mary to inject some drama and bump the ratings. That failed because they were forced the cancel the whole thing and eat the costs.

What’s interesting to me is that this will undoubtedly draw eyeballs to the Mormon wives show. People will watch it from beginning to end. Another show is coming out of this one way or another. Same thing happened with Vanderpump Rules. It’s almost like they knew this would happen. It’s like a win win.

The Mormon Wives cast are refusing to film with Taylor after her most recent assault charges, so it’s somewhat likely she’ll be terminated from that as well.

They talk a lot about trying to elevate their brands, individually, and as a group.
“Momtok” gets sponsorships for their content occasionally, various members have used the attention as a springboard to get on Dancing with the Stars, starring as Roxie in Chicago, trying to get into fashion modeling, etc etc.
This Bachelorette thing was obviously a big deal for Taylor Frankie Paul, but the other girls were very excited to see all the attention it would bring them, additional opportunities and etc.
I think they recognize that Taylor was getting the biggest opportunity thus far, they really wanted it to go well. When she missed her initial flight to LA to start The Bachelorette, they all went to her house to convince her she *had* to go. She’d made a commitment, marketing had already started, etc etc.
I think they’re pretty serious about wanting her out. They all have bigger aspirations, and this drama is getting in the way of it. They’re basically guilty by association, and other shows and networks will think extra hard about casting *any* of these women.
Taylor Frankie Paul was the defacto leader of the group, they all said it. The first episode of their show is called “The Book of Taylor”, she’s always placed in the middle of the group shots. I think they’re more than happy to see her go, if it means someone else can take the lead and they can move on from this faster.

I definitely don’t think they knew this was going to happen. This is bad.
The fandom for SLOMW is kind of in shambles rn. Most people want Taylor off the show at this point, and the fandom is wrapped up in litigating what’s happening with Taylor/Dakota and the allegations surrounding the recent issue.
I don’t think this is necessarily going to hurt the show. But at this point something needs to happen.

Oh it would get watched. I’m not so foolish to think it wouldn’t. Hell I’d watch it lol. But as someone who has been watching this show roughly since its inception I’m beyond bored of the TFP/Dakota scandal at this point.
At this point, I don’t care about who did what to who or anything like that. Frankly you could replace a third of this cast and lose all the husbands (even Conner though I like him) and I’d enjoy the show way more. Keep the M’s, Whitney, Layla, and maybe Jen and this show will keep spinning along just fine.

Technically all the footage has been filmed, but only the first two episodes have been finished in post. The whole season is far from edited/made into episodes and now it never will be. Everyone on the post-production team is out of a job.

Ironically those shows all ended for an identical reason as this. You know how they’d take the contestants who didn’t win and put them in a game competition show between seasons, “I ❤️ Money” or something? One of them had to be cancelled with the entire season in the can because one of the contestants killed his girlfriend. The rumor was he’s the guy who won the season so there was no way to salvage it. That was the last of those shows I can remember, they didn’t really make more after that.

My SO watches a lot of the bachelor shows. So I’ve endured quite a bit of it over the years.
It is sort of structured like comfort food for its viewers. The show hits roughly the same beats. People use sort of this jargon internal to the show. There is a heavily produced aspect to it as well.
Especially heavy handed is how production puts the bachelor or bachelorette on this sort of pedestal and treated like a perfect person. Production clearly gives them a lot of media training and tries to keep them from looking bad. Because if they look like an ass, then why would the 30+ people they’re dating want to proceed? The person chosen to be the bachelor(ette) is usually a contestant from the previous season, who was relatively unproblematic and not the “villain” of that season and managed to show some personality to make it pretty far.
The drama is usually derived from the 30+ contestants fighting with each other or getting frustrated with a lack of one on one time with the bachelor(ette).
So yeah Drama is a huge part of the show but usually the bachelor(ette) is not the source of drama. They’re usually kind of boring and often not even around. They’re more of a prize to win than anything else. And all the contestants always talk about them in an idealized way. So picking a woman with a very public history of domestic violence was a huge departure for the show. And I guess they were worried about their brand which relies on a pretty loyal fanbase to be the ratings juggernaut it is.

Thank you for this breakdown, it’s the first perspective that makes me think the season might be truly shelved. I figured everyone is awful so how bad could this new “development” (which they already knew about) possibly be, but if she’s supposed to be a paragon of womanhood, this look is BAD.

the bachelor universe has been on life support with how popular all the streaming dating shows have become (love is blind, love island, etc) that this season was supposed to breathe life back into it + bring in the audience from secret lives of mormon wives
so the cost of scrapping an entire season and the loss of a new audience base might have them cutting their losses and just ending the franchise

C**** outrage is the best business model for TV. Minimal production costs that drive maximal engagement.
It’s polluting society’s moral fabric, destroying communities and causing the downfall of institutions that have helped drive a healthy society - but as long as it’s a c**** way to sell soap, it’ll never stop.

> But if it took a video of a child being injured to pull the show from TV, then the Bachelor franchise is beyond help. It’s time for it to go away.
The bar is so low now, for everything.
And frankly, I don't think child injury is even the bar. Like the article mentions, ABC left the door open to air it later.
And the brain-dead masses who make these people famous by consuming their "content" will love it, for the "drama" (let's just set aside the child abuse).

The entire reality show genre was born from toxicity. Hollywood greed toxicity. C****, easy, exploitable. Art should not be that way. That way is for p***.
That genre should not exist. If people want reality, they can go out on the street and see it up close.
22
SkorpioSoundMar 21, 2026
+13
> If people want reality, they can go out on the street and see it up close.
People want _curated_ 'reality', not _real_ reality. They want 'reality' where the people are prettier, the drama is juicier, the boring bits are cut out, and there are 'storylines'.
I suspect reality TV will continue to decline, though, as YouTube, Twitch, Instagram and TikTok take its place. There are plenty of people willing to broadcast their daily lives onto the internet for the world to see, bypassing the TV networks and production costs entirely. And for a lot of viewers, the parasocial aspect—being able to interact in comment sections or live chats, and feeling they have some kind of personal relationships with the people they're watching—is an additional level of appeal. That interactivity contributes to the fantasy of "maybe this person will fancy me back", makes it feel more tangible, etc.
So while I agree about reality as a genre largely being toxic, c**** and full of exploitation (of its 'stars' and audiences), I don't think it's going anyway. It's evolving, and it leaving the hands of TV producers is likely going to lead to it being even more toxic, unfortunately, as people make it their livelihoods, and as TV regulations stop applying.

Zig when everyone is expecting you to zag. Try to go super authentic and real. Cast zero wannabe influencers, plastic faces, LA wannabe's and fame chasers. Cast authentic real people who have been seriously vetted, filtered out the weirdos, the immature, and those not ready for a serious relationship/marriage.
On dates, show us the meaningful conversations, show fun slightly elevated but more down to earth dates, and focus on providing the couplings with good opportunities to get to know each other better (date design).
Just see if, in this world of fake stories, fake people, fame chasers and fake relationships, if authentic is a refreshing change of pace that brings ratings and buzz back to the franchise. Remove the melodrama, be all about trying to bring great people together and hopefully the final coupling ends up working out.

There are so many alternatives that basically do this concept better…I mean it’s basically trash and Love Island or Perfect Match are able to get away with a lot more because they largely drop the facade of this being a wholesome kind of show. The OG versions just feel dated at this point, and they’re unable to embrace the trash the same way the other shows can.

I enjoy the show and its ridiculous premise, usually - I thought the first golden bachelor was great. The contestants had heart and had lived lives. The only chance to reclaim the series is find a great lead who is actually likable. Might even be time to move the average age up to mid-thirties and see what happens. But yeah, the franchise is mortally wounded.

People watch Snoop Dogg in the Olympics and he literally killed someone. The show will end up being released, the people who watch this trash know these people are awful

Finally. After 34 years since The Real World premiered, people are pushing back on reality tv. I’m sure it’s just a blip in the big picture right now, but hopefully this is the start of viewers wanting to ditch this nasty genre. One can hope.

Why would a whole franchise be canceled because of one person’s scandal

It is a hot mess. One of the ‘Bachelorette’ contestants for this season was the driver who fell asleep at the wheel leading to the car crash that paralyzed Madison Cawthorn.

It's not the early 2000's anymore. No need for cable, no need to even watch only American shows . I can watch Singles Inferno now.

They aren’t going to cancel shit. And I have no clue what anyone expected out of this woman who’s only ever been famous due to swinging scandals and DV.
She literally gets arrested on the first episode of her show.

The whole concept of these shows is just taking emotionally damaged people and putting them in a position to be totally broken on TV.
