I've been drinking black coffee for a week trying to be a 'morning person' and honestly it's working but at what cost...

Posted by SignalEditor925

okay so i told myself this month i was gonna stop being a night owl and actually wake up early like a normal person. first day i took a sip of black coffee and genuinely wanted to cry. it tasted like burnt disappointment. but i kept going and now a week later i'm actually waking up at 6am without wanting to die?? like i'm getting stuff done before 9am which has never happened in my life the problem is i don't feel like myself anymore. i'm going to bed at 11, waking up early, drinking black coffee. who am i. my friends think i've had some kind of breakdown does it get weirder or does your body just accept the new reality at some point 😭

Why the black coffee if you don’t like it?

stevenriley1 Apr 2, 2026 +71
Right? Put some cream and sugar in it. It makes it tolerable.

Black coffee is absolutely lovely when it's done right with good beans

Or what about. Iced oat milk latte with caramel syrup, vanilla cold foam and cinnamon on top

Eat some protein with it, waking up early and blasting your body with sugar will set you up to crash. I was a night owl, had kids, and now am always up early even though they are night owl teenagers. Your body just gets used to its new normal.

Hahaha I completely appreciate your advice but that was some sarcasm . I usually avoid sugar at all time and for my sugar cravings coke zero is the way 😁😛

Sugar free syrups, coffee creamers, etc for the coffee. Also, are you eating with the coffee? It can be really hard on your stomach if not. Even if it's just a slice of peanut butter toast or a piece of fruit, something to eat will help you have sustained energy and ya know, no ulcers.

RoxyLA95 Apr 2, 2026 +3
I wouldn’t have that every day, but sounds yum.

caca_milis_ Apr 2, 2026 +3
Orrr… something you actually just enjoy? You don’t need to be as bitter as the shitty coffee you’re drinking.
3
achillea4 Apr 2, 2026 +4
That sounds unhealthy. I just make a flat white with almond milk. You don't get the sour aftertaste that you get with milk and it's less acidic on the stomach than black coffee. I don't understand why people put cream or heaps of sugar in coffee. Keep it simple.

That's a milkshake. I went down the coffee rabbit hole a decade ago. I'd recommend get a decent $30-$50 hand grinder, an aeropress, and good beans from a local roaster/cafe. You'll be making coffee good enough that you'll enjoy drinking it black.

willmuench Apr 2, 2026 +17
if it tastes like “burnt disappointment” its probably bad coffee, maybe try a different roaster or a lighter roast and see if its less painful or even enjoyable for you

I’m a night owl, and I always have been. Instead of trying to force myself to be a morning person, I just made sure that I arranged things in my life so I wouldn’t have to be. I can do mornings, just not happily.

Night owls unite! At a decent hour, let's say 10:30am

Oh not at least until eleven…

Look at it as living in a different timezone. You have an adjustment period and then you get used to it. If it works for your life, stick to it. If it hampers you, go back to your old timezone. It's nothing more than that. I've been both night owl and morning person based on my life requirements at the time. Currently, night owl suits me better, but who knows, maybe in the future getting up earlier would bring me more benefit so I'll switch back to that.

I went through this myself and it does get easier, now I wake up at 6 am even without an alarm. I switched to black cold brew coffee because it tastes sweeter naturally. Plus you can make it at home at the beginning of the week and have enough to last all week.

TheDapperYank Apr 2, 2026 +9
I mean, what kind of coffee are you drinking? Most if not all bulk coffee is overroasted (burnt to shit) for consistency. Go find a local roaster and try some freshly roasted light roast. You get lots of really interesting flavors when coffee is properly roasted. Ethiopian coffees black with no sugar will often have a blueberry flavor to them, South American coffees will often be a bit citrus-y, African coffees can either be really earthy or floral.

The best coffee I have ever had was gifted to me by my sister from her trip to Egypt. it was some local roast, so the bag was a generic bag without a brand. And it had chocolate notes. It's the only coffee I've ever been able to drink black. It was perfection. OP, coffee tastes different based on varietal, climate, location, roast... Just try different coffees. When I started drinking it, I went to Trader Joe's and World Market and bought a bunch of different ones until I figured out which I like best.

TheDapperYank Apr 2, 2026 +2
If you ever go to an Ethiopian restaurant that does the coffee ceremony, they roast the coffee fresh right there and it almost tastes like hot chocolate.
2
majandess Apr 2, 2026 +1
I don't live near one, but I will make sure to go when I find one! I know that, in Europe, chocolate was added to coffee to make it taste more like coffee from the Yemeni port, Mokha, but it's really something to experience! I will make sure I don't miss the coffee ceremony. 💖

Don’t let bad habits define you. Change even for the better is often uncomfortable at first.

All you motherfuckers says night owl… I’ll ruin you - that’s just A REGULAR OWL

In all my years I never really thought about how weird it is that only one type of bird flies around at night… until now
2
Potato1223 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Okay that’s a badass line, what’s it from?
2
catfink1664 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Just out of my head

Are you serious?

Yeah, why?

Because I love it and it’s amazing

i'm in the same boat lol, started drinking black coffee last month and now i'm weirdly productive before noon?? my roommate thinks i've been possessed but honestly i kinda like this new version of me.

Welcome to the dark side. Literally. Just wait until you start getting excited about buying a new sponge or a nice vacuum cleaner. The transformation into a functional adult is terrifying, but that 6 AM productivity hits different.

Being a morning person is not "normal." Humans have all kinds of internal clocks. Morning people, afternoon people, night people, etc. Just because our society is built around the average morning person doesn't mean your internal clock is wrong or abnormal. Yes, it can mean that you have to fight against your own natural rhythm if you have to get up earlier than you want to in order to get to work on time. But please don't think that "early" is the only thing that's normal!

Am I the only one supporting this lifestyle in this thread? Embrace it OP, drink lots of coffee, get up early and get shit done. You will get used to the taste, just don't add milk, because that's poison. Don't worry about your friends, they will have to accept that you are a new person now, that will get shit done before 10am, and they will secretly admire you for that. Wear black. Make new friends with people who are also up early. Enjoy the things only early birds will see, like a murder of crows taking apart a garbage bin or the efficiency of street cleaners before the everyday hustle. My comment may be a bit over the top at some points, but it's a good thing to maintain some sort of illusion of control over your life, it really helps. Also remember to eat a lot of veggies and spend as much time as you can outdoors. That's all I have to say.

Morning people unite! Nothing better than the 8.30am weekend shoppers, it’s so civilised and polite

Spock_Nipples Apr 2, 2026 +2
I dunno; I'm in my late 50s and look much younger. People ask me what I do. What I do is listen to and do what feels good for my body: not forcing myself to get up at first light, eating reasonably well, and basically doing things on my terms and no one else's as much as possible, which results in relatively low stress.

F_L_A_B Apr 2, 2026 +2
If your goal is to be a morning person, say goodbye to your old night owl self. In order to get something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.
2
Mikon_Youji Apr 3, 2026 +2
Just put milk or cream in it, man. C'mon.

Rusalka-rusalka Apr 2, 2026 +3

As someone who gulps dangerous amounts of black coffee, I would say skip the habit. The highs are great! It keeps you alert and you are happy. But after a point, it can cause dehydration and sort of a low after the high. Makes you depend on it even to fight mild drowsiness. Try developing a different habit instead. Do something refreshing as soon as you wake up..like a short jog.

Well, then OP would just be replacing caffeine with another addiction right? Would be counter productive imo.

same... switching to mornings feels so weird at first. the coffee sucks but your body kinda adjusts eventually
1
Cobra_Surprise Apr 2, 2026 +1
You can throw some half and half and sweetener in that bad boy and you'll still get all the caffeine. Perhaps it will sooth your friends' hearts

Urbit1981 Apr 2, 2026 +1
I work a different time zone so I don't have to do mornings. I occasionally chose to get up early to do things outside of my norm but only when I really want to mess with my schedule.
1
Deepcrater Apr 2, 2026 +1
Why black coffee? At least do cold brew it's not as bag but still just flavor your coffee or something. I get where you're coming from though I get about 5 hours of sleep on average every night and I can't image going to bed at 10just to get up early at 5. I feel like I've lost all the rest of my day but every morning I feel horrible, I just run off monster instead of coffee.

Swimming-Advice-6062 Apr 2, 2026 +1
kinda get this tbh. like it’s working but also feels off at the same timemaybe you dont need to go full morning mode, just find a version that still feels like you lol

Squeeze fresh lemon in a morning black helps control cortisol levels.

Why We Sleep is a great book that will totally validate your night owlness. Our sleep cycle is more genetic and it’s very hard if not impossible to change. It’s okay to not be a morning person! It’s socially kinda looked down upon, especially in the corporate world, but it’s actually very very normal.

I needed a clock reset so I set an alarm for 6:30AM everyday and popped a 100mg caffeine pill. Even if I stayed in bed, by 7AM I was fully awake and ready to go. Same thing, within 2 weeks my body started naturally waking me up between 6 and 7 and I needed less and less caffeine.

melonball6 Apr 2, 2026 +1
It sounds like you are punishing yourself by drinking something you don't like and getting up early. You don't have to drink black coffee if you get up early. Is there a reason you chose to do that? I personally got used to black coffee and I'm an early riser, but I choose to do both so it's not a punishment. And I still love a sweet latte on occasion if I'm out and about.

Apenas pegue sol como a primeira coisa que você faz de manhã. Tome o café depois. Mas sinceramente você nem vai precisando café.

Fly to Australia and have some proper coffee.

onion_cat Apr 2, 2026 +1
as me and my husband got older we naturally started just waking up earlier lol it could be black coffee tho bcause we drink a lot of it. But we did just sort of notice over time that it was easier to wake up and go to bed earlier
1
Stunning_Shirt8530 Apr 2, 2026 +1
black coffee is an acquired taste that you acquire by being too lazy to add anything and then one day you realize you actually prefer it this way. that's the whole journey

keepturning1 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Exercising in the morning too really helps to solidify the change. I’m naturally a night owl too, and part of that included exercise later in the day or evening, usually after work. But now I’m doing it earlier, often before work, and don’t need coffee to wake me up as the sleep is so restful.

Timely_Thing9878 Apr 2, 2026 +1
I take a caffeine pill = 1 cup coffee, each morning. No calories and quick absorption.
1
taytay10133 Apr 2, 2026 +1
What do you mean what at what cost? Having less sugar and living a healthier lifestyle? Sounds like your body is responding well, so I’m not entirely sure what the point of your question is. Unless you are only referring to  feeling as if you’ve lost your identity?

Go all in! Go to bed at 9!

Black coffee eventually is like drinking water. Liquid calories are the devil, stay strong in your quest to drink bitter dirt water every morning! (I started drinking black coffee after working at Dunkin made me hate sweeteners. I overdid it on coffee and now I just take it black)

If you make better coffee it won't taste like shit

Try frappes instead of a hot coffee, maybe even a mocha frappe or chocolate one. They're delicious

Trying to stick to a daytime routine for decades broke me. I ended up with runaway circadian rhythms which are unmanageable and switch for no reason. I literally had to become my own boss to make sure I can sleep when I'm sleepy and wake up when I wake up, which can be after 3, 6, 10 or 12 hours depending on what my RNG has decided. At least I'm not going insane anymore but it's hell. If anyone had been through that and has reliable tips I'm buying.

Phoenix__Wwrong Apr 2, 2026 +1
Black coffee didn't help me. I think the one that has the biggest effect is taking magnesium glycinate, which was something I saw on Listnook. But it took more than a year before I saw any change.

There’s good coffee out there! Try a light roast. Eventually work up to grinding your own beans. It actually tastes good. Dark roast pre-ground beans like Folgers is incinerated to death, that’s why it tastes like burnt disappointment.
1
shymenJESUS Apr 3, 2026 +1
Black coffee is the shit. Different beans taste different, not to mention you can have it fine or coarse and it also changes the flavor profile. If you have the right coffee for you chances are you'll like it. And after a while a coffee with milk just tastes awful and is way too sweet
1
AnAttempt-WasMade Apr 2, 2026 +1
Here’s the thing, people have a genetic clock for when they’ll feel tired and alert. Most people do best when they do/feel what matches theirs. This isn’t always possible, but why force yourself if you don’t have to? It doesn’t sound like you have a need for it other than the societal construct that early risers are better or more adult. If you want to do it and it’s working, that’s great! Just don’t feel like you have to
1
I_love-tacos Apr 2, 2026 +1
Leave the coffee, really. I used to drink up to 12 cups of coffee a day, even before going to sleep, first thing in the morning coffee just to be able to poop. One day I checked my blood pressure and was through the roof, the doctor recommended that I stop drinking coffee, I stopped one day from the next and my life improved significantly. I can go to sleep at regular hours, I can sleep whenever I am tired, my blood pressure is down again, I am not anxious all the time, I wake up feeling fresh and rested. I still drink 1 or 2 coffees at most a month, but now it is more for the taste of it and not as my junkie fix and always early in the morning because if not I won't be able to sleep properly.

If the coffee part sucks stop doing it. I like to wake up and chug down like 16 oz of water first thing.

Miserable_Mail_5741 Apr 2, 2026
Why do you need to be a morning person? If you need to be and stay awake in the mornings, like a job or classes, then fine, get your caffeine fix!  But if you don't have to be up and refreshed in the morning, don't force yourself.

Black coffee is gross, put some milk and sugar (or sweetener if you can't do sugar). Treat yourself with the love you deserve!
