Rewatching Season 1, the best parts of the Show were learning about the World of The Boys and the backstory of the Characters and their motivations. Not sure why they push the "Gruesome" angle so much for marketing. Either way, I've loved this series for 7 years, really hope Season 5 Sticks the landing.

I always took the "Gruesome" marketing to be the "THING" that marketing was looking for to differentiate it from everything else on the market at the time. A bit of "Here's why we're different from those other Superhero shows with evil corporations"

Is there anyone who watches the show because of the gore? I know people who stopped watching it because of it… I don’t mind it but most of the time it is totally pointless and adds nothing to the story.

I personally don't mind it as for the most part, and bear with me on this one, it makes "sense" in how it's used for the most part. But I can totally get how a person would be turned off by it.

I didn't have a problem with the gore and actually liked how dark and daring the show was until the octopus scene. I fast forwarded through it and finished the season but didn't come back for the next one. Guess I found my personal limit.

It's all about superheroes gone wrong, what do you mean that it doesn't add anything?

I think it adds a lot to the comedic elements if you don't mind it. I mean a shrinking man exploding inside another guy's p**** because he sneezed is completely fucked up but also hilarious

I disagree. It add to the realism that these people are walking weapons of mass destruction. It’s totally part of the story.

Did you read the comics? Or any of Garth Ennis' other work? The gore is as important to the identity of his comics and art style as the story itself.

And they don't even begin to really touch 1/100th of the gore and sexuality that the comics showed 🤣

New streaming needed to differentiate somehow and they needed their own ‘HBO’ show

Because at the time The Boys was first releasing, Marvel’s “clean,” “family-friendly” image was the dominating image of comic book properties, so to differentiate and gain some traction they pushed the adult, violent, gruesome angle and just stuck with it.

HBO always had the premium shows with TV-MA, stuff you couldn’t put on regular tv, and Amazon needed their own TV-MA product

The main thing I knew about the show before I started watching it was "exploding p****" so I think they leaned into the stuff that got people talking even if it was to register absolute horror
I'm super pumped for season 5, I'm just kinda in for the ride wherever it goes at this point

Well they couldn’t push the parody angle after real life got more absurd than the show

I’ve got this hunch that the extreme gore is kind of the point. Almost like they are trying to push the uncanny valley line to creep ever so much closer to appearing to be a “real” snuff film for the generation that grew up in the age of bloodless PG-13 horror.
Just look at stuff like “Faces Of Death” being turned from a gore compilation to a feature film about the people who have to sort through the real “Faces of Death”.
Almost like someone intends to use it as part of some propaganda program.
Perhaps THAT’s the real reason Elon had such a f****** boner for “X”.
Not any of the autistic shit he said about math and numbers or whatever. It’s so HE can be the one who controls all the “X” rated content.
Essentially making X the White House endorsed version of LiveLeak…where the “Real” News gets reported on. Or whatever edgelord ass slogan they would use.
They seem to have forgotten that some of us still remember Rotten and Ogrish.

It's because they wanted to be edgelords, can't do this on televesion mentality. Then it just got worse because sadly they wanted to just push a message rather than just telling astory, it's find to want to push a "message" if you can keep it entertaining but when they are trying to force 1:1 comparisons it just ruins the flow of the story because it's dusrupted by the director/writers wanting to be on their soapbox pushing their ideals on others rather than just being entertainers.

Yet another garth ennis property down the drain
It's really depressing how they decided to do away with all of the good character moments from the comic series that probably would've gotten the series an award (specifically the butcher baker and the candlestick maker mini series) in favor of glorified cut away gags, celeb cameos and the showrunners fixation on American political figures. Half the characters don't have a reason to even be their anymore.
Respect to both Karl Urban and Anthony Starr, they clearly try to emulate how their characters were written in the comic and made the effort to bring them to the screen
Edit: prove me wrong .
Tell me where there's significant character development that isn't dropped 3 eps later

Garth Ennis’ works can’t go down the drain, considering they already start off living in a sewage treatment plant. Edgy piles of edgelord teenage wankery that they are.

Where did the show do any of the characters better. If its truly wank as you say then you should have some good examples of how the show made the characters better
