I didn't realize that James Gunn got his start at Troma.

askyourmom469 19 hr ago +122
Yep! He also wrote and directed the incredible (and incredibly gross) horror comedy Slither. The dude definitely has a love and understanding for the genre, so I'm pretty optimistic that he really does mean that. If they get the tone right, a Clayface horror movie sounds like a slam dunk.

If anyone needs a recommendation for movies like Slither, check out Night of the Creeps by Fred Dekker.

Fred “The Monster Squad” Dekker!

and most stuff that mike flanagan works on is solid. I’m optimistic for it

Its a Mike Flanagan joint? Sold. He's probably the best living horror producer on the planet.
1
Ninjamurai-jack 8 hr ago +2
Yeah, he wrote it based on Batman TAS
2
The_Nerdy_Elephant 16 hr ago +6
Then we can do a musical for the sequel /s

Accomplished_Lab_675 14 hr ago +2
Oh such a good movie, and shit yeah just reading that headline had me thinking "oh hell yeah!"
2
Samanthacino 17 hr ago +5
I'm just hoping they didn't mangle Mike Flanagan's script (they have said they didn't, but you never know). Should turn out a banger if not.

James Gunn is not the type to be a diva as far as I can tell where it’s his way or the highway, and there’s also the specter of overinvolved anti creative suits dictating the creative direction of the DCU which I’m sure he wants to avoid, so I’m sure he respects flanagan’s vision especially given how talented Flanagan is in the horror genre which Gunn understands. This movie is going to have to be really really dark and terrifying for Creature Commandos to make sense though, so buckle up (when that show takes place in the context of the DCU, clayface is already an established serial killer).

Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder of Troma, director of Toxic Avenger and Tromeo & Juliet (which he co-wrote with Gunn) among others, appears in Guardians of the Galaxy in a background cameo in the prison scene! They're good friends. I think he's in Superman, too.
18
Applekid1259 18 hr ago +8
Tromeo and Juliet is a staple of the Tromaverse.

Just don't watch Poltrygeist especially if you need the washroom after taco bell. The washroom scene alone made me go yeah im not eating for a week LOL.

Good. Let the villain be a villain. He can be sympathetic, of course, but one of the main reasons the Sony spider-villain movies failed was that they tried to make them into badass anti-heroes or just straight up heroes.

andmac9518 19 hr ago +71
It’s not necessarily a villain movie either it’s a monster horror film like the fly and it’s his decent into becoming a monster but not by his own doing

This is what The Penguin got right imo. It didn’t pull any punches in depicting him as an absolutely vile monster… that final scene with his mom made me physically ill.

That final act of the series was incredible, right up to the batsignal

And that teaser was creepy as f***.

sussybakashinji 18 hr ago +48
This shows to me that Gunn understands DC. In the comics, the more “mature”, often horror, Vertigo properties shared a universe with Batman and Superman. Swamp Thing. Constantine. Sandman. And Batman’s rogue’s gallery is full of horror monsters. It’s Gods *and* Monsters.
48
Ninjamurai-jack 18 hr ago +18
A Swamp Thing movie is in the works, btw
18
Minimum-Web-6902 11 hr ago +2
God swamp thing and Solomon Grundy were some of my favorite adventures growing up. I love how he is essentially unkillable.
2
Mister_MxyzptIk 13 hr ago +1
F*** yeah
1
Nyorliest 13 hr ago +3
Yeah most Vertigo is not superheroes at all. Maybe that’s why it’s the only DC I really love.
3
Top-Sir-4238 10 hr ago +1
yeah and vertigo is also really seperated from the main dc stuff for the most part
1
Nyorliest 10 hr ago +1
Yeah I know. But, I mean, do you mean continuity-wise? Brand-wise?
1
Top-Sir-4238 9 hr ago +1
no, i mean like dc and vertigo were almost never connected. they were treated like two different things. vertigo characters like Morpheus didnt sharre universe with characters like Batman, Constatine didnt either for the most part, that only changed in like 2010s. Those two were treated as different things, its why vertigo writers got complete freedom to do anything they wanted
1
distantnemesis4 8 hr ago +3
aren’t martian man hunter and scarecrow in some of the earliest issues of sandman
3
Nyorliest 8 hr ago +2
I remember Scarecrow, definitely.
2
Nyorliest 8 hr ago +2
No, Batman was in the old Alan Moore Swamp Thing. I looked up the one I remember - and loved - and that was 1988. And there have been lots of crossovers. I am pretty sure Sandman was in a Batman annual, or maybe the other way around. But thematically, definitely. It was a different 'imprint', and especially back before the internet, people weren't as savvy about marketing, and you could have different brands treated very differently, even if really they were sitting in the same building using the same people. I used to love Vertigo, and not read much DC - I should say 'other DC', but I really didn't think of it that way, back then.
2
Top-Sir-4238 7 hr ago +1
i mean yeah and there are crossovers with marvel and trasformers that doesnt mean theyre happening in one thing. Its like counting Brubakers Criminal run as Marvel comic
1
Whiteguy1x 8 hr ago +1
No, the first issues have more connections to DC characters  and then they kinda go away.  That dr dream or whoever stole the dreamstone was a DC character, as was Martian manhunter. Theres other small connections in sandman, but it mostly stayed out of the typical DC stuff
1
Top-Sir-4238 8 hr ago +1
yes but they were explicitly different universes, like thats how vertigo was even marketed as, they used something to bring people to read it but the actual comic wasnt connected to anything
1
Whiteguy1x 7 hr ago +1
I honestly dont know enough about comics to get into the weeds of different multiverses. I do know that there are connections to DC properties sprinkled in, but it isn't particularly important to the overall plot, the Netflix adaptation even cut them all out.
1
Mrzz80 19 hr ago +34
I like that DC (unlike marvel) is happy to lean into the darker aspects of their characters. It’s much more entertaining than what at this point just amounts to corny and predictable superhero movies from marvel most of the time. There’s a reason the dark knight is so revered
34
SnowDay111 14 hr ago +7
The Penguin tv series was really dark as well
7
FreeRangeDice 11 hr ago -8
Where was the Penguin in all of it? It was more about gangster girl boss than Penguin. It’s the Witcher all over again.
-8
Exciting-Position716 10 hr ago +3
You definitely did not watch the series then if you didn't see the Penguin in all of it because there was a lot of Penguin doing Penguin things in it.  Hangman/Sofia Falcone has always been a villain in DC and how they adapted her to be a foil to The Penguin and his rise in the underworld was brilliant.  She was not a "gangster girl boss." She was a sympathetic psychopath who was driving everyone away from her progressively as the series went on until it all collapsed because she was outwitted, outsmarted and outmatched by Penguin's calculated machinations and the sheer corruptibility of those around her. She did not know how to fully play the game and it undid everything she tried to do because she really did think "respect" and "fear" is how one can rule the underworld of Gotham when in the end only money does. Money conquers all, it is as simple as that and Penguin knew how to make it lucrative for everyone involved to go jump ship to his side. Furthermore he knew that the only way to truly retain that power was through politics and going the political angle and corrupting them was the ultimate play in securing him taking control of Gotham's underworld.  He successfully manages to wrap everyone around his finger and cut loose every tie he has that could expose the extent of his crimes.  You should actually watch the show, it's fantastic.
3
diabeticmilf 17 hr ago +2
Well DC has always been much darker than Marvel but I agree that it’s a good change of pace
2
Ninjamurai-jack 16 hr ago +2
No, and even Zack Snyder recognized that. Marvel was the darker, grittier one in the comics, while DC was the happier and Brighter one.
2
chipscto 11 hr ago
Umm idk bout this one. Dc ushered in dark gritty comics with watchmen and dark knight returns. They were already headed there wit the neil batman run. Granted marvel had serious shit like tony addiction and death of gwen but that dark edge was born from DC. So much so that the common link is frank miller going on to pen the dark daredevil stuff. Dc was bright cuz of adam west; which would make them marvel of then.
0
Ninjamurai-jack 8 hr ago +2
DC wasn’t bright because of Adam West, it was bright because of the Golden/Silver Age, and Bronze wasn’t that different in the main universe Marvel had more adult themes at the time while DC wasn’t really defying the comic book code

hanky2 5 hr ago +1
Werewolf by Night was pretty cool although not particularly scary.
1
Nyorliest 13 hr ago +1
We don’t have to choose a side. We can like both when they’re good, and neither when they’re bad. Gunn Superman and Endgame, yay. Aquaman and Brave New World, nope nope nope.

Im so excited. There are two Batman baddies I’ve always wanted to see on the big screen. Clayface and Arnold Wesker.

Paramount better let James Gunn do his thing in peace

They compared it to Death Becomes Her and then call it a horror? Did they see Death Becomes Her?

I am really interested in how DC is building a credible Batman-less universe of Batman villains.

And here's to me hoping to see sum opera singing, and Shark bro with Harley quinzel. 😔

Cautious_Repair3503 11 hr ago +1
Sounds good, I'm kinda tired about how generic a lot of superhero movies are. Comics have been in a diversity of genres for ... Basically as long as they have existed, but for some reason our movies lag behind and are kinda stuck in a very formulaic groove. Sometimes they get close, like ant man was almost a heist movie. I hope this is a sign that comic book movie adaptations are finally maturing as a medium. I would love to see adaptations of more mature subject matter, like an eternity girl miniseries.

I clarify- then I will not be watching it.

1
Horror_Response_1991 18 hr ago +1
But when Batman?
1
Ninjamurai-jack 16 hr ago +4
Basically, the new DCU Batman movie is being written but they aren’t rushing it because of the The Batman Part 2 that is coming in 2027.
4
jrodfantastic 16 hr ago +1
Isn’t Clayface already dead in James Gunn’s new DCU?
1
Undefeated-Smiles 14 hr ago +5
There could be multiple of clayface in the universe similar to how they've done it in the comics before.
5
Johnny_Waffles85 13 hr ago +3
unsure but this movie takes place before Superman

WalphRiggum_ 14 hr ago +2

I mean, the teaser didnt remind me of a horror movie. Ill watch it due to it being different, but they could have had better luck of a horror movie with Victor Szasz or hell, even a horror version of Scarecrow.

do you have to have a lot of something to know you don't like it?
-2
Naulicus 15 hr ago
It’s just a silly complaint. There’s plenty of Batman media with Batman as the titular character. A few isolated projects focusing on other characters in his mythos is perfectly fine.

HunterDHunter 12 hr ago -1
This one is really bothering me. I have been thinking that Clayface is a villain that could finally be properly brought to the big screen. And the social commentary around such a villain is more poingant than ever. It should be based in modern times with social media. But without Batman, what's the point?
-1
RynoKaizen 19 hr ago -15
If it's not a hybrid don't piggy back on DC fame for your "horror movie".
-15
Nick_Arin 19 hr ago +11
What does that even mean. It’s just DC studios.

It means that the movie is produced by a company called DC studios and that they approached someone to create a horror movie with a specific character? One of the co-writers was a part of The Haunting of Hillhouse/Bly Manor, Hush, Doctor Sleep, Geralds Game. The director also has a history of horror movies (not great ones, but horror slop is still entertaining). They have a horror guy doing a horror movie, oh my god that’s so crazy.

Why not? Nothing says that comics have to be about superheros, and DC has a lot of content that is not necessarily about superheroes. Have you ever watched The Joker (first one) or The Penguin? They are amazing and arent really about superheroes.
10
FreeRangeDice 11 hr ago -1
Hilarious that you think those were amazing. Zero cinema history if you think those were amazing. I fell asleep watching both. Go watch more movies.

If this movie is good, and fleshes out the character decently, when we get him in Batman it’ll feel better to know how big of a threat the B man is fighting, imo.
