Japan raises tobacco, corporate taxes to finance boost in defense spending
Japan on Wednesday raised tobacco and corporate taxes to finance a boost in defense spending, with income tax hike set to follow in 2027 as the government projects the tax increases will add some 1.3 trillion yen ($8 billion) annually in revenue.

They will be restructuring their constitution to eliminate the JSDF and develop a full defense/offensive force.

It’s understandable. They’re facing threats that they know America can’t entirely be relied upon to help them deter. It’s been long enough and their attitudes have changed drastically since WWII. I say let them have offensive abilities for when the need arises, and hopefully it won’t.

I think they definitely need to replace US defensive capabilities with their own, but I hope they don’t get rid of the pacifist language in their constitution. They’re one of the most peaceful and least hated countries (aside from old WW2 scars). I’d hate to see them return to an imperialist mindset.

I would argue that the prolonged presence of US military in Japan and the huge boost of unwanted rude tourists (read: influencers) is going to push the nicest kid in the class to crash out on everyone. Small towns and small businesses are going out of business. Property is being bought up by foreigners and the country incentivizes this because the birthrate being low means there's a lot of property going unused. This also means a lot of rural areas are essentially ghost towns. Japan is not a country that makes it a habit to cry in front of the world when they are frustrated. Japanese business owners are extremely kind and they try to be understanding. But one day the cost of all this social media-driven c*** is going to go too far. All for a f****** TikTok video.

Japan is just as ugly as the rest of the world

What does this mean exactly?

means they do the same stuff other countries take hits for yet seem to get a pass.

cant help fan bois think japan is disney world, Their immigration policy is worse then the states, their society can be sorta ugly yet its spun like its their culture so its okay, it wasnt to long ago assassination was political norm, they also have a way of ignoring things conviently because they dont have a word or saying for it. It sounds like I hate Japan but I dont, I just dont have a reason to ignore the darker side like a lot of people do.

I unironically will identify as a weeb but I absolutely will never want to live there. There's so much about Japanese society that I wouldn't say is wrong since that's imposing my norms, but is definitely very unsettling. And this is talked about a lot in their media, anime in particular, that actually covers daily life there. There's a lot to love about Japan. I've visited a couple of times and it's an absolutely beautiful country with an extremely deep and rich culture. But my god the ills in their society feel so much like putting perfume on a trash bin.

I’ve started calling out weebs for being weird if they start basically going “west bad, Japan good”, if you’re not Japanese, you’re an outsider and will always be one there for the foreseeable future. There’s a lot of bs happening in my county, but it isn’t going to be f****** better there, or in many places in Asia. Those weebs can’t appreciate their home or at least side of the globe for whatever reason.

Yeah, I know they have a lot of bad internal issues. Certainly not a fanboy for them. I’m specifically talking about their foreign policy and relationships with other nations.

Initial-Lead-2814 Apr 1, 2026 +2
I find it weird that only Japan gets a pass in the world or at least the States. Every other nation will have negatives mentioned, always seems mum when it comes to em though. They have the immigration policy a lot want in the States, yet we're the Baddies when it comes to immigration. You see it with the Middle East a little but place like Dubai have pr on lockdown or are trying to become like Japan in that regard

DGMW they’re very xenophobic/racist, have an oppressive work culture, and are misogynistic, at least compared to western standards. They also haven’t properly apologized and atoned for the war crimes they committed during WW2 and their imperial days. But being a pacifist nation is a good thing for everyone, and helps them maintain good relations with most countries (aside from China and N Korea).

Initial-Lead-2814 Apr 1, 2026 +1
The Pacifist aspect is one of the things I like. The States wrote that Constitution didn't they after the war? When you dont spend on military its crazy what you can achieve elsewhere.

Lol what are they gonna do - fill the spots with Vietnamese and Filipino trainee interns? Young, fit Japanese kids don't even want to work low paid baito jobs, let alone shit paid military work that puts them in danger and takes away their freedom in day-to-day life.

Making the work not shit-paid would be a good start. And sure, bringing over some young men from SEA and offering permanent residency and/or citizenship in exchange for military service and integrating into Japanese society shouldn't be off the table.

There has to be a trade off somewhere. Can't expect hordes of ethnically Japanese able-bodied young men interested in military service to drop out of the sky. Conscription has its major downsides, but it's also an option, I guess. As is going for more automatization wherever it's possible.

Have they tried lowering corporate taxes so it trickles down and creates more revenue? Works every time.

WTF is this black magic? As American, am I actually to believe they’re not cutting health care to do it?
23
Infinite_throwaway_1 Apr 1, 2026 +5
Our military budget isn't why we don't have healthcare. America spends more per capital on healthcare than anyone else. We just suck at spending it efficiently.
5
deviltrombone Apr 1, 2026 +3
I was thinking about the reporting the last couple of days that the *Republicans* were planning to finance the $200 billion war request by cutting healthcare once again. Also, if you think cutting healthcare and increasing other spending including military (and giving tax cuts to the rich) shouldn't be considered related, I guess you might be applying *Republican* logic.
3
Infinite_throwaway_1 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Republican logic is why our healthcare budget doesn't affectively deliver healthcare. Refusing to price check costs. Refusing to pay for a c**** doctor visit which forces people to use outrageously expensive emergency room visits. Preventing single payer, which creates expensive and useless middle men. Starting wars that create injured soldiers. We could have both a good military and healthcare if we did it right.
1
deviltrombone Apr 1, 2026 +1
I agree with that. 👍

logicalpiranha Apr 1, 2026 +11
In an alternate universe, the US does this to boost healthcare spending.

America: let’s cut healthcare to fund the war we started. Japan: let’s tax big tobacco to keep our defenses ready just in case cause the world is spicy.

Raising corporate taxes what a novel idea
4
Nerevarine91 Apr 1, 2026 +1
On the one hand, I think it’s an understandable goal and a good way to fund it. On the other hand, sure am glad I gave up smoking. My paycheck’s low enough as it is

instead of that i would rather force all tabaco corps to have a profit cap. raising corp tax just means raise product price.
1
d_wib Apr 1, 2026 +13
In my opinion raising product price hopefully decreases the number of users which would then save tons of healthcare costs. I know that’s not super helpful for people already addicted to Nicotine but would hopefully help deter people from starting.

Aether_rite Apr 1, 2026 -4
one is "may" reduce new user, the other is "guarantee" harming current user.

RandomPantsAppear Apr 1, 2026 +3
Introducing a profit cap is most likely to just increase foreign imports - there’s no incentive for local tobacco to expand market control past a certain point, and you can’t cap the profit by foreign companies.  You would also *possibly* see cleaner subdivisions of national businesses to slide under the profit cap - so basically regional subsidiaries.  Neither of these things would increase government revenue.  If you’re trying to maximize revenue to the government, this is the only way.

Not necessarily. They eventually price themselves out. There’s plenty of methods of nicotine delivery nowadays so there’s more competition. One could also argue that on a global scale, corporate taxes are too low. Most corporations grow by consumption as opposed to expansion. Meaning they buy up competitors instead of building new stores. They have too much profit. Meanwhile most corporations are paying their employees the bare minimum, because the easiest expense to cut is labor and payroll. You just push the remaining people to work harder or get fired too. If corporate taxes were raised they would be incentivized to use money in pre-tax avenues to avoid the extra loss. This means more investment into labor and capital. Back when every company had pension plans for their employees and there was tons of competition, the corporate tax was effectively 50% or higher. Now it’s in the low 20s. There’s a reason a grocery store employee could afford to be the sole earner in the 50s, more or the profit was divided. Now it’s kept up top.
