The GSDF soldiers on Monday became the first 'combat-capable' Japanese troops to train in the Southeast Asian country since the end of World War II.

No this is an annual multinational military exercise that’s been happening for many years. Japan is actively participating this year for the first time

Probably as a response to increased Chinese military presence and build up in the south China sea and the strait of Taiwan. These drills seem designed for the climate/terrain of fighting against China, as there isnt another nation in that region that would actively threaten them with war otherwise.

Hardly the first time Japanese troops were in the Philippines, just ask MacArthur. It fits well with German tanks rolling through Ukraine again. Anyone seen Italy lately?
