Protesters once again took to the streets across the nation on April 19 to rally against the government's intent to amend the Constitution's pacifist clause, with tens of thousands gathering outside of the Diet building in Tokyo.

Conversely, the primary reason the US dislikes Article 9 is because it weakens Japanese deterrence against China, which currently has claims on the Senkaku Islands near Ishigaki, seeks to invade neighboring Taiwan, and has made insinuations towards Okinawa.  For reference, China is currently building an expanded carrier fleet, hundreds of steath fighters, and hundreds of new nuclear weapons. They would like to see Japan’s JSDF remain limited.

Ironic because the US is the one that wrote the pacifism provision into the Japanese constitution

The US hates the Japanese constitution because it makes it difficult to use the Japan Self-Defense Forces for US invasions.  We protest Armitage’s remarks treating Article 9 of the Constitution as a hindrance https://www.jlaf.jp/old/seimei/2004/sei_20040805.html

Why are most of the signs in English? At least the ones near the camera, who the f*** does that organically in a "nationwide Japanese protest", a country where English proficiency is pretty low, that's interesting don't you think. Edit: Especially because OP only seems to post English news in the context of US-Japan criticism on the topics of remilitarization, constitutional changes, and US-Japan relations, routinely utilizing sources like CGTN, and Global Times which are state run Chinese media outlets. So what's your game here Chinese bot?

That's common in protests in Japan. I saw it all the time while living there. The protests aren't just for a domestic audience. They're also trying to make a statement to the world that they are pacifist

That is nice and all, but I wonder how many of them voted for Takaishi in the first place?

Japanese parliamentary system means voters don't directly vote for leaders
