Jason Alexander (George Costanza) was under 40 for the entire run of Seinfeld. He was 29 when the show premiered.

That's all, I just found that information fascinating

Not to mention he was a short, chubby balding man who lived with his parents and still managed to land women who were 9s and 10s.

He had the kavorka.

There's an episode in the first season where George briefly turns his life around, starts dressing better, gains confidence. He drops all the Seinfeld affectations and exaggerated vocal cadences, and speaks in a lower, more sophisticated, almost s*** voice. INSTANT transformation. George looks like a prematurely aging loser because George IS a prematurely aging loser, but it's all context: the minute Jason Alexander starts carrying himself like he's large and in charge, instead of like Larry David, even without changing his hair or his build he feels like a totally different person. It's a weird mix of where "acting" meets "class."

You ever hear the man sing? He's got the voice of an angel **edit**: for those who haven't heard him sing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZjDX3R5Lgg

Well he was the cast member who came in with the most accolades. That's why he lit up LD over the travel episode he didn't appear in and that never happen again

sgarn Mar 28, 2026 +7
> You ever hear the man sing? Ironically the first song that might spring to mind for Seinfeld fans (the answering machine message) was very difficult for him as a trained singer. It wasn't just supposed to be dreadful singing, but identifiably George and Jason kept singing in a neutral accent as he was trained to do. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2013/4/5/15-q-jason-alexander/

>where George briefly turns his life around **George:** Yeah. No, wait a minute, I always have tuna on toast. Nothing's ever worked out for me with tuna on toast. I want the complete opposite of tuna on toast. Chicken salad, on rye, untoasted ... and a cup of tea.

It was the 90s. Having a well paying job that sounded good had a lot more influence back then. No social media, right? So knowing a guy who works at the Yankees was a lot bigger.
29
Schnutzel Mar 27, 2026 +42
Once he got a job at the Yankees he no longer lived with his parents. In fact he got the Yankees job by approaching a woman with "hi, I'm George, I'm unemployed and I live with my parents."

I wasn't short and stocky, but when I lived with my parents in the basement during a divorce at 33, I did better with the ladies than any other point in my life. Many women like a project.

As a guy who's been shaving his hair off since he was 22, it can also have the opposite effect since no one ever sees grey hair.

Yeah but grey hair is cool
45
Ssshizzzzziit Mar 27, 2026 +16
No hate there. I agree. Don't get me wrong, I'm envious of those who have it, I'm just saying there are advantages to going bald if you are afflicted with a bald patch.

Once you get to 45 or so and most guys are somewhat balding yes it can. But under it can add 10 years easily.
8
Sethicles2 Mar 27, 2026 +9
Grey > balding By a large margin
9
Ssshizzzzziit Mar 27, 2026 +5
I mean, if you have a good head of hair and it goes grey, God bless. I, and quite a few like me, don't have the option. I don't think either is better or worse, it's just a personal preference and there are advantages to shaving your head. There's definitely a lot of disadvantages too.
5
Frisnfruitig Mar 27, 2026 +37
It can, but usually doesn't.
37
BoxOfNothing Mar 27, 2026 +51
If you fully shave your head it's not unusual to look a bit younger or older than before you shaved, depending on the severity of your balding (check /r/bald, so, so many examples of people looking 10x better and several years younger), but one thing that being fully bald does do is stop you aging as fast. If all else is the same. No thinning, balding, greying, change in hairstyle to go in or out of fashion. So many bald people look basically the same for a long, long time.
51
BrosesMalone Mar 27, 2026 +23

BoxOfNothing Mar 27, 2026 +10

10
_Verumex_ Mar 27, 2026 +16
Is no one here aware of Patrick Stewart?
16
BoxOfNothing Mar 27, 2026 +15
Yeah exactly. I was going to use him, and even Jason Statham as examples, but I didn't want to focus solely on celebrities because people tend to resort to "well if you can afford all their procedures and be rich then yeah". Even though I've seen it plenty with normal people.
15
FoxyBastard Mar 27, 2026 +5
> well if you can afford all their procedures and be rich then yeah Yup. People always say this but, if it was true, wouldn't, like, over 90% of celebrities and rich people be ageless, instead of the handful that are always mentioned. I'm poor as shit, have had no work/procedures done, drink too much, smoked for 20ish years, vaped for the last 10, and, at 45, people think I'm maybe late 20s. One of my best friends never smoked/vaped or drank and looked 35 at 20. Sure, certain things can help, but genetics plays a big hand in it, I feel.
5
ex_oh_ex_oh Mar 27, 2026 +11
I don't know why you're stating this as some sort of fact when my own eyes have seen loads of people on /r/bald looking so much younger when they shave their heads. E: sort by top, month or year and it's in your face how youthful people get when they shave off their whispy hair
11
Ssshizzzzziit Mar 27, 2026 +8
Again, that hasn't been my experience. I didn't say balding, but if you shave your head it's difficult to get a read on exactly how old you are. Guys like Patrick Stewart ran like this forever, and it's only been the last ten years that he's started to look elderly. To me anyway.
8
Freyzi Mar 27, 2026 +13
And then ironically shaving it all off makes you younger as gets proven on r/bald every day.
13
Jepordee Mar 27, 2026 +16
Every single person on that sub has amazing facial hair tho lol
16
Chad_Broski_2 Mar 27, 2026 +7
Yeah I'm 30 and I look exactly like George but with more gray hairs. I think Hollywood has just fried people's brains into thinking that people always look a lot younger than they should
7
rayword45 Mar 27, 2026 +12
My friends mostly range from mid 20s to late 30s and I think literally every single one of them looks younger than George, including the ones who are bald...
12
safetydance Mar 27, 2026 +473
Yeah this kind of things always fascinates me. James Gandolfini was like 37 during the Sopranos pilot and 38 during the first season. I would have never guessed that, he looked like a 47-48 year old man.
473
Grooviemann1 Mar 27, 2026 +118
I'm 48. My hair is 95% silver and I still look younger than Gandolfini did at that time.
118
safetydance Mar 27, 2026 +51
Haha it’s wild. The **oldest** he was during the run of the show was like 45. He was never over 50 in the show, but if you told me he was 50 during the first season I wouldn’t have questioned it. I’m almost 44, and maybe I’m delusional, but I feel like I could have played his older adult son during the later seasons and it would have been passable.
51
poindexter1985 Mar 27, 2026 +25
It's been noted all over these comments that the receding hairline contributes to looking older, and that was a factor with Gandolfini. His weight also visibly aged him. James Gandolfini was not a healthy man living a healthy lifestyle. He was overweight, struggled with alcoholism (including binge drinking that created production problems), and other substance addictions. He was also a smoker. Gandolfini died of a heart attack at 51 years old. I can't think of many actors that I'd have more expectation that they'd look older than they actually are.
25
RockerElvis Mar 27, 2026 +54
Wilford Brimley was 49 when he played a retiree in Cocoon.
54
Somnambulist815 Mar 27, 2026 +19
He needed the cocoon more than anybody else
19
poindexter1985 Mar 27, 2026 +14
That one picture of Brimley in Cocoon is always used in side by side comparisons with actors that look perpetually young, but context really matters. Yes, Wilford Brimley always looked kind of old, but he was intentionally aged up with stage makeup for Cocoon. He didn't actually look *that* old at 49 years old.
14
RockerElvis Mar 27, 2026 +9
While that is true, he was already playing old guys before then. He wasn’t an unknown. Side note: around that time, he hit on a friend of mine (college age). She had noooo interest.
9
ObviousAnswerGuy Mar 27, 2026 +5
In the early 00's we had Mr Belding from Saved by the Bell come to my college for a talk/appearance. That night I see him out at the bars with a sorority girl on each arm. He was over 50 at the time.

I think the outfits were her choice. She didn't want to be the s*** woman trope, just one of the guys.

I think Jerry and Elaine looked their age, considering the early 90s clothes and hair. But George had that not old not young look of someone who's balding a lot and who's larger, especially with these clothes.

16
istasber Mar 27, 2026 +10
I think it's because fashion and hair styles changed dramatically in 90s. Its the "pictures of high schoolers in the 60s look like they are pushing 40" effect.

Compare this to something like The Office where you can actually see the cast aging in real time across nine seasons. Seinfeld ran for almost as long and nobody aged a single day on that show. George looked exactly as tired and defeated in season one as he did in season nine.

Eh, can't really agree on George specifically. There's an episode in season 3 where they reshot a few scenes years later, to replace George's dad's original actor with Jerry Stiller. In the re-shot scenes, George looks waaaaay different.

Jerry noticably aged.

Growing up I used to think this was crazy. As a now bald, 28 year old man, yea I can see that

Mr_1990s Mar 27, 2026 +66
It’s the adult male version of the teen movie girl. Glasses and bald are the 30 year old man’s glasses, ponytail and paint on overalls.

Look at her! She’s got paint on her overalls!

Or Patrick Stewart’s actual age during TNG.

DYMongoose Mar 27, 2026 +3
Patrick Stewart was, is, and always will be exactly 54 years old.

Shivathewriter Mar 27, 2026 +11
He looks younger today than he ever did on Seinfeld

dl064 Mar 27, 2026 +6
there was a guy at my old gym, who I didn't see for 10 years (say 2005 to 2015). He looked *literally younger* in 2015 because he'd gotten serious about it. 10k three times a week versus, whatever a couple of gentle bike rides. Like, he didn't look like he'd 'aged well over ten years' - he *literally looked younger*.

Let me tell you, Jerry. This whole thing of looking older than I am is working out great for me. Hoo Boy, this is going to be the Summer of George.

His character wasn’t in their 40s either.

They are all so much younger at the start than I feel like they should be. Probably because I was so much younger when the show was on so I always see them as being “older.” I think the same about the Friends actors. There’s a picture with the Cheers cast from season 1 showing their ages and it’s probably the biggest shock. I think Cliff was 35? Edit to add link to the picture: [https://www.listnook.com/r/80s/s/giFI9JgClk](https://www.listnook.com/r/80s/s/giFI9JgClk)

All the Cheers cast ages definitely shocked me. Cliff was 35 at the start? And Norm in his 30s too? And Coach, only 58. I didn't realize the actor was so young. Such a tragedy, he was hilarious and seemed to be well liked in real life too.

Believe it or not George isn't that old

How George pulled so many women over the course of the show is mind boggling! It's not like he has a sparkling personality or anything.

It's amazing to think that adults 20 to 30 years ago were our age at the time. Imagine what we could have accomplished if we had gotten the chance to be adults.

winelover08816 Mar 27, 2026 +5
A lot of you are older than The Golden Girls when they started their run. People just looked a lot older back then and/or didn’t eat enough preservatives to keep everything….um…preserved.
5
Mandalore108 Mar 27, 2026 +4
Yep, and he looked over 40 for the entire run.
4
Starkville Mar 27, 2026 +7
Some people just look older. He probably looked 40 when he was 16. Doesn’t matter. His commercials for Mike’s Amazing make me LOL every time.

swiggs313 Mar 27, 2026 +7
It’s like watching people react to the new Harry Potter trailer for HBO. “Why does Petunia and Vernon look so old!? They’re supposed to be in their thirties!” Yeah, it takes place in the early 90s. That’s what 90s thirties looked like.

ertebolle Mar 27, 2026 +3
He played the grizzled producer character Joe in the original Broadway cast of “Merrily We Roll Along” at age 22.
3
OreoSpeedwaggon Mar 27, 2026 +3
If you think that's wild, John Amos was under 40 years old for the entire run of "Good Times," just 12 years older than Jimmy Walker, who played his son, and Esther Rolle was in her 50s when she played his wife.

sofassa Mar 27, 2026 +3
And he already had won a Tony by then (Best Actor in a Musical 1989)
3
aresef Mar 27, 2026 +3
He looked so much younger *after* the show aired.

devospice Mar 27, 2026 +3
Look up the ages of people on shows in the 70s and 80s. It's jarring.
3
CHERNO-B1LL Mar 28, 2026 +3
This is why I have imposter syndrome. I'm still waiting to look like the grown ups on TV in the 80s and 90s. I'm 40 and still look younger than Costanza. Teenagers in high school comedies looked like men. Some celebs were seemingly old for their entire careers.

Few_Highlight1114 Mar 27, 2026 +2
OP is just learning that some men begin balding in their teens lol

amawg9 Mar 27, 2026 +2
He really lost a lot of hair.
2
Brainwheeze Mar 27, 2026 +2
Him being in his 30s isn't that hard to believe. His face during the run of the show doesn't look like that of a middle-aged man, it's just the hair and clothing.
2
Hands0meR0b Mar 27, 2026 +2
I am 42 and I still say they're all older than me when I watch the reruns and no one can tell me otherwise
2
annpann Mar 27, 2026 +2
No, he was 40 for the entire run of the series. I don't know how, but that's what happened 🤷🏼‍♀️

WintersDoomsday Mar 27, 2026 +2
The horseshoe makes everyone look older. If he had hair or was bald he’d have looked younger.
2
No-Juggernaut8847 Mar 27, 2026 +2
As someone who started losing his hair at 19, I understand. Glad he was the kind of person that didn't feel that would hold him back and became a great actor.

Seinfeld started in 1989?!?!

b_beck614 Mar 27, 2026 +2
I saw a post that showed a modern styled George with a complexly shaved head and a beard, and he looked so much younger. Rocking a shaved head wasn’t as “cool” in the early 90s, and the receding hairline really didn’t do him any favors. He was still the man though!
