This dude converted to Catholicism just to further a conservative scheme to promote a schism within the American Catholic community. JD Vance wants all Catholics to vote in lockstep with evangelicals. He also thinks he’s smarter and holier than the pope. It’s disgusting.

I would have been impressed if instead of Catholicism, he followed his wife’s traditional religion. If Vance had gone Hindu, I might of thought he was a stand up guy.

ball_fondlers Apr 2, 2026 +30
I’m non-Hindu Indian - if he converted to Hinduism, that would be MUCH more terrifying than converting to fake Catholicism.

Why?

agrarian_miner Apr 3, 2026 +15
I am not sure if this is what ball_fondlers was saying, but I do find the prospect of American right-wingers adopting a westernized version of Hinduism quite terrifying. From a Western perspective, conservative Hindu's might seem quite mild compared to conservative Christians or Muslims. They don't have a history of converting people by the sword, and they don't seem to care what non-Hindus do outside of South Asia. That being said, you don't have to twist Hinduism a lot to make it the ideal religion to promote just-world-theology - a conservatives' favorite world view. Even with the Book of Job (the book the prosperity people roleplay in their heads all the time), Evangelical Christians really have to twist the bible to make God love billionaires and despise the poor. In Hinduism, though, caste and karma-driven reincarnation are right there for adaptation into an American framework.

CcryMeARiver Apr 2, 2026 +6
BJP would break into US domestic politics bigtime. Way scarier than happyclappy catholicism.
6
ball_fondlers Apr 3, 2026 +5
It’s pretty complicated, but for the most part, Hindus don’t really recognize conversion, nor do they try to proselytize - the only way most Hindus will recognize you as Hindu is if you’re born into a Hindu family (and the associated caste). As a result, the only Hindu group who tries to do conversions is the far-right Hindu nationalists, but not in a “we have an ideology we want to spread” way - no, they just want Indian Muslims and Christians back at the bottom levels of the caste system. As for how this ties into Vance - Vance’s favorite philosopher is a guy named Curtis Yarvin, who is a weird far-right technomonarchist who self-describes as having a Brahmin (the highest caste in Hinduism) upbringing, despite not being Indian. I don’t believe for a second that Vance would convert to Hinduism because he liked the mythology or philosophy - no, it would 100% be because he likes the idea of an American caste system.

Interesting. He has said some Americans are more Americans than others;  “I think the people whose ancestors fought in the Civil War have a hell of a lot more claim over America than the people who say they don’t belong,”
1
Donny_Do_Nothing Apr 3, 2026 +1
> the people whose ancestors fought in the Civil War Surely he means both sides of that war, right? Right?

He'd still be John Donald Pants.  There is nothing he could do to whitewash the fact that he is cucked by 2 billionaires at once (Trump Theile)

Shows that he doesn't understand Catholic culture. Modern Catholics generally aren't that fervent. In fact, many are culturally Catholic and live mostly secular lives.  He also misunderstands how the structure of modern Catholicism does not lend itself well to fanaticism. Confession and atonement allows for anyone to be forgiven for sins. This is different from Calvanist philosophy that God has predetermined who is good or bad. Thus eliminating the need to prove you are "good". Catholicism is also a top down religion in which one is supposed to follow rules and the clergy. The Pope is the guide for God's will. Very different from Protestsntism which emphasizes an individual relationship with scripture rather than the clergy having authority over scripture interpretation.  Basically, Catholics don't give a f*** if someone happens to be Catholic. It's not going to create the schism he thinks

static-klingon Apr 2, 2026 +52
There are bishops and archbishops who are guilty of furthering this schism too. Luckily the pope has replaced a lot of them in America recently.
52
Hairy_Mycologist_945 Apr 2, 2026 +17
Yup, the USCCB got quite radical and has been somewhat brought to heel by Francis and Leo, but there are still several bishops who are very prominent in US Catholic media, and a significant minority movement led by them, that are basically in revolt and schismatic. A lot of them are really more closely aligned to SSPX and other traditionalist movements than the Church itself these days. A lot of the anti-Vatican II types got better organized this past quarter century and congealed into groups of radical dipshits, much like many other types of groups of radical dipshits did.
17
flea1400 Apr 2, 2026 +5
FYI. If this is true I find the bishop in question a bit wackadoodle. https://www.thelettersfromleo.com/p/you-rose-up-leaked-video-shows-bishop
5
S0LO_Bot Apr 2, 2026 +3
I can’t be quite sure but it’s very possible. There are a few wack bishops in the U.S. There used to be one bishop (an administrative bishop though) that advocated for January 6. He got excommunicated though lol
3
AlcibiadesTheCat Apr 2, 2026 +4
If the Pope excommunicates JD Vance, I'll convert back.
4
Okonos Apr 2, 2026 +14
> Modern Catholics generally aren't that fervent. In fact, many are culturally Catholic and live mostly secular lives.  Converts like him are a different breed.
14
d3ssp3rado Apr 2, 2026 +4
Religious converts in general tend to be much more fanatic regardless of the actual faith.
4
backstageninja Apr 2, 2026 +2
Also Catholics don't go gaga over converts like Evangelicals do (in my Northeastern US experience). They welcome converts sure, but if you weren't raised catholic you are often looked down on at least a little by a lot of the old school catholics
2
konacoffie Apr 2, 2026 +6
Why compare it with Calvinism? Most Protestants in the US are not Calvinists.
6
honkeycorn Apr 2, 2026 +37
Actually, most evangelicals are Calvinists but don’t understand that they’re Calvinists. You can hear it in their talk about God being “sovereign” and their extreme focus on grace. They don’t know what Calvinism is and can’t tell you any of its tenants, but their theology is deeply shaped by Reform theology.
37
TooManyDraculas Apr 2, 2026 +11
I mean you can see it in their history. Most Evangelical denominations are offshoots of major American denominations in the Reformed umbrella. And Reform/Calvinist theology was the original baseline Evangelicalism grew out of.

lennybriscoforthewin Apr 2, 2026 +7
Him and Newt Gingrich- two disgraceful examples of Catholic converts.
7
static-klingon Apr 2, 2026 +7
Early 2000’s I graduated from a fairly affluent private liberal arts college - pretty much a feeder into Ivy League grad schools. A lot of the conservative men converted to Catholicism during their senior year. It was kind of bizarre, and I didn’t understand it at the time.

83
Mrs_SmithG2W Apr 2, 2026 +13
Not to mention pedophiles are found in every human group, religious, school affiliated, sports, medicine etc., etc., etc. Judge the individual first, then the organization if it chooses to protect the powerful over the vulnerable.
13
HeinousWalrus Apr 2, 2026 +89
*Catholic clergy. There’s a lot of Catholics out there, and it’s unfair to lump a billion in there as pedos. A lot of them are/were victims rather than perpetrators, but the upper echelon of the church sure seem to be aware and have done their part in cover ups etc
89
Basic_Yam_715 Apr 2, 2026 +39
It is fair, I was Catholic. I stopped supporting the church completely after so many stories of SA and the cover-ups. I don't support pedophilia and certainly won't bring my kids around it.
39
captcha_trampstamp Apr 2, 2026 +6
I used to work in insurance. Did you know churches often need to have an entirely separate policy JUST to cover child SA by clergy/church leaders?
6
HeinousWalrus Apr 2, 2026 +15
Hey fair point - I ditched when I learned about the abuse. But I was about 16 and was fairly devout until my early teens. Catholic confirmation is why I started to quiet quit though (13 or so). I don’t like being told how to speak and there are so many hypocrite bullies in the system. It wasn’t until Sinead O’Connor ripped up the picture of the pope that things started to become more apparent on a larger scale of the pedophilia, and even that was met with dismay. Now we get to look back at residential schools and collectively say ‘f***’. The writing was on the wall. There are over a billion Catholics. I guarantee massive numbers are raised with no knowledge of rampant abuse or are oppressed by it, and that’s on the clergy. I don’t blame someone for not knowing better if they don’t know the facts.
15
Athena_Pegasus Apr 2, 2026 +22
Catholics who donate their money to the organisation with leaders who continue to abuse their power over vulnerable populations? Catholics who defend a racket of moral extortion? I'm just trying to understand who were talking about here. Correct me if I'm wrong.
22
shorugoru9 Apr 2, 2026 +6
If you raise these points with devout Catholics, they will tell you that's nothing, you should check out the medieval Catholic Church. The Church once was under the influence of the [Borgia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Borgias_\(2011_TV_series\)) family, which is akin to being run by the Mafia (good miniseries, too). But to a devout Catholic, all of this is to be expected, because the church is run by humans. What matters to devout Catholics is that Jesus created the Catholic Church to administer the sacraments. So, in essence, they have to put up with the human institution of the Church, because only the Catholic Church can administer the Eucharist.
6
JQuilty Apr 2, 2026 +4
The Borgias weren't any better or worse than the other popes of the era, they just lost a power struggle.
4
HeinousWalrus Apr 2, 2026 +9
The exact people to not support. I was a devout Catholic until about 12 or 13 and bounced complete by about 15 or 16. Catholics aren’t the only ones raping children and destroying indigenous cultures though, are they? I’m not defending anyone here, but coaches, police, teachers, extended family (basically anyone who can influence and intimidate young people and the working class) can and are guilty of these crimes as well. It’s a multi- and non-denominational disease of society and pretending it’s just the Catholics is a terrible take.
9
roastbeeftacohat Apr 2, 2026 +2
if you feel god in church, you can't exactly turn your back on that church for being shitty; a religious person does not get to choose how they feel god. I'm an atheist, but I understand religion is outside the purview of reason. Reason is one way to explore one's relationship with god, but if you feel it another way you can't just switch because you want to.
2
Bobambu Apr 2, 2026 +6
Nah. People are old enough to make hard choices.
6
ObjectOrientedBlob Apr 2, 2026 +6
It is not unfair, because they still support the church knowing how much harm it has done to the world.
6
HeinousWalrus Apr 2, 2026 +8
I was raised in that system, even went to school until grade 11 in the Catholic school system. Small town, few options. Got out when I could, but most peeps just care about what’s in front of them, especially in small communities. You learn about these abuses and then you decide what’s next. I didn’t choose at 8 to be Catholic, I chose at 16 to stop.
8
ObjectOrientedBlob Apr 2, 2026 +8
I don't blame children. But I do blame adults for being catholics..
8
HeinousWalrus Apr 2, 2026 +3
Same. Especially the ones who know what’s going on and can change what’s happening and choose not to.
3
Long_arm_of_the_law Apr 2, 2026 +9
Your children are more likely to be abused by school staff than Catholic priests.
9
bungpeice Apr 2, 2026 +4
The difference is there isn't a massive system to protect those abusers from justice. Source that stat for me please. I want to see how it was derived.
4
Environmental-Car481 Apr 2, 2026 +5
The Catholic Church has for the most part opted to own up to the problems of the past and have taken many precautions to be better. The Epstein class however follows the lie and deny route without ever seeing their problems or even trying to do better.

Can you be catholic when 2 popes denounce you and you kill one of them?
267
SidewaysFancyPrance Apr 2, 2026 +55
Yeah this is the biggest surprise of the day, I am amazed he's Catholic because of the derision towards Catholics in MAGA, hatred of the Pope and open flaunting of his teachings, and the Evangelical death grip that seems to be steering them (and Evangelicals hate hate *hate* Catholics). I suppose there's an outside chance it's all performative.
55
testamoderaway Apr 2, 2026 +41
He's of the sect that's basically just evangelicals in fancier hats. His entire religious identity is defined in protest of the catholic church. He is quite literally a protestant.
41
Bawstahn123 Apr 2, 2026 +9
\>He's of the sect that's basically just evangelicals in fancier hats. They like the aesthetics, hierarchy and communal-control, IIRC
9
crankyconductor Apr 2, 2026 +8
>They like the aesthetics That's a massive part of the American Evangelical and Fundamentalist inferiority complex, honestly. They are really, *really* self-conscious about the fact that they don't have any majestic buildings or \~dramatic\~ liturgical traditions, and also that they're very much the Johnny-come-latelys of Christianity. They want the camp flair and historical legitimacy of Catholicism and Judaism, but they really, really hate Catholics and Jews. It'd almost be funny if it wasn't so sad.
8
armadillorevolution Apr 2, 2026 +2
I thought they intentionally didn't build fancy buildings though, because that's idolatry or whatever and the focus should be on worship. Nobody is stopping them from building fancy buildings and wearing fancy outfits if they want to, I thought that was a deliberate choice they were making?
2
crankyconductor Apr 2, 2026 +2
So I'm getting into pure hypothetical territory here, take it with a big bag of salt, but if I had to guess, they'd like to have their cake and eat it too. They don't want to be seen building the fancy buildings and wearing the fancy outfits, exactly, but they'd like to have the veneer of legitimacy they think those trappings lend other, older religions. I'm basing this mostly on the absolutely buckwild appropriation of Judaism and Jewish tradition by specifically fundamentalist nutters, where they basically do cargo cult Judaism. Shitty passover seders where yeasted, risen bread is a major focus, shabbat meals on Sundays, kids cosplaying with Temu tallitot, shofar blowing at and by specifically Christian churches, that kind of nonsense. (I've seen all of those examples from assorted fundies online.) You don't generally see weirdness like that in the swankier protestant denominations like Presbyterianism or Anglicanism, and my guess is because they carved out a \[Big Fancy Building and Fancy Clothes with Elaborate Rituals\] space for themselves that modern evangelicalism and fundamentalism are only just starting to realize that they miss. Look at the megachurches, with their light shows and over-the-top everything. As someone raised Catholic (recovering, thankfully), I find it all kind of tacky and gauche, but it's clearly filling a spiritual need for people. The fundamentalists are in an even tougher spot, because many of them have branched out and split like the Judean People's Front on steroids, and they tend to do church in strip malls and people's living rooms. People like ritual, they like belonging, and the modern fundies are *acutely* aware that they don't have ritual or tradition on their side, so...cargo cult Judaism it is. They also believe it makes them the True Church, and they're getting back to the *real* Christianity, which is to say, not Jewish, just Jew-ish.
2
armadillorevolution Apr 2, 2026 +2
Wow this is really fascinating, thank you for such a thorough response I was not expecting that! I've definitely seen bits of the 'cargo cult Judaism' thing here and there online, but didn't connect it to this broader need for legitimacy and ritual though (and didn't realize it was widespread, tbh, thought it was just a couple weirdos), that totally makes sense.
2
Bawstahn123 Apr 2, 2026 +2
\>I thought they intentionally didn't build fancy buildings though, because that's idolatry or whatever and the focus should be on worship. hivernageprofond Apr 2, 2026 +16
I'm surprised he hasn't been excommunicated. Dear Pope Leo, this dude is representing the catholic church right now...for America.
16
rygem1 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Not really how excommunication works. The vast majority of excommunication happens the moment the you perform an action or accept a belief that church cannon deems extreme enough your soul is at risk. It’s lifted with simple confession (has to be genuine though). The formal “you are excommunicated” statement typically only happens if you do something like consecrate your own bishop or interfere directly in the church’s functions to cause schism. The church as a brand doesn’t want to be seen as being in the business of locking people out of heaven (the pope’s flag is literally “the keys” to heaven). Rather it would be a quiet convo between him and a priest where the priest suggests he needs to receive the sacrament of reconciliation as he is worried JD’s soul is at risk.
3
hivernageprofond Apr 2, 2026 +3
I know how it works, and I'd say it falls into the later category. I'd say we're entering schism territory with his rhetoric. And I don't see him making a confession anytime soon. He's a very public representative for the catholic church who could influence other church members. Time and time again what he says (or the regime has said) has been admonished by the pope but he and the rest of these war mongers continue in their ways.
3
wha2les Apr 2, 2026 +2

the most alarming thing in the comments here is how many people are like "born catholic, us real catholics don't care about this". Hint: these idiots are 'put women back in the kitchen' types, worried about their extreme male privilege being just slightly eroded.

At some point, there will be a power struggle and one will emerge victorious. My money is on Theil and Palentir.

Catholic here. Doesn't matter if you are Catholic or not.  If you are a total shithead you are probably going to burn in hell. Also for all the fellow Catholic who pray and harass people at abortion clinics.  Stop it. Jesus said not to pray in public keep it private or in church. Stop making a public spectacle.  God hates that shit. God doesn't want you forcing your beliefs on others.  F*** off and leave people alone.  Also anyone who supports Trump is not a true Catholic and shows no sighns of truly following any religious teachings. The complete lack of attention to detail here really speaks to how performative his entire political persona is. This feels like when politicians hold a Bible upside down for photo ops.

Moose-Rage Apr 2, 2026 +2
I'm upset Harry doesn't actually wear that hat.

I’m a nonfiction editor. Several cover designs would have been put together by the publisher’s art team, but they definitely would have run them past the author for feedback and adjustments before finalizing and releasing any design publicly. I’d say this screwup is ultimately the publisher’s fault, but there’s simply no way that Vance, his agents, and probably several other people on his team didn’t see this design and sign off on it. I’d estimate that at *least* 15 smart professionals were part of this process at one point or another, and it’s frankly shocking that none of them said “and that’s a Catholic church, right?” (Or even “what church is that?”). Such an unforced error. I’ll be interested to see if they do anything about it.

WesIsaLeo Apr 2, 2026 +2
This. There is no way a book w/ Vance’s name on it got past his scrutiny as far as the outside. For these horrible people, it’s all about image (not content.) He no doubt chose the most bucolic, yet most “manly man man church” image they showed him, with the usual due diligence in veracity. /s

Especially when the "author" is the f****** vice president

"What's daddy doing to that couch?!?"
4
TransitionFC Apr 2, 2026 +3
Unlikely. Vance was an aetheist most of his life and is likely still one behind closed doors. His entire Christian schtick is a sham meant to appeal to their stupid base who would not elect him otherwise.
3
swimtwobirds Apr 2, 2026 +4
He titled the book "Communion" which is the same as a wonderful book by Bell Hooks, and his book "Hillbilly Elegy" was criticized as a ripoff of the title "Appalachian Elegy", again by Bell Hooks. Fixated much, JD?
4
transcendental-ape Apr 2, 2026 +5
JD works hard to be all things to all people. He’s a sociopath.
5
WesIsaLeo Apr 2, 2026 +3
Can we convert him to unemployed? 😠
3
Danimal198050 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Communion by Bell Hooks is an actual good book not written by a facist.

Whitley Striber already wrote Communion, but having the same book title as an alien abduction story is hilarious

JD Vance is type of person Jesus Christ warned us about.

All these books are is a money laundering scheme. Do you know one person who read Don Jr.'s book? No, but you see them in every bargain bin and on every goodwill shelf.

ahahaha these transparent grifting s c u m can't even pretend to have jobs that keep them busy. they have time to write lame books to sell to rubes. just have to keep extracting money from yokels, don't they

Killed the previous pope; hated by the current pope, can’t even get the church right.
3
manbeardawg Apr 2, 2026 +8
As a Methodist, this heretic needs to keep my church’s name out of his f****** mouth. Our couches are not soft and have been in the parlor since the 1950’s; essentially, there’s nothing for him here.

Of all the trivial hair splitting bullshit to write a memoir about Next up: JD Vance "Why I spell ketchup with a c" Or better yet "Why My Real Name Isn't JD Vance"

To be fair, both Methodist and Catholics are cool with each other and have had some ecumenical agreement on a lot of items.

It’s giving: tear gas a crowd to take a picture with a bible by a church. Maybe this time we put these creatures in cages.

I really admire JD's pragmatic approach to selecting personal values that will help him build his brand. We need more style over substance these days. /s

No way this guy wrote a book. It’s either ai slop or ghost written. Either way it’s a waste of paper.

The Catholic Church will always do the right thing, as soon as they've exhausted all other options.
2

How does he have time to write a book when he's currently working as VP?
2
sexyinthesound Apr 2, 2026 +2
This is the SECOND book he has put out with a similar or same title to books by Bell Hooks. Can’t have a Black feminist’s seminal works up in the google results you know.
2
Historical_Bend_2629 Apr 2, 2026 +2
The Pope ain’t gonna cover your garbage. You don’t speak for Catholics, Vance.
2
Guacsalsaqueso Apr 2, 2026 +2
Mark my words, once he’s gone (dead or out of office), MAGA is “done,” but “America First,” willl be the new iteration. America First is no foreign wars, but funding Israel and all of the other bad guys $$ and weapons without boots on the ground though. America First is no what Trump says but whatever is best for Christian Nationalists. Lex by Vance, Miller, Tucker Carlson (I think he’s going to run of Vance is not an option), and the like. Racists don’t want wars because their relatives may die and their gas goes up in price. They are fine with everything else.

And if enough Christians stop falling for charlatans then maybe there will be change.
2
Miss_Behavior Apr 2, 2026 +2
He stole another title from belle hooks. Appalachian Elegy, published in 2012. Hillbilly Elegy, published in 2016. Communion: The Female Search for Love, published in 2002. Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, published in 2026. It’s bizarre. But then so is he.

I'm sure it's just a means to an ends so his campaign funds and be funneled into his own pockets. He doesn't care about the cover he cares about cashing in and an opportunity for easy fraud.
