Longest serving Trump appointment by far.
>Powell entered public service in 1990, serving in multiple positions within the United States Treasury Department under President George H. W. Bush. He became a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors upon President Barack Obama's nomination in 2012. President Donald Trump elevated Powell to Chair in 2018 and President Joe Biden re-nominated him in 2021.\[4\]\[5\] As a Fed governor, Powell built a reputation during the 2010s as a consensus-builder in Washington.\[3\]\[6\]

its not even specifically due to trump in this case. Multiple presidents have treated Jpow as an island. And hes earned it.
Hes staying in the know so he can keep his successor from f****** everything up. Trump appointee aside, i don't think *anyone* could do better then Jpow, or make his boss blink quite like he could. Im pretty sure he knows his value, and trump and other career politicians do to, and would probably be *begging* him to stay in the loop as an advisor to the next guy at minimum.
48

Trump doesn't know a damned thing. There are probably other Republicans who are very happy to have him stay though. Just to keep Trump from totally f****** things up.

Nobody is happy with jpow staying who is openly pro Trump. Or they haven’t said they’re happy he is staying. Ironically jpow is doing the right thing by being political to keep the politics out of central banking. It’s a hill he’s clearly ready to die on. Yes this may ensure some stability for a couple of years. Idk where he goes back to and the votes rotate by district. So it may not be as impactful as we may think. Idk. It’s uncertainty added to something that was certainly uncertain.
12
ParahelixApr 30, 2026
+8
Of course they won't say they're happy. That would be political suicide. But they aren't all morons like him, and they know he shouldn't be dictating interest rates.
But yes, Powell is definitely doing the right thing to protect the institution of the fed.
As long as another Republican doesn't win in 2028 and they don't have a majority in the Senate, then hopefully Powell will be replaced with someone qualified and serious, rather than a political puppet like Warsh.
8
mattyhtownApr 30, 2026
+4
I think there’s a lot of reasonable economists that are kinda rolling their eyes. There’s definitely more uncertainty for how we move forward with a factional fed. Him even being perceived as a shadow chair or leader in dissent could cause more unemployment and inflation. This counterminding ther dual mandate. I think that’s kinda short term thinking. Long term Powell is doing the right thing.

They only do this because it's traditional, and helps ensure a smooth transition. Plus, most of them can make more money elsewhere.
Powell knows whoever Trump puts in is going to try and break the system, and him leaving the board also could undermine the majority rule on the board which doesn't want Trump trampling all over the economy. The chairman, on his own, really has no extra power over the rest of the board.

Name an airport after him. Put him on our passport. Make a coin of him. Make a dollar for him. Make a bible for him. Put his name next to JFK everywhere.
What did I miss, watches? phone? belt buckle? shoes? car?

That denomination may be in common circulation if this administration gets its way.

So how is this going to work when the Fed gets a new face, but has the same board of governors?
Is Trump going to continue to blame Powell or will his wraith be turned towards the new guy?

I think NYT talked about this being a possibility, that Trump in his attempts to bully Powell out of the spot might have actually entrenched him further.
Trump's whining about it now is even more pathetic because it's so toothless and now he's clearly the reason Powell is staying longer.

Can he be reelected to the chairman position via the FED board? I would rather it be the devil you know than a very likely Trumpian unknown.

So he could be made Chair of the FOMC. The chair of the federal reserve will be Warsh unless somehow the GOP doesn't pass his nomination.Traditonaly the Chair of the Fed has been made the Chair of the FOMC but it doesn't have to be, they can nominate and vote for any member of the board they wish.

A crumb of good news as Trump pecks away at any chance of government independence at least Powell's presence will be a toe hold.

As good as that all sounds, Trump still gets to appoint the next chair of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors...Powell just stays on as a regular board member and prevents Trump from appointing a new governor.
