Jews paused Indiana’s abortion ban — by turning a religious freedom law against the evangelical right
As governor, Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, amid a conservative Christian push against LGBTQ rights. A judge’s ruling is inspiring hopes other states’ abortion restrictions could be vulnerable.

With these conflicting religious belief systems it almost seems as if abortion should be a personal choice based on one's own personal and religious principles.

It's also well past time that "atheist" was recognized as a religious category (albeit not a religion), because the freedom to practice any religion by needs includes the freedom to NOT practice any religion. And that means any and all attempts to stop abortion are violations of the first amendment.

Also because: >Religious 'Nones' are now the largest single group in the U.S. https://www.npr.org/2024/01/24/1226371734/religious-nones-are-now-the-largest-single-group-in-the-u-s

I agree but I don’t think legally abortion rights are (always) struck down on religious grounds. Some of it appeals to scientific and medical evidence or laws and norms about murder.

There is no scientific or medical evidence re: abortion being murder. And there are norms either.

The Satanic Temple also has suits filed, for the same reason.

Instead extremists will say religion shouldn't be a choice anymore. :(

This is a perfect example of using the system against itself—love to see it.

Suddenly, those on the Christian right who argued passionately for religious freedom are crunching the gears, looking for reverse. According to them, these petitioners either lack "sincerely-held" religious belief, or religions "that preach violence" should not be protected under the Act. That last argument is pretty hypocritical, given it's coming from Christian evangelicals, who have zero problem with God smiting his and their enemies left and right.

I agree, let's start making exemptions for violent religions, starting with Hegseth

I'm reminded of the book of John where Jesus makes a whip and ejects merchants and animals from a temple, and starts flipping their tables and throwing their money all over the place.

I just read the judicial order from March 3 that this is about, and there's a particularly attention-grabbing paragraph in it: >The State’s articulated interest is in “protecting prenatal life.” (State’s Br. at 57). In light of Indiana’s inconsistent approach to “prenatal life,” however, the State has not met its burden to establish that this purported interest is compelling from the moment of fertilization or conception and under all circumstances. See Anonymous Plaintiff 1, 233 N.E.3d at 452.... This is followed by several more paragraphs of the court's reasons why the State of Indiana has no compelling interest in abortion restriction. This is pretty bombastic of that judge. I love her energy, but this is probably getting overturned.

>“Religions that preach violence are not protected by religious freedom claims.” He just went on record as claiming Judaism preaches violence.

As an Indiana resident with a uterus, hell yeah! Glad to see a shred of progress.
