I feel like with 19 kids and 2 of them being sexual predators, there will likely be more scandals. Or scandals in other families. You don’t have this level of sexual repression without consequences later on. When kissing a girl is seen as on the same level of sin as molesting a child, these things happen. Heck, the leader of IBLP, Bill Gothard, had to step down because there was so many sexual harassment claims against him.

I think you are right, to an extent. Regarding the parents, their public platform includes things like campaigning for candidates who are anti-trans rights, so one could argue that it’s newsworthy when they have people in their own family who are actually hurting children. They believe transgendered people hurt children, and support legislation that implies so. It’s kind of sad that the kids didn’t have a choice to be public or not, but here we are.

Michelle did a robocall about how awful it would be if trans people could use the bathroom that aligned with their gender identity. That MEN would be able to use women’s bathrooms. After Josh’s molestation of his sisters came out, she was asked if that was not hypocritical. One of the infuriating things Jim Bob and Michelle said was that because Josh was also a minor, he wasn’t a child molester.

When I lived in Pennsylvania, there was a newspaper article that showed a photograph that the Santorum Family had posted in their churches, yearly contact list of the whole family… Of course the wife isn’t allowed to use birth control and she had so many miscarriages and still births that they actually posted a picture with a baby that had died in their church contact list who does this… They were holding a dead baby and calling it. Part of their family… Absolutely insane Santor family is sick.

I don’t know. I think the purity culture that goes on in their specific quiverfull religion is sexual abuse on its own, regardless of whether Jim Bob ever touched those kids. These children are raised in a culture that is ALL about sex- but you’re bad if you ever think about sex. By creating this ultra taboo around sex along with a simultaneous obsession with sex- especially one where women are ALWAYS at fault for being “too tempting”- they’ve created a prime environment for abuse to flourish. All of the people in this religion have distorted beliefs and self worth and morality tied up in their understanding of sex, to an insane degree, and that is what fucks with your head.

And at the same time, anyone does anything you don’t like, instead of offering them forgiveness, you just scream that they’ll burn in hell. I know in Catholicism people go to confession and they’re supposed to do certain things to make up for their sins, like say Hail Marys or something. In regular Christianity, is there any such thing? Or is just asking for forgiveness all a person needs to do? Interesting that in this article, the son is not asked by the father to make any kind of statement or take any responsibility. Although I suppose he may have done that in an earlier conversation. But here, in this article, the father doesn’t even tell the son he did wrong. He just tells him God has forgiven him (for a heinous act!).
