Probably the funniest thing I had seen in my entire life at 7 years old.

Watching this scene for the first time at 11 years old is still the closest I've come to death. Laughing so hard I couldn't breathe for way too long

Jim Carrey gets all the credit but it's the whole thing that sold it. The filmography, the family's reaction, everything. Truly amazing.

QueezyF Mar 26, 2026 +31
The buildup to it with him getting progressively hotter, the fan dying, and then cutting to him making his way out is great comedy.

Without exaggeration, I literally fell into the floor laughing in the theater. Granted, I was 11, but it I still laugh to this day.

About 10 years ago I'm helping a friend move on a summer day. We're unloading a U-Haul and that thing is roasting us. He's sitting there for a moment while we're waiting for instructions from his wife on where to move a large piece of furniture and goes, "WAAAAARM" Hadn't thought about When Nature Calls in years, but bam, that scene came flooding back.

I’m 39 and i agree. After seeing the unedited version a few times, i saw a different tv cut—it didn’t show him coming out, just the family’s faces as they watched, and his noises. It was *just* as funny. Something about the mystery.

Forget how old I was, prob a teen, but I saw this in a theater. Never saw it coming. I've never laughed so hard in public in my life. Like doubled over, with fear of asphixiating. There were 20-30 people in the theater, and like multiple people having the exact same reaction. People standing up and some just literally rolling in the asles. Just screaming laughter to the point of pain. No f****** idea what happened for the next hour.

I’ve always contended that it’s the funniest scene in movie history. Also in one of the funniest movies ever (I still think Dumb & Dumber is #1)
14
MichaelMyersEatsDogs Mar 25, 2026 +7
It’s so well constructed. First you think the joke is it’s an obviously fake rhino. Then the fan goes out so you think stripping down is the joke. Finally you have the door handle breaking and the butt birth. Just perfect
7

The people in the film seeing it and being freaked out is key.

Did they have to cut the whole scene? If you can’t see the parts with the rhino’s butt, I’m not sure you’d even be able to tell what’s going on.
28
Noble_Flatulence Mar 25, 2026 +17
I saw it on TV once and the framing was zoomed in so you couldn't see where he was coming out of.
17
Troodonni Mar 25, 2026 +3
It’s hard to find a version in the US at least online where they didn’t cut the whole thing. It cuts to the family watching them him falling to the ground.
3

Just the family watching—“…mommy!”—and the noises he’s making. It’s honestly still f****** hilarious.

I'm kinda surprised it's held up as well as it has. Normally these props just by the nature of what they're made of degrade as they loose elasticity and crumble. You can see it on the tail but compared to other props this looks ok. Anyways I hope RLM got it and we start seeing Rich Evens pass VHS tapes out of a warn out rhino's a***.
139
givemethebat1 Mar 25, 2026 +20
It was already restored in the past, so it’s not exactly how it appears in the film (the joints no longer move).
20
Better-Spell346 Mar 25, 2026 +38
The joints actually never moved. Apparently any motion we see of the rhino from the outside was CGI. The only real purpose of the full-sized rhino was for the “birthing” scene. Most of the shots of Jim inside the rhino were filmed on a soundstage. [Source from Adam Savage’s Tested channel](https://youtu.be/Rd37nh9LvlI?si=4uNAFge4Y32p_YPd)
38
foxguy2021 Mar 25, 2026 +19
I watched that video a few weeks ago and something was off. Watch the scene again and see how much space Jim Carrey has to work with while in the rhino. Then watched the tested video and see how cramped the interior of the rhino is. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8t8Ir9SeRE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8t8Ir9SeRE) Specifically look at this timestamp and see how much room he has and the camera would have: [https://youtu.be/Q8t8Ir9SeRE?t=45](https://youtu.be/Q8t8Ir9SeRE?t=45) It just doesn't add up. I bet they had a rhino interior set built for Jim Carrey to perform in. And then they had the actual rhino prop they brought onto location (the one he crawls out of). Compare the rhino in the Tested video to the actual scene. The legs don't match at all. Like the other user stated its not exactly how it appears in film. I bet the legs were restored/replaced at one point. Its common for mechanical props to be harvested for parts after filming. As for the CGI, I doubt they used any except for the scene where you see heatwaves coming off the rhino, that might have been some sort of digital effect. However, nothing in the scene screams 1995 CGI. It appears the rhino prop is attached to some device that is moving it along the ground and the legs are just moving to make it look like its walking on its own. And when Jim Carrey comes crawling out of the rhino it looks like the back two legs have been possibly replaced to give the prop more stability for when Jim comes crawling out. I could easily be wrong. The film has a lot of visual effects credits but if those legs on the rhino are truly CGI they look damn good for 1995 and the compositing is really good considering the type of tools they had back then.

This is from the prop site auction page: While shots of Ventura inside his mechanized rhino were completed on a soundstage, this full-size example measuring more than 10 feet from tip-to-tail was built solely for exterior shots of the giant mammal. It originates from Planet Hollywood. Constructed from fiberglass with hard-coated styrofoam legs, the rhino features a removable latex sheet backside, a foam latex tail, a door hatch with hydraulic hinges on one side, and additional hydraulic poles, a padded chair, a control dashboard, and a fan on the interior, much of which would have required removal for any shots in which Carrey appeared. The fan turns on when powered. A number of years after filming, the latex elements on this rhino - which had dried out since production - were replaced for display. The legs and neck, originally made from latex, were replaced with rigid, sculpted hard-coated styrofoam. As a result of this process, the head and legs - which were originally movable as seen in the butt birth sequence - are now fixed in place.

It is massive and not for everyone for sure. It limits appeal. You need to have a commercial space or a large house to put it in.
2
DeficiencyOfGravitas Mar 25, 2026 +2
Yeah, it's weird seeing famous props going for prices I can actually buy. Not afford, mind you, but if I had an aneurism and decided to go nuts, I could be the owner of the rhino that gave birth to Jim Carrey. The only thing stopping me is good sense and that's a dangerous feeling.

HandbagsAtNoon Mar 25, 2026 +20
I remember laughing at this rhino scene to the point of fear (i.e., will I die from laughing?) when I was younger, but I merely smiled a bit upon a recent rewatch. Took that as a worrying sign. Is my mind so beset with anxiety and agitation that I can’t even enjoy the rhino birth scene anymore? Or is this not a comment on my mental health but rather a reflection of the scene being a miraculous one-time event — the laughter just can’t happen twice. However, my laughter matched the historic precedent in the case of Ventura throwing that frail man around and using him as a mink stole, flinging him over his shoulders, etc.
20
nyITguy Mar 25, 2026 +4
Same for me. I still die laughing from the blowdart scene though. For physical comedy, that's right up there with the best of Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton.

They were expecting it to sell for $4,000 - $8,000, weren't they? I always thought that sounded way too low. I was expecting something closer to $80,000 for some reason. So this is quite validating. I don't know what they were thinking with that estimate.

I worked on this movie and distinctly recall when this was brought into our shop. I wanted to sit inside of it so bad but the sfx guys said absolutely not.

This scene almost killed my grandfather. He had COPD for 20 years on oxygen when he saw this movie. He was laughing so hard we couldn’t tell if he was actually choking or not. But he kept waving us off on calling 911. When he finally come around and calmed down enough he wiped the tears from his eyes and said this was the funniest f****** thing he’s ever seen in his 76 years of life.

So someone just basically stole a legendary mechanical rhino. That seems so low for an iconic movie prop. I’m not saying it’s Indy’s whip, or Rosebud. But it’s arguably the most memorable prop, from a successful movie that stared a comedian who defined the decade.

Money well spent.

Potty humour but still love the scene with Cheech and the Corsican cow.

Somewhere out there a super fan is squeezing out of this prop rhino in their garage because seeing this scene awakened something inside them.

Probably one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in a movie.

One of, if not the best piece of physical comedy of all time. I can’t think of anything beating it. It’s a masterpiece.

I had a seizure when I quit drinking for good. I always liken this scene to that instance in my life. Came out of that “rhino vag” a new man!
1
hananobira Mar 25, 2026 +1
Where do you even put it? Right in the middle of the living room? “Hey, come on in! Thanks for coming. Please have a seat. Oops, watch out for the plastic rhino ass. Can I get you a drink to get started?”

meowana_ Mar 25, 2026 +1
I had completely forgotten about this scene until they mentioned it on Stumble and since then I've seen multiple articles about it, very odd topic for the baader meinhof phenomenon.
