Imagine being a historian in 2100 trying to explain that the 2026 Iranian Crisis escalated because the President was triggered by a Jimmy Kimmel monologue about a taco-themed acronym. We aren't in a constitutional crisis; we’re in a South Park episode that won't end.

Ap us history (if us history is a thing) will be so hard. You could easily explain this time as corrupt people doing corrupt things because they can and they wanted more money and nothing mean anything.

DingDongKirksDead 3 days ago +1
Hopefully history in 2100 about 2026 won't have to be exclusively done through archaeology.

tom-of-the-nora 4 days ago +275
I don't get the taunt either. Like, did you want him to do the crazy thing he threatened?
275
notsure500 4 days ago +144
No, but we want him to stop making the threats. I take it as "you're not going to f****** do it so stop pissing everyone off by saying it". A small part of thinks if he one time goes through with his bullshit, maybe, just maybe enough of his supporters and members of congress will turn on him to get him removed. But it's doubtful.
144
breakevencloud 4 days ago +83
This is it. How about don’t threaten to kill 93 million people to begin with? He’s being mocked for making a doomsday prophecy to begin with and then the end result being “Iran gets everything it wants” as a framework for peace lmao
83
SumpCrab 4 days ago +14
Yeah, but I don't believe these are empty threats. Trump would absolutely use nuclear weapons, killing a civilization, and wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Would you really put it past him? By calling him TACO, I believe we are just making it less likely that he backs down in the future.
14
breakevencloud 4 days ago +11
Nah, 0% chance he even tries to use a nuke. Dude only understands one thing and that’s money. Launching a nuke is bad for business, for both him and his little billionaire doofus friends. See the Strait of Hormuz for example. “We don’t need it, screw them, Europe can handle it.” Then all his big oil buddies are like “uh, no dude, my bottom line tho,” and what happens? “We need the Strait opened immediately, even though I just said we don’t!” If it’s going screw his finances in any way, he’s not going to do it - no matter what “it” is. Dude would run over a box of kittens for $5.
11
SumpCrab 4 days ago +7
Nuking Iran off the map opens the strait and is no cost to him. It doesn't matter if it won't work or will have side effects. He is shortsighted and stupid. I think you overestimate him.
7
breakevencloud 4 days ago +9
You’re insane if you think launching a nuke doesn’t impact him. Assuming no one else starts launching nukes, the entire world would almost assuredly sanction the USA and cripple our economy, screwing him and his little circle of friends and everyone else.
9
SumpCrab 4 days ago +7
I don't think that, I believe HE might think that. He has a history if ignoring long-term ramifications. You are coming at this from a sane perspective. I don't know why you believe Trump would.
7

That second sentence needs to be broadcasted every time his spin team get on tv
1
MrsMiterSaw 3 days ago +2
>Dude only understands one thing and that’s money He's a clinical narcissist. Money is just the easiest way for him to demonstrate that he's smarter and better than anyone else. Ultimately it's not money, it's him being right. And if you take *his money* out of danger he'll absolutely drop a nuke.
2
ripyourlungsdave 4 days ago +4
Then mocking him for chickening out is kind of the opposite of what we should be doing if we don't want him to make these threats, right? That's just going to push him to follow through one of these days, it's not going to stop him from threatening people. Because if you know Trump, you know he's been doing nothing but threatening people for the last 80 years. It's a stupid insult. And it's definitely not helpful, and I doubt it makes the innocent people in Iran that almost got blown up feel particularly cared for by the American left.
4
Vimmelklantig 3 days ago +1
That might be the intention for the most part, but plenty of US articles and news segments, not to mention social media, are framing it as simple mockery at him chickening out. His brain is turning to mush and there's a good chance the domestic situation will turn existential for him as the midterms get closer. I wouldn't rule anything out. Mocking a narcissistic sociopath for \*not\* committing genocide is a bizarre angle.
1
tom-of-the-nora 4 days ago
I want him to stop too, but that doesn't mean you taunt him.

0
kittyglitther 4 days ago +6
I don't think we have that kind of control over him.
6
Magnon 4 days ago +1
Hes not competent enough to lead. Its f****** insane we cant impeach him until we win midterms because the elected republicans wont hold him accountable.
1
Psigun 4 days ago +14
The point is that he makes wild threats to tank markets and then rescinds the threats regularly to make money. Its not that people actually wanted war-- they want him to stop profiteering off situations he manufactures. Missing the point if you think people actually wanted him to end Iranian civilization.
14
KimberlyWexlersFoot 4 days ago +4
Except calling him taco, in the balance of probabilities, is he more likely to stop peacocking, or is he more likely to not back down one time. My money is on the latter.
4
Beforemath 4 days ago +3
No, I don’t want him to put us in that situation to begin with. You can’t have the TACO without the initial ridiculous demand. Instead of praising him for chickening out we should be trashing him for starting it to begin with.
3
I_Am_Ironman_AMA 4 days ago +5
No, but I will call him a coward every time he makes a big bad threat and backs off.
5
Vimmelklantig 3 days ago +3
"You didn't commit genocide like you said you would, you coward" is a real weird angle to take.
3
FL_d 4 days ago +3
From what I can tell most people using the TACO taunt are not really using it as a taunt as much as they are trying to sane wash what's happening. Which is just as bad. Like you saw all the tech bros saying he was going to taco on the issue so keep trading. IDK but that's my take on it.
3
TheOneCalledThe 3 days ago +3
exactly, everyone taunting is apart of the problem. seems like a lot of it are doomers hoping for bad things to happen
3
i__Sisyphus 4 days ago +5
Yeah it’s really dumb, the point of calling someone a chicken is to tempt them into doing something they otherwise would not…. There are real people on the other end of his taunts
5
tom-of-the-nora 4 days ago +2
Apparently, people forgot what taunting is meant for.
2
cubonelvl69 3 days ago +1
So what are we supposed to do? Praise him for his great decision making?
1
i__Sisyphus 3 days ago +1
Are the two options in your head really 1-Tempt him to do evil shit Or 2-Praise him for great decision making Have you never had basic human interaction before? How about we denounce his evil predilection to do evil shit?
1
UrsusRenata 4 days ago +2
It started with tariffs and market manipulation. Had nothing to do with war — it was a warning not to make big investment decisions in reaction to tariffs that Trump would waffle on.
2
tom-of-the-nora 4 days ago +4
It doesn't make sense to use it for any kind of war thing when trump is a psychopath. Or economic stuff. Don't goad the the psychopath into doing the absolutely evil stuff he's threatening.
4
SuggestionSignal5049 3 days ago +1
What should people do instead? Applaud? Cheer? Thank him? It’s a weekly thing where he threatens another country and does something to manipulate the stock market.
1
tom-of-the-nora 3 days ago +2
Insult him and his inability to act like an adult.
2
SuggestionSignal5049 3 days ago +1
That’s literally what people are doing. Every Friday he says something to manipulate the markets, and then changes his course every Monday. Can’t you see the trend? He’s not going to do anything to Iran like he threatens because he’s an idiot who has no idea what he’s doing.
1
prarie33 4 days ago +1
Like, the threat is all about market manipulation, the taco is once the $$$ have been reaped ( or the bond market begins to squeal)
1
jrec15 4 days ago +1
It's calling out his manipulative nonsensical AF behavior in hopes that maybe by some miracle he just f****** stops doing it Yea, it's a dangerous game, obviously we dont want him to actually do the terrible things he bullshits about. But we're already living in the dangerous game regardless. By not calling him out, you're essentially enabling his manipulation and praising him for backing out of the ridiculously terrible bullshit situations that he started. Pick your poison. Im gonna continue to mock the mother f***** for his bullshit
1
Jayrodtremonki 4 days ago +1
He deserves it.  If you don't want to get TACO taunts then don't go into every situation with all of the bluster of a meth addict.   I understand that the preferred outcome is for him not to wipe out a civilian infrastructure in the definition of a war crime, but its his own self-created dilemma where he will either become a war criminal or have his feel-feels hurt.
1
Outside-Swan-1936 4 days ago +1
My issue with it is he used the PM of Pakistan as an out for his threat. They gave the PM the exact tweet he needed to make (he screwed up and left the "Pakistan PM Draft" verbiage in the original). The admin is trying to make it seem like there is actually progress being made and that his threat worked, when it's just large-scale manipulation. Obviously we are all relieved it didn't end in genocide, but he needs to stop making the threats in the first place, and when the threats fail, the lies to try and save him from humiliation are also unacceptable.
1
Indigoh 3 days ago +1
For him to cross the line like that, while it's still likely to have consequences, could ruin his plans and prevent America from quietly waiting until he gains enough power that committing atrocities no longer has consequences. It feels like it's fully inevitable for him to eventually cross the line, and the later he does it, the worse it will be.
1
suff0cat 3 days ago +1
From my perspective it’s just us treating him the same way he treated North Korea with all the “Rocketman” heckling. Why is it fine to mock other countries for obvious saber rattling but not this Bloviating Buffon? What else do you expect us to do but resort to gallows humor when, in reality, none of us really know when this dementia riddled dickhead is gonna Watch The World Burn for his sins?

Hot take: I actually want the people who aren’t threatening to kill an entire civilization to get elected
6
InsaneSnow45 4 days ago +46
>Jimmy Kimmel launched a back-handed defense of Donald Trump after the president was accused of “chickening out” of his threat to wipe out the “whole civilization” of Iran. >Trump has frequently been called out for backing down over his brazen threats—with the U-turns earning the nickname TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out). >Kimmel explained why he dislikes the acronym and said he “congratulates” Trump for capitulating over his threat. >“I have to be honest, I don’t like this TACO thing, this ‘Trump always chickens out,’ because it puts him in a corner,” the late-night host began. >“I congratulate him for chickening out,” he explained. “I think it was the right thing to do. A lot of presidents, after wasting $40 billion on blowing up a school full of children, would stick with it. They would keep going until their demands for the reasons they started this war were met. >“They would keep bombing until they knew for sure that Iran would stop enriching uranium and murdering protesters. But not Donald Trump. Our president, he looked at the price of gas. He looked at the polls. He said, ‘Oops.’ And he tucked his pointy little tail between his porky pink legs and tiptoed right back out to the golf course. Mission accomplished, everyone.

Defense? He's just being a rational person in not wanting trump to do the nightmarishly evil thing he threatened to do.

Snoo_47183 4 days ago +8
Right?! When the alternative is nuking one of the oldest civilization and killing millions of civilians for the crime of, check notes, having lived 47 yrs under one of the cruellest regime ever known to mankind you want him to back off. Of course that retreat should have taken the form of invoking the 25th and seeing massive strikes across the US until he is removed, but not committing genocide is still a better outcome
8
tom-of-the-nora 4 days ago +7
I'll take the less genocide option. I don't want a genocide to happen.
7
Snoo_47183 4 days ago +5
Yup! But I still don’t get why he is still in power and how people carry on like “haha! See he didn’t mean it. Anyway, what’s for dinner?”

1
I_eat_mud_ 3 days ago +1
How is him saying "I congratulate him for chickening out" any different than the TACO insult?
1
tom-of-the-nora 3 days ago +1
One is telling him he did something right. The other is taunting him because he didn't follow through.
1
I_eat_mud_ 3 days ago +1
He's still calling him a f****** chicken lmao
1
tom-of-the-nora 3 days ago +1
Good ahead, just don't goad him into following through on what he said.
1
Icy-Gap-1429 4 days ago +10
It's a little bonkers to stand on the soapbox and say the issue is that that the guy saying absolutely batshit things might follow through with them if people are mean to him. Giving real "don't wear that to the party, you know how boys are" vibes.
10
tom-of-the-nora 4 days ago +2
Be mean to him. Just don't taunt him into following through on his threats.
2
CasualReeding 4 days ago +7
It's more a taunt because the president of the USA's word means absolutely nothing. That position should bear some responsibility. Obviously all politicians lie but this is just a complete joke. Nobody is upset that he backed down but we shouldn't even be involved in this in the first place.
7
tom-of-the-nora 4 days ago +2
When the majority of what he says is bonkers evil c***, good, I'm glad his word means nothing
2
whiskydyc 4 days ago +15
Yeah, I don’t want to call Trump “chicken” for backing down from a holocaust.
15
UrsusRenata 4 days ago +4
TACO started with Trump’s tariffs and market manipulation. Had nothing to do with war — it was a warning not to panic over stock dips in reaction to tariffs that Trump wouldn’t implement.
4

It did start like this but now people use it for everything. “Ha ha he chickened out! Didn’t even nuke Iran!” is really not the take we should be pushing.

Feeling this same way. We want him to TACO. I don’t need any more unprecedented events in my lifetime. I had to watch the Challenger explosion, the OJ Trial Verdict, Iraq War highlights and 9/11 on live TV, in a classroom, before I was old enough to drink. I’m tired Boss.

If Trump was gonna use nukes it would be “Beginning of WWIII” Wednesday.
3
Lanzifer 4 days ago +4
This is EXACTLY how I feel about it. People with fragile egos and way too much power SHOULD be all bark and no bite. The more you mock him for not following through the more likely he will snap and follow through. A normal person would learn from this mocking "I shouldn't make outrageous threats next time" an insecure person learns from this mocking "I should follow through next time"
4
cubonelvl69 3 days ago +1
If he snapped and followed through then someone might actually step up and remove him from office. Every Republican I know will just say, "oh it's a negotiation tactic. He's not actually gonna do some crazy shit". And I'm getting really f****** sick of that being a defense for all the crazy shit he's threatening to do

it undermines the credibility of the country for the leadership to be constantly lying in public. No one wants war crimes, AND they want a government that doesn’t act like a third grade bully.

Trump voluntarily made the original threat. The point of the taunts isn’t that he failed to commit genocide, it’s that he’s completely full of shit when he made the original threat. Jimmy Kimmel’s statement was a lead in for a joke. In this case, the premise of the joke was a strawman argument that we’re all taunting Trump for not carrying out a genocide. Kimmel likely understands the nuance, but that doesn’t serve the joke. Another example of TDB making a story out of nothing.
1
Big_Ad_7715 4 days ago +1
As much as I agree, this whole “chicken out” framing distracts from what is obviously market manipulation. Millions have been made on information minutes before any of these reversals. People are making money hand over fist, and the DOJ is run as the personal injury lawyer to the president.

I mentioned that yesterday, gloating "taco" is sorta like wishing the war did progress to the next stage instead of celebrating a pause. Almost like damn if you do damned if you don't so why not just do the war if the shit talking doesn't care how it plays out. You'll notice I didn't say to forget the monologue or history between the two men. I'm just saying if you're against the war its a weird look to then turn around and goat the next action as a response to so called winning.

As a Canadian, one thing that has really confused me during Trump 2.0 has been how much it feels like some of you are living for the drama of it all rather than, you know, saving your nation from a dictator? It’s like during the Super Bowl and ICE being in Minn. Your own civilians were getting gunned down in the street, but all you could wait for was to see if he got made that a Latin man danced and sang at the sports ball game? Really? It feels like hubris to be caught up in the tabloid side of it at, and not the fact that your president has been threatening allies with invasion, threatening enemies with nukes, and has basically formed your own version of the gestapo.
-3
Common_Sense_2025 4 days ago +1
Maybe as a Canadian, you should learn more about how our government is set up to understand that short of doing some illegal, dangerous things, we can do little between elections except call our representatives.
