Roberts’ tone about Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship was especially biting for a chief justice known for his measured public comments.

Let's Hope he sticks to that. “We’re in a new world now,” Sauer told Roberts, “where 8 billion people are one plane ride away from having a child who’s a US citizen.” “Well, it’s a new world,” Roberts rejoined. “It’s the same Constitution.” https://www.cnn.com/2026/04/02/politics/john-roberts-told-donald-trump-exactly-what-he-thinks

If they’re here long enough to have a baby here they’re likely staying or trying to. He’s acting like women are flying around within weeks of their delivery dates (I am sure some may, but generally advised against) just to have their babies be US Citizens. He is also saying ‘8 billion’ ignoring gender stats, economic ability to even be able to afford a flight, etc, etc

I worked maternity in a hospital in a very international city. There were definitely women who would travel here just to give birth and go back home. Not a huge number, but it happens. But American women aren't having a lot of babies, and people from these counties tend to come here to be medical providers. I'd rather that than the alternative

There's been a thing about women from China coming over to give birth and then immediately flying home but the numbers are so small that it doesn't make a difference anyway. The way it was explained to me is that the larger worry is that those kids from China will come over here as American citizens but will really be working for the Chinese government. I get that concern. Espionage is a real threat. That is absolutely no reason to deny birthright citizenship to everyone at large.

Number one way to stop “anchor babies”. Speed up the asylum process so immigrants don’t have to wait literal years for a hearing.

That's what I find so frustrating about all these deportations. We basically said, "ok you can hang out here until we can find time for your day in court." Then we changed our minds

Trump wants to get rid of the temporary status of these migrants. Meaning he would immediately create 1.5m illegal immigrants over night.

Yes - it’s a lot of lying.

Let’s apply that logic toward gun control

Exactly! Sauer's was such a hypothetical take, it has to come from a Republican.

The 2nd amendment was written with muskets in mind, not fully automatic weapons as well. We can’t pick and choose spots to interpret based on the “new world” while keeping in the old world for others. Either keep everything based on past precedent and never overturn old rulings or change everything all the time based on the way things are now a days. But don’t try to have it one way here and the other way there.

It was meant to be changed as society evolved, but instead we have devolved into tribalism. The chances of a Constitutional Convention in my lifetime are about the same as the Constitution being abolished all together.

If Drump tries to mess around with the constitution then there will be hell to pay like an attempt at a third term.

I’m guessing Obama would defeat him if that happens

Somehow... he returned.

Sorta kinda apropos of that, I started watching Bodkin on Netflix, and there was a credit that came up in the opening that said “Executive Producers Barack and Michelle Obama” and I was like… WHAT.

They are trying to set it up by saying the intent was no more than two terms in a row.
2
Confident-Breath2615 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Last I heard they were - of course - trying to craft it so that only a 2 term President from this point on could get a 3rd term.

Oh god please make that happen

Why can’t he just declare are new constitution? /s

I won't get too excited over what a corrupt justice says, Him and the other conservative justices already betrayed the nation when they broke oaths to uphold the constitution and be impartial. You can't trust dishonorable people like that so nothing is really certain until they are removed from that court.

There was no need to acknowledge Drump. When Chief Justice John Roberts and the eight associate justices took the Supreme Court bench on Wednesday for a fundamental debate over American identity, they did not acknowledge the presence of Donald Trump in the courtroom.

Took the Melania Bedroom approach, I see.

Trump helped plenty of Russian women with birthright citizenship in his first term. He could still be doing it for all I know. [https://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/london-life/russians-flock-to-give-birth-at-trump-s-properties-in-the-us-so-their-kids-can-have-dualcitizen]

Yeah and we know why he really did that

There are not 8 billion people who *want* to get on a plane and have a baby in the US. There may be some. Maybe even many. But the majority of the world A) do not want to, B) is not pregnant, and C) cannot afford it.

Yes. If a country is the greatest in the world, you have to expect people to want to go there. So is this all a part of building the wall? Inflation, high gas prices, etc., all to deter people from coming here by not being #1 in the world?

>John Roberts told Donald Trump exactly what he thinks Was the "he" in the sentence referred to Trump or was it referring to Roberts? Can't these people write less ambiguously?
2
midwinter_ Apr 2, 2026 +3
That's asking *way* too much of American political journalism.
3
RazarTuk Apr 2, 2026 +1
There's only one "he" in that sentence who would make sense as an antecedent

Why would Robert’s tell trump what trump thinks
1
Entry-Party Apr 2, 2026 +1
From my understanding, and presumably this would apply worldwide, once a person sets foot in another country, even as a visitor, they become subject to the laws of that country! If someone takes drugs into a country where drugs are illegal, they can't complain if they get arrested, and possibly executed.  Indonesia for example!!

Too late, though. We need non partisan judges.
