Donnie Yen has only been in 7 Hollywood movies.

Yeah, I loved it in theaters, but didn’t watch it again until Andor made me want to watch it again. They’re my favorite stories in the whole Star Wars universe (including the og trilogy which, from a 44 Star Wars fan growing up (was never crazy into it, but I saw all the prequels in theaters because I was into the og trilogy as a kid.

I went to see it Christmas Day with my dad and sister. He took us to see Return of the Jedi in 1985 when we were 8 yo (I remember thinking Vader was cool, Leia was amazing, and Luke was weird [?!?]). I now have a great memory of another great Star Wars movie with my dad and sister. I looked over during the show and my dad was riveted, looked just like a little kid. 🩷

It's a cool story, actually. Donnie was a fight coordinator on the movie, and someone stepped back and said, "tf are we doing? That's Donnie Yen! We are NOT taking adva tage of this opportunity enough!" And no one was sure if he'd want to, but they asked if he wanted to suit up and play a character while he did his other stuff. That's why he had no lines.
23

Well, technically in the script they are nazi, and Ron Perlman leaves the lines. The real story theme is “Anti establishment.” The vampires talk about pure blood, but their leader is so old he can’t eat, hes building another race of other breed of vampire, he has a racist authoritarian police force….. and blade breaks all those molds.

>Most Chinese (especially Hong Kong) actors need to at least pay lip service to the CCP. It is the price of operating in that market. Donnie, like Jackie, has a long history of going above and beyond in that regard.
I've worked with Jackie quite a lot and my take is that he has a lot of business in the mainland and if you're going to run a business in the mainland then you need to play ball with them. He employs hundreds of people and owns facilities there, and all that would could be almost instantly cancelled if he didn't do the things he does.
Is that a moral issue? Yes. But it also demonstrates the complexity in such things and I think it's very hard to judge such things as an outside. Which is often how I feel about China in general, and I lived and worked there for a decade.
I don't think I like how these guys have gone about things ... but even with having some access to them, I don't feel confident judging either way.
Anecdotally, I know Jackie found living in HK really difficult by the 2010s. He was constantly hounded by media and it made it really difficult for him while he was there. I think China felt like an escape for him a lot of the time.
>Also there are a LOT of rumors of him being "inappropriate" with the actresses in his films. But, to my knowledge, nothing concrete (even by "open secret" standards).
I've worked with Donnie too, albiet much much less than Jackie, and never say anything personally that I would deem inappropriate. I wouldn't want to comment on this too much but my personal experience is to the negative on this. I found him good to work with.
For what it's worth, the whole lip service to the CCP thing is even more exacerbated when you look at how the film industry evolved and changed in HK. The industry went after money from the mainland quite early; Wilson Yip told me once that movies like SPL could never be made anymore because of the money situation: you could make it in HK for $2,000,000 and hope to maybe get $5,000,000 back at the extreme end of things (lucky if that) or you could get ten times that budget and twenty times the return by working with Mainland. It's really, really, hard to deal with such discrepancies in budget when you're making a film ... particularly action films.
These changes happened well before the mainstream changes in HK too, when the one country, two systems situation was still being more adhered too. And my conversations and work with all the above happened well before the 2019 riots, so perceptions were different then and I don't think most of these people expected such a sharp decline in the freedoms of HK.
I guess what I'm getting at is the situation is really pretty complicated. I have a very love/hate relationship with China, and I desperately miss something that's now missing in Hong Kong.

So one thing I'm always curious about, how much of the whole "they're really buddy with the fascist government" just Western propaganda?
As in, I know China has some major issues in how it's governed, but growing up in the West had ingrained in me the "everything they do is bad and usually evil" mindset, which I've only just recently (last 3 years or so) started to change.
2
axiomatic-Mar 25, 2026
+4
Ahhh, it's unfortunately complicated.
Does the CCP do a heap of bad shit? Yes. From my perspective they do. And yet they also have raised more people out of poverty than any other government ever, and done a bunch of pretty incredible stuff that you kind of have to respect.
A good example of this complicated relationship is the three rivers gorge dam. On the one hand it's an ecological and sociological nightmare; they fdisplaced over a million people forcing them to up and move, and they destroyed some prestine ecological environments. On the other hand it's helped prevent flooding downstream and provided masses of clean energy to the country, almost 10% of the countries entire electricity when planned but more like 1% now, as clean energy. So is the project good or bad? I'm not sure ... but I think it would only happen in China.
The government is repressive though. They definitely do bad shit and, critically, they try to control what people say and think. It is not a democracy and it's not communist. But it is quite socialist and many, many, of it's people have prosposered in ways they might not have if China hadn't done the things they did.
I dunno. Governments are messy. I'm glad I don't live there anymore but I'm also thankful to have spent time there and gotten to understand it.

I feel like it's established that John Wick isn't really the best fighter in that world, but he is the most resilient by far. In a straight 1v1 where the opponent is serious about killing him, there are several names that probably can do the job, but if he's given even the slightest bit of leeway, he will survive and come back with a vengeance.

Yeah, can we f****** not? The first film was fantastic for its mystique. Every subsequent film has stripped away the excellent subtle worldbuilding of the original.
Always good action and spectacle, but the silenced pistol "fight" and the "everyone is an assassin" reads like a Kojima story. Love the guy, but it was just sillier and sillier as it went on.
Related: Kingsman the Golden Circle seemingly forgot everything that made the original special. Big letdown.

Respect to you sir, and I agree often about letting a movie be one and done (iron giant, little miss sunshine, the Matrix).

Yeah but as an extremely low stakes fun action movie series I don’t give a shit if they just keep cranking these out. A 7/10 is a more than good enough to justify cool fights

honestly i love spending time in this universe but i am surprised they are focusing on this character because although the universe is full of crazy stuff, this is one character i'd think they wouldn't want to pull the thread on. it's badass that he's a blind assassin, but the idea that he wouldn't be taken out super quickly/easily breaks suspension of disbelief even in the john wick universe.

oby100Mar 25, 2026

It didn’t work in the movie he was in. Writers just gave up on the concept after one scene and he’s never worse off than any other assassin for being blind after that point.
The writing was so lazy in the last movie I wouldn’t be surprised if they accidentally included a line of him saying, “you look surprised.”

Milking it would be bringing John back from the dead.
Focusing on different characters in the world and showing more stories is good.

I think it’s not just the action but the world it’s set in really helps too - like the Nobody films are pretty similar in action to John Wick but they aren’t anywhere as interesting as the John Wick franchise

The second one was was meh, would have liked it a little more had it not been for one of the worst covers songs of all time appearing in the movie. I'm not even a big Johnny Cash song and I found that Ring of Fire cover to be absolute f****** dogshit.

I loved it on first watch, and on rewatch, i dunno... some fantastic bits but a lot of problems too. But I think Donnie Yen can carry an action movie better than almost anyone, so I'm more confident in his thing.

To be fair, Ballerina had lots of issues stemming from them allegedly having to do a lot of reshoots near the end of production.

The John Wick universe is getting milked hard but at least this focuses on the most interesting supporting character from JW4. Donnie Yen behind the camera means the action will be phenomenal. Rina Sawayama is an interesting choice, curious what her role is.

Maybe i'm an idiot but how could an assassin be blind? Did he finally learn the force or something? Or is he like Daredevil?
3
DeliberateCookieMar 25, 2026
+5
He uses little doorbell sensor things to alert him of where people are then he just spams bullets at the sound. He actually misses a lot of shots as expected since he can't see shit.
The fistfights are a little more unbelievable but people average out in size so he probably knows where to swing for a reliable hit. Point shooting is also something that can be learned (basically video game hipfiring in real life that's been taught since WWII) so his muscle memory from when he wasn't blind would work for hitting people at close range. At the end of the day it's an over the top action movie so some liberties are fine.

I guess you can't blame them for milking this for everything it has. If people keep paying to see them, why not, but these movies jumped the shark for me a while ago.

My friends and I rewatched the 4 John Wicks recently and felt that 1 was the strongest. 2 and 3 were almost in the awkward teenager phase but by the time they got to 4 it became a full fledged comic book movie, but in a better "we know what this is now" kind of way.
13
STFUNeckbeardMar 24, 2026
+10
Exactly. You shouldn’t be watching John Wick for some masterpiece of modern cinema. If you go in knowing it’s just going to have a shitton of sick fights loosely connected by a meh story, you’ll have fun. I don’t get mad at a fireworks show because the story wasn’t good. I get hyped because it’s awesome

John Wick is a billion dollar franchise that is the cheapest in the bunch to make. The only movie that cost over 100 Million was the fourth one. Stop and think about that. Lionsgate essentially paid the cost of one Marvel movie and got FOUR highly popular deeply entertaining films that made well over a billion dollars in profit.
9
overthemountainMar 24, 2026
+2
Wow, so they paid the price of one marvel movie and got the box office of one marvel movie? Incredible.
Again, I get why they make them, but I feel like it's become the modern equivalent of the Rambo or Rocky franchises at this point. I was going to say Fast and the Furious, but with Rambo and Rocky at least the first one was actually good before just devolving into more generic action.

The blind assassin thing is one of those ideas that sounds super cool when you bring it up but it just doesn't execute well.
As much as I thought he played the roll well I found the roll itself immersion breaking.

Ugh. Love Yen. Ip Man. Love all of it. But sometimes you need to let a really cool character exist in mystery and not spoil it be trying to take a concept that barely was in the realm of believable if not for the power of Yen, and let it stay there.

I thought it was *meh* and I f****** LOVE the Wick movies.
Some decent action, but apart from the obligatory cameos it's like a DLC. Optional side mission that ultimately affects nothing in the main game.
