Duggar is 31 now. At the time of the alleged crime, he would have been 27 and already a married man with children of his own yet he snuggles under a blanket with a 9 year old that he then molests. Following in Josh's footsteps, hope they check his computers for CSAM.

To add to this - not that it matters, they're still living human beings who deserved protection - but he had an infant daughter at that time and his closest sibling was a sister (Joy) that was victimised by Josh previously. They all knew Josh was a monster growing up, I can't imagine how it felt for Kendra (wife) and for Joy to discover he was a monster all along, as well. He knew what was done to his sisters...

Apparently an estimated 30% of abusers were abused as children. 2 in that family now have this on their records, there's definitely some past abuse from someone else in that family.

A lot of abusers will lie about being abused in hopes of working out a plea deal, or getting jury sympathy. It seems logical to think that a large chunk of abusers were abused themselves, but unfortunately it is really hard to prove and you have to take the word of the abuser in most cases.

I know this is an old trope, but it’s not accurate and it shames actual victims, suggesting they are likely to become predators. A majority of children who were molested do not go on to become predators.

And even if we take that statistic as fact, that would mean 70% of abusers had not been abused. I read an article recently that said sibling sexual abuse is more likely to happen in either a religious and overly strict environment or in a libertine environment with few boundaries. I think the duggars clearly fall into the first camp. Add in the fact that there are a ton of kids, and their fame and misogyny and it unfortunately makes sense that there would be at least one abuser among them. Two definitely is a surprise though.

I’m not sure if you’re misunderstanding this or if I’m misunderstanding you, but the 30% mentioned is not 30% of all victims of abuse becoming abusers themselves (that’s wayyyyy too many), it’s 30% of caught abusers saying that were allegedly abused themselves .

Well, that’s not how it was worded but even then, more recent studies disagree. The 30% is from 2001, e.g. Studies indicate that while a proportion of sex offenders were abused as children, this group is not the majority. a 2016 study of more than 38,000 males found that very few who were sexually abused went on to become offenders themselves: only 4% of the sexual offenders studied had a confirmed history of child sex abuse themselves. all of these studies suffer from issues, though, including that only 1 in 20 child molestation cases are ever reported. so, this trope has been disproven in more recent studies, and it is a dangerous smearing of victims who already hesitate to come forward.

Seems to me like they must have been molested themselves as children. Not saying this to defend them or excuse them. There is no excuse or defense, not even if the same horrible thing was done to them. Saying this because I feel it's very likely there's at least one more offender running around who needs to be caught.

The incident happened 6 years ago but the article states that Duggar was confronted about his actions and apologized and stopped. So no one went to the police 6 years ago even though they witnessed it occurring?

The child was 9 years old when it happened. 14 years old now. He/she found the courage to tell his/her parents. The parent confronted Duggar, Duggar admitted it and apologized. Parent wasn't satisfied (Thank God!!) & went to the Police. The Police arrested Duggar. All of this (aside from the deviant acts) just happened in the last 48 hours.
