Setting it in the 80's is definitely the right move. One of the biggest complaints about the 2006 movie was that making set in the present, without any real nods to the source material, made it feel like it was just another generic cop movie.

Honestly the way it is shot with that early digital look its so 2006 that shit looks incredible hugely influential look when you look at things coming out now in commercial musical video world
