That headline makes everyone else panic, right?

It’s a terrifying precedent being set.
165
LOHare Mar 31, 2026 +188
The precedent was set with Muslims in the 2000s and Americans were by and large okay with it, because Muslims bad, and if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. Anyone trying to be reasonable about it was labeled a terrorist sympathizer and against the troops. This is the precedent bearing more fruit.

The problem isn't trump. It's america. This has been building for decades.

True, but maybe some people hope we come to our senses this time? Fat chance, right? The best time would’ve been, ~1984, but now is the second best time.

Specifically conservatives America and the “independents” who think “both sides are the same. Democrats have been the bastion of everyone not insane since the signing of the Civil Rights Act by LBJ. This makes Democrats a weird hodgepodge of pro business liberals and neoliberals as well as more progressives. But dear god, the Republicans have been crazy since they realized they could win elections by courting evangelicals and racists. Nixon aimed to criminalize left leaning groups with a war on drugs and Republicans never stopped. Meanwhile the suburban folk decided that all that matter was the price of gasoline and loved not paying taxes needed to sustain our democracy and infrastructure.
15
CreekPrincessBitch Apr 1, 2026 -8
Before the signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964, they were the party of slave ownership. And before someone says it- parties don’t “flip” overnight. The switch people refer to now took years to actualize into how we view the two parties today. 60 years ago wasn’t all that long ago either. I’m certainly not advocating for republicans, but it’s much more nuanced than “one side crazy, other side less?”. Yes, Nixon started the war on drugs. Clinton caused the real increase in criminalization, with his 3 strikes law creating an exponential swell in the US prison populations (and unjustly targeting specific demographics). The democrats vs republicans debate is so tiring because they can be different while still being 2 sides of the same coin. It’s the 99% vs the 1%. The rich vs the poor. The powerful and connected vs the rest of us. One big club and you ain’t in it.

Ven18 Mar 31, 2026 +28
Yep the US has been on a fascist slide for decades (hell you could argue nearly a century since the last batch of Nazi or even longer) and the problem is so many Americans have just gone along with it for so long now that it’s reaching the final stages people are somehow shocked. Like what did you expect
28
MightbeGwen Apr 1, 2026 +6
It started with Grant giving clemency to the confederate officials. They should have all been hanged or at least exiled. We let the losers keep their prestige and money, just not their human inventory. They used that prestige and money to retain economic and political power. The South has been waiting to rise again since we didn’t deliver the final blow.
6
CatholicSquareDance Apr 1, 2026 +3
the failure to truly crush the traitors to the Union and the subsequent failure of Reconstruction are truly the greatest failures in American history.
3
DKDamian Apr 1, 2026 +1
The south? In New York, in 2016, Trump received 36.75% of the vote. In 2024 he received 43.31% What are you talking about?
1
MightbeGwen Apr 1, 2026 +1
Wasn’t talking about Trump. Was talking about the American political fascist undertones. Reading comprehension is a skill, use it more and it’ll improve.

AIPAC is fine with it as long as Americans pay for and die protecting Israel.
34
ford7885 Mar 31, 2026 +20
Nobody fought harder than AIPAC against a Jewish man becoming President of the US in 2016 and 2020.
20
asuleiman Apr 1, 2026 +6
Because that Jewish man was a threat to them because he’d actually focus on American citizens and not Israel. Hilary Clinton is an Israeli supporter and would do anything Israel wants
6
LingonberryHot8521 Mar 31, 2026 +23
Yup. Neither AIPAC nor Israel has ever really cared about Jews not living in Israel. I remember some of the backlash when thousands of Ethiopian Jews fled to Israel back in the 1980s or something. I was quite young. There was some fanfare about a lost tribe returning and then there was a lot of "they're not welcome here" from Israel.
23
Prophet_Tehenhauin Mar 31, 2026 +4

They’re not the only groups that are getting listed by this administration. Trans folk, democrats and more than likely anyone else that’s seen as an enemy by this administration is getting added to these lists that has yet been named. Fear and panic should’ve entered into public discourse from jump as should cases seen to end these lists.

To “combat antisemitism.” That’s what the CNN article says. Although this feels the exact opposite.
60
Scarletyoshi Mar 31, 2026 +20
Conservatives claim universities, and thus by extension Democrats, are antisemitic due to anti-genocide protests on campuses. This is part of an effort to prove Jewish students are being discriminated against in some way and put more pressure on universities to further collaborate with the Trump administration.
20
AnamCeili Mar 31, 2026 +52

Nah, they'll forcibly deport them to Israel this time around. That's one of the reasons so many antisemites originally supported Zionism and the creation of Israel.

The thing that isn’t being regularly publicized is that many of the Trump EEOC investigations involve a request/demand for the demographic information of the entire workforce. They demanded it of every law firm that was on the EEOC’s “target” list about a year ago, and several (all? No one really knows) negotiated their way out of giving that information. Private companies, when subject to EEOC complaints about being discriminated against for being white or a man, have been in the process of negotiating the EEOC’s requests for widespread PPI for company employees. This is an extremely troubling decision of the court, which will impact the way a lot of current investigations are being handled; believe it or not, no private company *wants* to hand over this information (for free, anyway). But they *are* all being asked for it.

And that's why I select "prefer not to answer" on all demographic questions on required surveys and forms.
60
Efficient_Carrot_669 Apr 1, 2026 +18
Call it white privilege, because it definitely is that, but I genuinely never thought about the risk of self-reporting my ethnicity on a required form before. I have a sociology background and thus approached it from a “help the data scientists” angle. I will be selecting “prefer not to answer” at all times going forward.

46
Rare_Paper4473 Mar 31, 2026 +30
Most republican youth don't bother saying they're not. Older republicans still cling to feigning outrage and what a gross mischaracterzation of their values that is- There's a large swathe of young Republicans though are increasingly saying: "Yeah, no. We're nazis. You can say it." They don't understand why the older generation wants to pretend it's about anything else. Boomer Reps want to cling to a "But he didn't *say it,* just implied it. And just because he said it, doesn't mean he said it! Context bruh-" Younger Republicans don't even care. They know what they saw.
30
JustDidntWannaGoToAZ Mar 31, 2026 +22
I’ve noticed the same pattern. The younger ones think it’s cool now and counter culture so they don’t hide it. The old ones are still gaslighting us and covering their ears screaming lalala. Both groups have the reading comprehension skills and the attention span of a gnat.
22
Rare_Paper4473 Mar 31, 2026 +8
Boomer Republicans still want to insist they're deeply complicated and misunderstood, deep down, and the left just doesn't understand their noble ways- But at least 1/4 Republican youth and a growing number, all geniunely *don't* think they're misunderstood, and full on just consider themselves racist, and don't hide behind having any real reason other than they want to be. Some are just going to say that's just a fringe minority like the usual boomers say-but they said that about Greene who the overton window has shifted already that democrats are saying "wow, she's really changed." When she ends all her speeches with "I only said all those things because they were true."

I mean to be fair, I'm like 99% certain this is part of them trying to get data to accuse universities of antisemitism in their attempt to curb the power of universities and consolidate power in the executive branch. I don't think they have any anti-jew agenda here. The title does sound shocking though.
1
AnamCeili Mar 31, 2026 +9
I absolutely *do* think they have an anti-Jew agenda, just as they have an anti-Muslim agenda, an anti-woman agenda, an anti LGBTQIA+ agenda, etc. However, you also make a valid point about them trying to curb the power of universities -- MAGAts will stop at no evil, which is why *they must be stopped*.
9
datingoverthirty Mar 31, 2026 +8
This is wild, particularly for conservative Jews in America On one hand, he's the most "pro-Israel" US President of all time On the other hand, he's compiling "lists" of you and your fellow religious followers Hope this is what they voted for though... Can't say we didn't warn them!
8
SlowRunner2026 Mar 31, 2026 +22
I think people are missing the true motive of the administration behind this. They are looking for *victims* of pro-Palestinian protesters. The more people they can contact, the better their chance of finding someone willing to say whatever they want them to say in order to rid the school of arabs and/or faculty who don't tow the pro-Israel/anti-Palestinian line.
22
99thpercentile Mar 31, 2026 +14
And you can guarantee they will act on that testimony alone and not gather further evidence or testimony prior to violating someone else's constitutional rights.
14
Latter-Mark-4683 Apr 1, 2026 +2
I agree, but it is such a ham-handed way of going about it. If the Democrats sued a Christian university to provide them a list of all the gays at their school, there would be outrage. How would you even go about compiling either of these lists? It’s so invasive! But again, you have to have a functioning brain to recognize hypocrisy and double standards.
2
CaterpillarHungry607 Mar 31, 2026 +4
I know it’s bullshit, but what is the pretext for the request?? Like what are they even claiming this is for that it passed a judicial review?
4
wackford_squeers_ Mar 31, 2026 +4

4
kanst Mar 31, 2026 +3
> I know it’s bullshit, but what is the pretext for the request?? Like what are they even claiming this is for that it passed a judicial review? They are claiming they want to have an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) investigation of alleged discrimination against Jewish faculty and students on the campus. They say they need a list so that they can reach out to interview Jewish people about the alleged discrimination.

3
RadicalRectangle Apr 1, 2026 +3
Importantly, a lot of folks don’t have a say if this information is on file. I found out in college that my religious affiliation had been recorded somewhere, even though I never recalled providing that information. Every Jewish individual on campus got a special email, and I only realized when I brought up to my friends how weird it was.

Because being on “lists” has never turned out badly for Jewish people. 🤦🏽‍♂️
3
FiscalCliffClavin Mar 31, 2026 +5
This is really messed up. Judaism is a religion. So he’s essentially asking for everybody who follows a certain religion. Do we really need to fast forward into the future for him to get a list of everybody who is a Christian and who’s not? How about if you’re a follower of his cult or not?
5
BarkusSemien Mar 31, 2026 +9
It’s an ethnoreligion, which is even worse. The vast majority of Jews DON’T follow any religion.
9
jizzlevania Apr 1, 2026 +1
Pew says it's 27% of american Jews and 20% of Israeli Jews who don't practice any religion. It may just be observer bias if you're used to hanging out with mostly secular Jews.  With all of the lies told about Jewish people, saying the majority don't follow any religion is uncomfortably close to insinuating they're unGodly, when the vast majority in fact does practice/observe.
1
BarkusSemien Apr 1, 2026 +2
I certainly don’t think Jews who don’t practice are “unGodly”. I’m one of those Jews myself, despite being raised in a modern Orthodox home. The notion of practicing is complex, because there are so many ways to practice Judaism. Only a small percentage of Jews are Orthodox, for example. I can believe that 73% of American Jews will attend a Passover Seder tomorrow or light candles on Chanukah. Again, I’m one of those Jews. But I don’t believe in God and wouldn’t consider myself a practicing Jew because I don’t keep kosher or keep the Sabbath and so on. Maybe some people consider celebrating the occasional holiday to be religious observance. I don’t really. That’s neither here nor there though, since my point was that compiling lists of Jews isn’t as simple as targeting people who follow a certain religion, as the person I was responding to had said. People who hate Jews don’t care about their religious beliefs. Being an atheist or non practicing or even converting to Christianity didn’t save Jews from the Nazis, because Jews are Jews, an ethnic group, regardless of their religious practices. The Nazis murdered actual nuns with Jewish ancestry. This headline is a lot scarier for Jews than religious persecution.

This is so unnecessary. They want the names and information of members of variations Jewish groups on campus. Presumably there are a limited number of these groups. And at most colleges there is a list of clubs and organizations that are affiliated with the university. Just ask for a list of the groups. Then reach out to each of the groups to say "we are investigating antisemitism, please tell us any members who want to speak with us."
