We really are speedrunning the "boring dystopia" any% category, aren't we? calling a company's disagreement "orwellian" isn't even a hyperbole anymore, it’s just the user manual. the judge basically just told the feds they can't use *1984* as a "how-to" guide for vendor management. imagine thinking that an AI company’s primary risk to the country is... checks notes... not nodding fast enough at a briefing.

I wonder how many people have actually read 1984?

Considering Americans literacy rates, not as many as should. Many who can read, read at a 6th grade level or below. Additionally, many are told that 1984 is only about communism, so don’t engage with the material fully. Many taking it and Animal Farm as being pro right wing views. For those who don’t know, George Orwell was /strongly leftist and a socialist who hated Soviet Russia.

I did in High School back in the early 70’s. It stuck with me, though it’s probably time for a re-read.

the more depression/troubling question is how many people read it, and entirely missed the point. The amount of people i’ve had the displeasure of peaking with who swear that trump will save us from big brother, is astounding.
