Pretty important to clarify that this judge ruled that Trump doesn’t have *civil* immunity. This means that the civil suits brought against Trump by Capitol Police can proceed to civil court. If he loses the suit, Trump would be found liable (i.e. responsible for damages) for his role in inciting the Jan. 6 riots, similar to how he was found liable for sexual abuse in the E. Jean Carroll case.

Great. When they win the taxpayers can pay for that also.

Dr_G_E Apr 2, 2026 +202
If the president's actions on that day have already been found by Judge Mehta to be outside the scope of his official duties, I don't see how the federal government can be on the hook for any judgement.
202
markroth69 Apr 2, 2026 +123
Trump will sue the federal government for allowing him to be on the hook. And the DOJ will settle the lawsuit in a way that Trump turns a profit when he writes himself the settlement check

BigBoyYuyuh Apr 2, 2026 +23
Yup. A Trump NEVER pays, especially when the treasury is now his.
23
Level-Name-4060 Apr 2, 2026 +19
Why bother, just use the PayPal transfer straight from the treasury to their bank accounts.
19
StarktechJanitor Apr 2, 2026
DOGE emptied the treasury into Trump's personal account. Look it up. There's no treasury anymore. It's gone. Government employees that were not fired by DOGE and the military who weren't let go for failing loyalty tests for are in Trump's cult now and they work for free.
0
BudgetMattDamon Apr 2, 2026 +2
And the countless contracts that debit the Treasury have just transferred to take from Trump's personal account? I don't doubt there was rampant looting with DOGE, but this is just silly.
2
StarktechJanitor Apr 2, 2026 +1
Why not? DOGE got God-level access to it. They could simply put in a middleman that going forward all Treasury debits transfers to Donald John Trump instead. Their twisted imaginations are the limit.

Watch it happen anyway.

PrinceCastanzaCapone Apr 2, 2026 +3
He won’t be in office for much longer and these cases will take longer than his presidency to be settled in court.
3
TeriusRose Apr 2, 2026 +3
They will, but that's also why I'm not really sure he will face consequences. Given his age and health.
3
OfficialDCShepard Apr 2, 2026 +2
Then we'll sue his lazy, good-for-nothing children.
2
PrinceCastanzaCapone Apr 2, 2026 +1
Nah he’ll probably die before any consequences unfortunately. Still a win for the world. Then his name will be dragged through the mud for the whole world to see and he won’t be around to twist the narrative and attack his accusers.
1
BigBoyYuyuh Apr 2, 2026 +1
One can hope. Unfortunately after his actions for January 6th you know he’s never leaving power again. It’s why he has the police on his side, ICE, and the military now.
1
thereverendpuck Apr 2, 2026 +1
Wouldn’t be certain about him having the military.
1
DadJokeBadJoke Apr 2, 2026 +1
Have you sen what the military has been doing over the last few months?
1
thereverendpuck Apr 2, 2026 +1
I have. It’s still run by people who despise Trump and Kegsbreath. But they shut up and follow orders. There will come a time when they’re given the order that makes them question it. BTW, go look up that carrier with the plumbing problems again. That’s a boat full of people who didn’t want to see action.
1
PrinceCastanzaCapone Apr 2, 2026 +1
That was definitely sabotaged. That fire was set by the crew. It’s not that they didn’t want to see action. It’s that they were deployed in June of 2025, told at the end of February 2026 that they’d be home by early March, and then 12 hours later told “oops did we say March? We meant to say May.”
1
PrinceCastanzaCapone Apr 2, 2026 +1
He might be dead before the next election. He’s barely holding on as it is.
1
BigBoyYuyuh Apr 2, 2026 +1
One can hope but evil has a way of lingering. Henry Kissinger lived to 100. We could be stuck with this old regarded dictator for another 10+ years.
1
Agreeable-Agent-7384 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Even if he pays, he’ll just get it back from tax payers. Be it a lawsuit with a quick settlement like so many of his friends are getting lately, or a generous donation to his board of peace, tax payers money will be used in the end. He’s too corrupt and greedy to lose a cent.

They are suing Donald Trump the private individual not the office of the president or the government in any way. Donald Trump must pay personal lawyers to represent him, and not lawyers being paid by the government payroll. The taxpayer is not on the hook for a single penny.

It’s important to drag out the courtroom drama for months and years. That worked out so well last time. Apparently the wheels of Justice are slow so lawyers make bank! I’d like to personally thank Merrick Garland for his attention to this matter in waiting a few years before investigating anything.

Every Democrat voted for removal in 2021.
51
dokikod Apr 2, 2026 +40
All we needed was 3 more Republican Senators. Mitch McConnell could have easily made that happen. He was too worried about Republicans losing Trump supporters, so he relied on the criminal justice system. What a joke.

They've shot down what...how many impeachment attempts this term alone by [Al Green](https://factually.co/fact-checks/politics/democratic-house-members-opposed-impeachment-explanations-38925f)?
1
All_Hail_Hynotoad Apr 2, 2026 -3
This is the real test. If they do nothing, then we have truly lost. Edit: punctuation
-3
Frapplo Apr 3, 2026 +1
That's not the kind of language we use here. We push on until we fix the problem. Look, we're going after criminals who've never faced consequences. They've stolen our money, our country, and our very way of life. This has been happening for centuries. Sometimes we make a push in the right direction. But over time our complacence let's the enemy wear away at the systems we rely on. They metastasize and drain everything. But they haven't won. They've never *truly* won. Because deep down, they know it's their paper against our numbers. In an instant we could shatter their illusion of control. These self-styled gods would fall. That's why there's no true defeat for us. When we come about moaning that it's hopeless and that all is lost, we do a disservice to our brothers and sisters who've been suffering for a better day. It won't come fast. It won't come easy. But if we stand together, that better day will come.
1
tuxedo_jack Apr 2, 2026 +1
And don't forget the shame. Make them uncomfortable to be around their constituents because of their actions on a daily basis, and get as many of your friends to join in as you can.
1
MyNameis_bud Apr 2, 2026 -2
This is why I think we’d have a better country if there was true bipartisanship in all branches. Like, congress is made up of equal parts of both parties. If a republican president is elected, he has to choose a republican VP. I’m sure this is absolutely simple minded and dumb but to me, it would force a certain accountability and responsibility to th American people that is just lacking
-2
badamant Apr 2, 2026 +19
You are assuming a Republican Party that no longer exists. The current GOP/MAGA/Trump have no interest in bipartisan governing at all. They ONLY argue in bad faith and are now anti-democracy. This is the sad reality.
19
Ordinary-Egg-56 Apr 2, 2026 +3
once they are deposed they need to be treated like nazis in postwar germany. make it illegal to declare yourself a republican, so you support republican policies, etc.
3
MyNameis_bud Apr 2, 2026 +1
Oh yeah I know. I’ve been feeling this way for many years now. Way before Trump had his first term.
1
keninsd Apr 2, 2026 -58

Shuckles116 Apr 2, 2026 +33
Explain? When the Democrats had the house in 2021 at the tail end of his first presidency, he was impeached for this very thing
33
sinsaint Apr 2, 2026 +16
His first impeachment happened while he was President. He blackmailed Ukraine, and told them that if they wanted the US's support then he'd need dirt on Hunter Biden, all on a recorded White House Line. The Democrats in the House motion to impeach. Afterward, the Republican-controlled Senate voted (after 2 retries) that no investigation was necessary.
16
QbertsRube Apr 2, 2026 +12
And because Republicans refused to convict and remove him for it, he learned he can trade US assets for Trump rewards in broad daylight and GOP voters and Congress members will accept it. Qatari jets, foreign treasury investments into Trumpcoin, deals for future resort property, all in exchange for taxpayer-funded equipment, supplies, technology, etc., right in front of us. Democrats need to deal with whatever bullshit he'll pull to mess with mid-terms and elect people who will take this shit seriously.

In his *second* impeachment, which was for literally trying to overthrow the government and stop the peaceful transition of power, ALL Democrat members of the House voted to impeach while all Republicans except for 1 voted no. In the Senate, ALL Democrats, 2 Independents, and 7 Republicans voted to convict. 43 Republicans voted no. There was a 60 vote threshold. If 3 more Republicans had a spine, Trump would have barred from ever holding office again. He would have faced trials for the crimes he openly committed. The Democrats did everything they could. The Republicans carried water for him. Lindsey Graham gave his “Count me out!” speech after J6. Mitch McConnell said Donald Trump was “practically and morally responsible” for the attack. They both, along with almost every other Republican, voted to acquit. Save your pessimistic nihilism. Blame the people who are actually responsible for the state we’re in now. Vote Blue, no matter who.
11
Shuckles116 Apr 2, 2026 +10
A majority of the senate voted to convict him- 56-44 including 6 republicans and every democrat. But the threshold for conviction is 67, so no real consequences
10
IBAZERKERI Apr 2, 2026 +7
the republicans held the senate. the process of impeachment and then removal from office requires both the house and senate. so again, its republicans to blame.
7
WillemDafoesHugeCock Apr 2, 2026 +26
Yeah man blame the ones that actively impeached him, you f****** waffle iron.

3
spottedbug Apr 2, 2026 +77
Literally the first line from the article says this is in regards to a civil suit. "A federal judge ruled that a civil suit against President Donald Trump for his actions on Jan. 6, 2021, can continue." So this has nothing to do with Congress.
77
XanmanK Apr 2, 2026 +34
He’s a 30+ time convicted felon in NY. There were zero consequences and it wasn’t even questioned if he should still be eligible to be in office.
34

Maybe we, the populace, can bring a class action suit against him
3

Sadly we had four years to do something about it and we didn't do shit about it. Now he's 80, losing his mind, in likely the last years of his life and he's rich as f*** so he'd just delay court until he dies.

Or the State of Georgia. That was a state level crime and if it's not an official act he has no constitutional protection from state action.

They already whiffed on that.

The Fulton County DA did, but I don’t think the State of Georgia made any prosecutorial moves.

Someone in congress could always have done something about it. Being immune from criminal charges in court doesn't mean immunity from impeachment and removal.

7

So you are telling me, that rich people needs to be poor. You would not want to be rich? Poor people don't create jobs, rich people do. Being a nice billionaire means you are a nice person that's rich.
-12

You need to have trust in the American justice system. I'm just kidding. There is no justice in the "United" States.
1
codacoda74 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Civil, not federal. Think individual and states, like the capitol police officers families or state of GA. It's actually huge because stupid SCOTUS immunity specifically said only official acts as determined by lower courts, and here a lower court has determined it wasn't official act. So if appealed to SCOTUS they'd have to revisit the definition of official and that only limits MR PEEOTUS

scoutthepigeon Apr 2, 2026 +135
election fraud is a felony. one that orange julius has committed multiple times in multiple states. he should have been frog-marched back in 2017 for a dozen federal crimes. if obama had sent troops into red states on a revenge tour - "the five" on fox news would shit their assholes out. this traitor is taking bribes and handing our money to his golf buddies while the economy tanks. and now as a bonus he's getting troops killed for, um, what exactly? suckers and losers, are they? lock him up.

Yeah that’s another part. One piece alone can’t do it. It’s many, many parts. Voting, talking to people in real life, organizing in your community, running for office, marching/protesting instead of rallying. Those were very big rallies. Edit: also, what’s your proposal? Roll over and die? Let the fascists win?

I hate the man. I hate what he stands for. I hate his voter base. But what I hate even more are the incompetent court judges, experts, and every outlet that could have done something but didn't. The man is 79 years old. Sure, fine, whatever.. he's not immune. But it's way too f****** late. Like years too late. I've given up any inkling of hope that he will be held accountable for any crimes he has committed. Guys. J6 was five f****** years ago. Not a single crime that Trump committed has been brought to justice. The incompetence of the Left wing is so depressing.

They received Federal pardons, so they cannot be prosecuted for their crimes related to January 6th. With luck they might commit state crimes, which would allow prosecution on that level, but if Trump is still in office he'd probably put pressure on the state's governor to pardon the suspect. If the governor refused, Trump would undoubetedly pursue some kind of punitive punishment against the state, and so the governor would most likely give in and pardon the suspect. I'd go so far as to say Trump would demand the governor provide the suspect with rent-free housing, transportation, first-rate medical care, food, and spending money - all to compensate the suspect for the 'malicious prosecution' they were 'forced' to endure, which ironically was a fair trial by a jury of their peers for the state-level crimes they committed.

One thing I've been trying to point out that I wish more people would realize is that the core illegal act of Trump trying to overturn the 2020 election was not implying to the J6 crowd that they should attack the Capitol, and it was not the phone call to the Georgia governor pressuring him to find 11,000 votes. The core illegal act was when Trump called the Speaker of the Georgia state house and said he wanted the state legislature to meet in a special session, and he was planning to lie that he actually won the state and thus the Georgia result needed to be "turned over".

he should be in prison for a variety of reasons, but treason is pretty specific in US law. what has he done that's specificity treason?

chiefbrody62 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Lol, I mean trying to overthrow the election results multiple times, including on live TV and unleashing ICE and other federal agents upon US citizens and ignoring the constitution in many other matters, all are treason, and Nixon reseigned for way less.

His lack of competence and mental incapability dealing with Covid, Jan 6 event, secret documents, Epstein involvement and now the Iranian are more than enough for impeachment and prison the rest of his worthless life.

Where the criminal justice system fails, the only justice possible is in civil court.

Accountability is only served when people seek to be subject to the law of the land as it is write by the people and not by the billionaires

This will be fun. It means one by one, the police officers who were injured in J6 can bring a civil suit against Trump for inciting a riot and possibly receive damages in the millions.

At some point in the not too distant future he’s going to think that being tarred and feathered in a public square is superior to being coated in orange bronzer. How can the world make this happen stat?

What? Not only was the president famously indicted for these crimes by a federal grand jury in DC on August 1, 2023, he was also indicted by another federal grand jury in Florida in June of 2023 on charges under the Espionage Act for stealing and hiding classified documents. He was also indicted by a Georgia grand jury under their state RICO statute and both indicted and convicted of state felonies in NY surrounding the falsified documents.
