Judge Rules Trump’s Order to End Funding for PBS, NPR Was an Illegal First Amendment Violation

Turns out the law only matters if it’s fast enough to take effect before illegal actions occur and if the party involved actually cares. This ruling is way too late and Trump doesn’t care

A lot of people in here are picking up on the same tension: The ruling matters because it sets a boundary. It’s basically saying you can’t target public media for funding cuts based on viewpoint. That’s an important line to draw. At the same time, a lot of the impact people are talking about already happened while all of this was playing out. Stations made cuts, lost staff, and scaled back local programs. That doesn’t automatically reverse just because the court weighed in. On the “couldn’t they just find private funding” point, they already do, a lot of it. *Most* of it! Most public media funding actually comes from individual donors giving relatively small amounts (\~$110/year). The federal piece was more like baseline support, especially for smaller and rural stations, where it can be a much bigger share of the budget. So it’s not really about whether they can exist at all, it’s more about what they’re able to do and at what scale. That’s why you’re seeing people say both things at once. It’s a win, and it’s also not the end of the story.

Judge rules that system which helped people should not be dismantled. Unfortunately, it’s already been dismantled and a ruling can’t undo that.

Trump wants to be the Emperor and we have to be the resistance. We can’t let him create his empire.

It doesn't matter - the damage is done, just like all these other court cases that he keeps losing due to unconstitutionality - what matters is he did it in the first place and wasn't stopped dead in his tracks. Consequences and law don't matter unless you can meaningfully enforce them. The courts are NOT. This model will be followed by all lawless presidents that follow unless this gap is plugged up legally.

Amendments, laws, agreements, whatever, these matter to people of principle. Your president isn’t a man of principle.

Can we just rule that everything he does is illegal upfront, then get him to prove it isn't before anything gets actioned. Bit would save a lot of time and money.

How long did it take to make this ruling, a year or so, and what impact has it had on real news. Fact is they don’t care how much havoc they create and how illegal it is as they know it will wear their “enemies” out.

I don’t understand how it’s a first amendment issue? The judge is basically saying that the government would be responsible for funding those broadcasts for all of eternity? I am not a fan of the reasoning on why trump defunded it, I prefer they still run, I just fail to see how the precedent will be that anything that gets funded for broadcasting has to be funded for ever basically because defunding it would look as restricting speech.
