Turns out the law only matters if it’s fast enough to take effect before illegal actions occur and if the party involved actually cares. This ruling is way too late and Trump doesn’t care

epicredditdude1 Mar 31, 2026 +511
I remember when I was naive enough to think these rulings meant anything.
511
SylphSeven Mar 31, 2026 +155
Right? Where are the consequences?
155
TheReddestofBowls Mar 31, 2026 +122
These rulings are ammo for impeachment. However, impeachment requires a majority of Congress. Congress is supposed to keep this dickhead in check, not the Judicial branch. The Republicans in Congress have decided to abdicate their authority. Until that changes and there's a majority that gives a shit, no consequences.
122
M086 Mar 31, 2026 +42
The GOP have always been party first. They are incapable of going against the party.
42
TheReddestofBowls Mar 31, 2026 +24
Yep, they'd sooner link arms and throw the US into nuclear annihilation before giving up any form of power.

Richard Milhous has entered the chat.

Modern GOP is a far cry from what they used to be.
4
Bigpinkpanther3 Mar 31, 2026 +7
It feels like taxation without representation.
7
TheReddestofBowls Mar 31, 2026 +11
That's pretty much what it is. That's what happens when the majority chooses not to vote in a major election like November 2024
11
No_Tone1704 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Impeachment AND removal. The first one is useless without the second.
3
coglionegrande Apr 1, 2026 +2
Okay but wait. I know this is not a popular take. But I’m going to say it. But her emails. Am I right?
2
DensHag Apr 1, 2026 +1
I swear to god if they keep up about her emails or Benghazi after all this bullshit I'm going to come unglued on them. Every time. Assholes.🤬
1
profnoir Apr 1, 2026 +1
Impeachment seems like a waste of time, the Democrats time would be better spent removing all the incompetent people from their positions and prosecuting the corruption. Clean house. Impeachment hearings would be a waste of time.
1
TheReddestofBowls Apr 1, 2026 +1
Needs to go further than impeachment. Justice won't be served until they're all perp walked in handcuffs. No kings
1
FiveUpsideDown Mar 31, 2026 +10
The consequences are when Trump is impeached and removed, a court order allows for quick action to dismantle his illegal actions.
10
CharleyLH Mar 31, 2026 +4
Will we all need to send cards and flowers to our allies saying “We are SO sorry…”, or can we just send them as a group?
4

Everyone loves a nice card.
4
KneedeepNTheDustbowl Apr 1, 2026 +1
You don’t have any allies.
1
tribbans95 Apr 1, 2026 +1
It’s not the consequence part they’re referring to. It literally doesn’t matter.. now it will go to the US Court of Appeals, then if he doesn’t get the ruling he wants there, it will go to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Courts decision is the only thing that actually matters
1
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 31, 2026 +27
They used to mean something. In 2024 scotus ruled that the president can break the law. Now they don’t. It’s why it was so bad that 45 got to appoint 3 scotus judges. And America gave him the chance to appoint a few more.
27
PixelBrewery Mar 31, 2026 +18
The courts decided that Trump's tariffs are illegal, corporations are in the process of suing for all that money back. This could have a similar effect
18
Ozatopcascades Mar 31, 2026 +18
Taxpayers will still pay, NOT the orange one.
18
soapinthepeehole Apr 1, 2026 +2
The payment should be the restoration of the illegally withheld funds. I’d be fine with taxpayers paying that.
2
KeyGovernment4188 Mar 31, 2026 +5
Damage has been done, and there are no consequences. Impeach, indict, convict.
5

Which will never happen.

I can still dream.
1
lord_pizzabird Apr 1, 2026 +1
They do. The lesson of this admin is that our system still works, but that it's too slow to react to corruption in the crypto era. It used to take criminals months or years to pull of these sort of crimes. Now they can do it in seconds. Meanwhile it still takes months to years for our courts to get rolling.
1
buttchugreferee Mar 31, 2026 +94
So..... what happens next?  Will anyone be punished?
94
somepeoplewait Mar 31, 2026 +37
Well, there’s an injunction. This isn’t the type of ruling that involves “punishing” a guilty party.
37
buttchugreferee Mar 31, 2026 +24
so what happens when the injunction is ignored? >This isn’t the type of ruling that involves “punishing” a guilty party. violations of the bill of rights should involve a punishment... though I know that I can wish in one hand and shit in the other
24

still pretty impressive
2
lectroid Mar 31, 2026 +12
It will be lazily and sloppily appealed by the incompetent clowns in the justice dept. While there is a good chance they will actually screw up the case so badly that even the current court won’t rule in their favor, they will then make up from whole cloth a reason why it doesn’t matter and Trump can do what he wants. Impeachment is, apparently, the *only* possible way to stop a corrupt administration. Basically, we’re fucked.
12
BeefInGR Mar 31, 2026 +6
You're assuming he'd adhear to the outcome of an impeachment.
6
Daventhal Mar 31, 2026 +3
Someone will suggest he resign. He will respond by continuing to not resign.
3
Temporary-Algae-6698 Mar 31, 2026 +10
Schumer will write a strongly worded letter....
10
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 31, 2026 +1
You’re not helping. Trump is making this happen. People are working really hard to fight against it, and you’re using this as an opportunity to try to flip a safe blue senate seat. Get lost.
1
Elementium Mar 31, 2026 +4
Schumer isnt working for the American people either man.
4
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 31, 2026
That doesn’t argue against what I said. Do you want this to be about getting Trump out of office or your petty grave with a politician you don’t like. Because right now you’re making it about that second thing and making it harder to accomplish the first thing.
0
BeefInGR Mar 31, 2026 +3
If the shoe fits...
3
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 31, 2026
Okay it doesn’t. Is this what’s happening? If not you’re lying.
0
Temporary-Algae-6698 Mar 31, 2026 +2
F*** you what do you expect me to do? Why don't you go do something f*** off Schumer is a washed up useless politician and should be voted out
2
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 31, 2026 +5
I do plenty. I donate. I campaign for politicians. I protest. I vote in every election. So no I will not f*** off. I expect you and other people to focus on the actual threat to our country, which is the Trump presidency. You’re focusing on your petty grudge with a politician you don’t like. That’s a poor use of public discourse.
5
Maadcoil Apr 1, 2026 +1
I agree here. Schumer may be useless, but he isn’t a felonious b****** who is all over the Epstein Files and actively breaking the law, committing war crimes, and making every country (but the wrong ones) hate us. Let’s take care of the boulder before worrying about the pebbles.
1
mabendroth Mar 31, 2026 +2
It’s not enough that seats are blue when the idiots filling those seats are ineffectual and vote based on what an imaginary, Trump-voting couple in his head would like him to vote for. We need progressives or nothing will change.
2
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Schumer was very effective as majority leader. He lead passage of • American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 • Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act • Inflation Reduction Act • CHIPS and Science Act • confirmation of federal judges including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson If your complaint is that he’s single handedly stopping the Trump agenda as minority leader, then the issue is more you just don’t know how government works, rather than an issue with Schumer himself.
2
iPatErgoSum Mar 31, 2026 +1
Funding likely won’t be restored until the GOP loses control of congress. Nothing can happen to Trump aside from possible future impeachment, again assuming party control change while he’s still in office. The supreme court already ruled that the president can’t be held legally accountable for anything he does in office.
1
MaximumLoud2 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I don't know if it matters, the damage has already been done, CPB is already dissolved. Must be nice to be able to do illegal shit that actually accomplishes what it is set out to because the justice system works so insanely slowly

I did this immediately. I cancelled a streaming service and put the same money towards PBS each month. Money well spent.

A lot of people in here are picking up on the same tension: The ruling matters because it sets a boundary. It’s basically saying you can’t target public media for funding cuts based on viewpoint. That’s an important line to draw. At the same time, a lot of the impact people are talking about already happened while all of this was playing out. Stations made cuts, lost staff, and scaled back local programs. That doesn’t automatically reverse just because the court weighed in. On the “couldn’t they just find private funding” point, they already do, a lot of it. *Most* of it! Most public media funding actually comes from individual donors giving relatively small amounts (\~$110/year). The federal piece was more like baseline support, especially for smaller and rural stations, where it can be a much bigger share of the budget. So it’s not really about whether they can exist at all, it’s more about what they’re able to do and at what scale. That’s why you’re seeing people say both things at once. It’s a win, and it’s also not the end of the story.
18
Msdamgoode Apr 1, 2026 +5
In Arkansas. We are the 1st state with NO PBS stations. None. They needed 2 million (in a state that is the headquarters of f****** Walmart and Tyson) couldn’t mange that paltry sum and so dissolved our public stations. No wonder our governor needs a security detail.
5
PBSNerd1234 Apr 1, 2026 +2
The Arkansas Educational Television Commission voted to delay its disaffiliation from PBS. It seems they're giving reason a second chance. [https://current.org/2026/03/arkansas-tv-commission-pauses-plan-to-drop-pbs-membership/](https://current.org/2026/03/arkansas-tv-commission-pauses-plan-to-drop-pbs-membership/)

Yeah, I live in Alaska and a lot of the rural areas will be hit hard because they rely on public funding a lot more than contributions.

Why can’t the wheels of justice roll faster
3
SoTiredYouDig Mar 31, 2026 +2
We have been deliberately told all our lives, “the wheels of justice move slowly”. Sometimes I think it was just to butter us up to accept a situation like this.
2
GoldDoubleCup Mar 31, 2026 +3
Judge rules that system which helped people should not be dismantled. Unfortunately, it’s already been dismantled and a ruling can’t undo that.
3
Worf1701D Mar 31, 2026 +3
Trump wants to be the Emperor and we have to be the resistance. We can’t let him create his empire.
3
ReleaseFromDeception Mar 31, 2026 +3
It doesn't matter - the damage is done, just like all these other court cases that he keeps losing due to unconstitutionality - what matters is he did it in the first place and wasn't stopped dead in his tracks. Consequences and law don't matter unless you can meaningfully enforce them. The courts are NOT. This model will be followed by all lawless presidents that follow unless this gap is plugged up legally.
3
No_Tone1704 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Trump loses again. Surprise surprise. This decision brought to you by the letters F and U.

Same shit every time. Trump do X horrible illegal thing, it goes to court, court rules against him, except by the time the legal system catches up the damage has been done.
2

Now PBS/NPR should sue tRump personally. Not the govt. Make him personally pay for all the funding he illegally took from them.

Which he will ignore, the courts won’t enforce, and the public will struggle to remember as the next illegal decision dribbles out of Trumps mouth. Honestly, what the f*** are Americans doing?! If it was just your own country, I wouldn’t care, but this circus is affecting the lives of billions globally who had no say in American politics. At what point will you collectively decide this slide into autocracy needs to stop? I might have had some sympathy if it was a machiavellian mastermind orchestrating this… but it’s clear it is in fact the worlds dumbest people to still have the capacity to breathe that are at the helm and which a large number of Americans think is not worth rising up against. Fix your shit, please, for the love of god.

Can we just rule that everything he does is illegal upfront, then get him to prove it isn't before anything gets actioned. Bit would save a lot of time and money.

Peacefulgamer2023 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I don’t understand how it’s a first amendment issue? The judge is basically saying that the government would be responsible for funding those broadcasts for all of eternity? I am not a fan of the reasoning on why trump defunded it, I prefer they still run, I just fail to see how the precedent will be that anything that gets funded for broadcasting has to be funded for ever basically because defunding it would look as restricting speech.
1
Xtreeam Apr 1, 2026 +5
Governments can defund programs, but not because they dislike the speech. That’s where the First Amendment issue comes in.
5
Peacefulgamer2023 Apr 1, 2026 +1
So couldn’t he just argue that he is cutting spending to those programs because of the deficit and still keep those programs removed?
1
N2DPSKY Apr 1, 2026 +5
He's already on the record.
5
DD2146 Apr 1, 2026 +1
He certainly could have done that. Although it looks as stupid as the DOGE cuts do when contrasted by the hilariously high spending and idiotic tax cuts he also spearheaded. Probably easier in his mind to just attack them based on his perception of their views and bias. At this point it doesn’t matter though because he’s already given statements that indicate his reasoning for defunded them is not entirely or specifically based on budget/deficit concerns.

How the actual f can spending money be a violation of anything. They have the right to determine what gets funding and what doesn't, actually insane
1
6680j Mar 31, 2026
How? Funding isn't stopping them from speaking. I know that's a technicality... It's stopping the program yeah, but that's not hurting free speech. It's hurting everyone who enjoyed and grew with these programs. Technically they could find private funding and keep airing. What am I missing?
