Five years imprisonment for firing a gun in the air? We have actual murderers and rapists who get less than that.

Think the solution would be to be harsher on murderers and rapists?

For sure. And to apply the law equally to all members of parliament.

Gun laws in SA are very strict. The issue was that he not only illegally used a firearm in a dangerous manner, but that he did it in a crowd of more than 100 people, and had planned to do it as a premeditated action. Where do you think the bullet goes after being fired? It comes down eventually, and it could potentially kill someone.

This is truly a "Hitler Dead" moment. This Racist individual getting a 5 year prison sentence means he cant serve in parliament or run for president for 5 years after his sentence.

Shouldn't be able to serve with a criminal record. What are we, the UsA?

Criminals are citizens with rights too.

Yes absolutely But serving in a public office which is a place of trust and accountability is not a right.

In that case what is preventing the state from depriving you of the ability to run for office? You don't have a right to it.

Nothing cause I did not explicitly break the law by discharging a firearm in a public setting and then threatening people... Dude, I don't want criminally convicted persons in positions of government You are making this wierd

You said > But serving in a public office which is a place of trust and accountability is not a right. If citizens don't have a right to run for office, what is preventing the state from preventing you, or Geordin Hill-Lewis or anyone else from running?

You keep skipping over the part where he is criminally convicted and other people running for office, are not.... I won't be replying further as the SA government cannot reach their targets so over reach is highly unlikely and your circular argument is annoying

I didn't make any argument, circular or otherwise. I just asked that if running for office is not a right, then what stops the government from taking away the privilege of running for office from opposition politicians?

Julius Malema is hateful, but notice how there aren't any Julius Malema in Namibia or Botswanna nearby. Maybe if it didn't take 50 years to end apartheid, or at least a few years before the government decided it was a bad idea, these Julius Malemas could have been avoided

Yes cause singing “Kill the Boer” isn’t hateful

I mean sure? Obviously apartheid was a horrible atrocity. Doesn’t mean that more racial hatred is the solution to that

There's a branch of the EFF in Namibia. Botswana became independent and non-racial in 1966.
