The movies don’t reference each other, but they’re based on a book series. At the end of the Jumanji book, Danny and Walter find the Jumanji board game. The Zathura book picks up after that where they decide to play the space game Zathura instead.

Marvel works up to the very last minute on VFX and other post stuff that I don't understand. I'm not a gambling guy, but I would bet heavily that there's zero chance they will move the release up a month. I'd be shocked if they moved it up a week, even with the IMAX situation.
But if I'm wrong, blow me up in November/December and I'll wear it.
48
MrGabrahamLincolnMar 24, 2026

I think they can & will move it up a week now to get that week of IMAX & get some separation from Dune, but yeah I doubt a full month happens.

That was my opinion until I talked to a few people who are kinda tapped into the process. They told me they don't see it happening, but I'm not here to be right. I just find it interesting that Marvel would put themselves in this situation to begin with. 🤷🏽

I think you're being too generous. Even moving the release date up a week would probably put those vfx artists through hell but I really dont think the suits at Disney would lose a second of sleep making that decision, especially when there's decent money on the line. They'll just tell em to suck it up and get to work IMHO.
3
iAmJustOneFoolMar 25, 2026
+1
You're probably right. Even though moving up release a week would be an extremely heavy lift, they've demonstrated that they're willing to release shoddy VFX.
I guess I was hoping that they'd learn their lesson from F4, which by all internal accounts was a disaster. But, also, they haven't really ever demonstrated that they've learned a lesson as far as I can tell. It was my hope that they wouldn't risk rushing something this massive/important.
Maybe I'm reading the fandom wrong, but if Doomsday sucks, I feel like that's gotta be the final nail in the coffin.

playthegame7Mar 25, 2026

The last Jumanji made 800 million and Dune 2 made 715 million.
Jumanji is family entertainment is going to attract a different audience. Also family entertainment is looked down upon by some movie fans.
Dune is aimed at an older audience, could not bring kids to it (aside from the sex, violence, etc the story would mean nothing to them).
Dune making that level of money is exceptional but Jumanji will be more profitable.

Redditors live in a bubble, I’m tired of people here pretending as if dune is going to earn more than avengers as well. People seriously just need to get out of their bubble and actually think because it’s utterly ridiculous at this point. Keep in mind even Thor love and thunder made more money than dune 2, and the lowest grossing avengers movie which was age of ultron made twice as much as dune 2 and made as much money as dune 1 and 2 combined. People need to realize that the average joe or the average family during Christmas will likely go for a movie like jumanji or avengers and while the mcu has taken a hit, it has gotten better recently and the avengers brand itself is unbeatable. And once everyone sees an actual teaser with many of the old avengers and xmen returning and rdj as the villain it’ll be a different story.

Much as I would like to see Disney's hubristic downfall I expect Dune will find another date. Or if no one blinks Disney will just tank the IMAX hit because its family and international money they are playing for not cinephile big screen junkies.
And if people were ready to stop doing lines of nostalgia we have seen an indication with Wolverine and Deadpool, instead we see the public needs it bad.
Meanwhile Dune is working with the weakest part of Herbet's franchise. There's still a chance they're the ones who lit off a stoneburner and now must take a long walk out into the desert.

This is an opportunity for Doomsday to move up a week and secure a week of imax screens

I’m starting to wonder if Doomsday doesn’t end up pushed back to late April. Disney has so much riding on this film pivoting back to the fan favorites after several disappointing (from financial standpoint, I’m not arguing film quality right now) Marvel entries.
If this performs poorly, it probably puts the kibosh on a lot of money given for Marvel over the next 5 years. I see Feige wanting to do everything to make this go big like Infinity War and Endgame.

They can’t push the film back again, it was already moved twice, it was originally supposed to come out in May they aren’t in danger of missing the December deadline.

Is this better or worse?
I remember some people thinking they would move it to Zelda’s spot next year.
Nope.

Idk man, jumanji is gonna flop if it’s placed one week after dune 3 and avengers doomsday. People are still gonna be riding high off those two films. If they push jumanji to 2027, it’ll be better box office wise because it’ll give more time for them to edit and make the film better and it’ll give more time for us to absorb what was shown in dune 3 and doomsday. Plus nobody is super excited to see a jumanji 3 anyways, so they might as well push it to early 2027 if they want to make profit
Then again, what do I know and what do I care? I don’t work in Hollywood, if they have that much faith that it isn’t gonna be a flop, then they should go with it, I want to be proven wrong. But if it does flop, at least I can say internally “I told you so”

Fighting dune and avengers.
Thats certainly a bold choice.
If they bumped it to jan they would have the month to themselves.

It’s a good idea. Mission: Impossible made a terrible decision to not postpone after Barbenheimer and the film had a huge dip and underperformed overall.

Large-Wheel-4181Mar 24, 2026
You know, back then. The title would’ve just mentioned Avengers like it was the big film, but man have the mighty have fallen. Dune 3 is standing its ground against Avengers and now Jumanji 3 is coming in as well.

Dune 3 is gonna stand its ground against Avengers as much as Dune 2 stood its ground against Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024 (it will get destroyed)

Jumanji 3? This is technically Jumanji 4. And it's gonna get destroyed by Doomsday and Dune Part 3.

Does anyone remember The Watch from 2012? It was a comedy starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. It came out one week after The Dark Knight Rises and no one knew it existed. That’s the date this movie will receive if it comes out within one month of Dune 3 or Doomsday.
1
DiscountWorriedMar 24, 2026

but it's not an original IP or anything like that, it's the 4th entry in a high budget franchise movie just like dune and avengers. One of these 3 will suffer if they do not move, which of the these three though, that mostly depends on their individual quality at this point.

Always ready to see Karen Gillan in that suit.
Also the first (new) one was nice. Second one was really good up until the village.

Yes me. I was cynical but I’ve enjoyed the series. Good action. The actors are actually pretty good in their roles as avatars for the kids. Rock and Kevin Hart aren’t their usual selves. It’s a good family friendly movie.
