Just binge-watched Young Sherlock (2026)

Posted by mysteriousnaive1207

So I just finished binge-watching Young Sherlock, and honestly I have mixed feelings. The biggest issue for me was the lack of real deductions. When you hear “Sherlock,” you expect those insane, layered observations. But here, most of it felt pretty basic. It leaned more into plot and action than actual deduction. At times, it just felt like a regular detective drama. What made this worse is how the show tried to present Sherlock’s intelligence. Instead of showing his genius through clever deductions, the show mostly just tells us. Characters keep saying things like “Sherlock is better at deduction than Moriarty,” but we rarely see that gap in a meaningful way. Even Moriarty ends up feeling similar to Sherlock in terms of thinking ability. Sometimes he just completes Sherlock’s sentences or reaches similar conclusions. So instead of a true battle of minds, it feels surface level. It feels like we are being told they are brilliant rather than actually experiencing it. That really takes away from the depth of both characters. That said, it was entertaining. The setting, action, and overall old-era vibe were refreshing, and I did enjoy that part. The family drama had potential, especially with Beatrice, Sherlock’s younger sister. But emotionally, it did not fully land for me. The show tries to channel Sherlock’s trauma through her storyline, but it feels rushed and a bit disconnected. The only place where the emotion truly worked was through their mother. Her performance genuinely made the grief feel real. That was the one part that hit. Beatrice’s role in the story, especially toward the end, felt hurried. The emotional payoff did not feel fully earned. Mycroft was a highlight. His dynamic with Sherlock felt natural and added some warmth to the show. Moriarty had a strong introduction, and I liked the idea of exploring his psychology. But after that, he did not evolve much. Again, it felt more told than shown. Overall, the show feels like it wants to be about genius level deduction and deep emotional storytelling, but ends up leaning more into action and surface level writing. What do you all think? Did it work for you emotionally or intellectually, or did you feel the same disconnect? I am open to different perspectives and would love to discuss.

6/10 show. Not terrible not great. Possibly underrating it by 1 because of what I think were silly plots.

I'd rate it 7/10 but honestly it's not so good a show I'd haggle over the number with you. It's got some good moments. It's got some silly moments. The subplot across the series about Sherlock and his late sister is easily the weakest part of the show. At least I'd rate it as a worthwhile watch to anyone who likes period adventure stuff. It does fit the mold of a pulp mystery adventure pretty well.

Elementary for me is still one of the better portrayals of Sherlock on screen, especially when it comes to the deduction aspect. JLM’s take on the character was really refreshing

I agree, my only problem with the show is it was 99% murders and almost never any other kind of mystery.

The unfortunate reality is that Sherlock’s deductions can only be as genius as the team writing them.

why they have to TELL us he's a genius; they have no way of SHOWING us.

I was really excited and looking forward to it when it was first announced - Whilst not being a deal breaker I had naively thought it might be a legitimate prequel to the two Guy Ritchie Sherlock movies, until I saw the casting and realized that wouldn't be the case... I watched the first episode and it didn't quite click for me. I didn't think it was bad, and it had some good moments, but outside of the name and time period it didn't really feel like a true Sherlock Holmes interpretation. In my opinion the Benedict Cumberbatch and RDJ Sherlock Holmes more closely resemble the kind of interpretation I would want to watch - Arguably the Millie Bobby Brown led Enola Holmes with Henry Cavill, felt more in line with the world, tone and versions of the characters I would want to watch. The casting, acting, costumes & writing left a little bit to be desired in Young Sherlock, but in fairness, I can only judge so much after watching a single episode. I intend to go back and give it another try at some point, but overall I mostly agree with you

They really leaned heavily on his memory rather than his power of deduction. The ‘mind palace’ part of it was good, but they didn’t really explain how Moriarty was able to enter .. also it seemed a lot like Moriarty was kind of mentoring him? Asking him what came next, what he saw, etc.

Sad to hear it was exactly as I feared it would be. Eventually ill watch it, but will only sail the high seas for it until I determine if its worth streaming legit. Sherlock is my absolute favorite character in any short story or book series. I liked the Benedict cucumber batch version and the RDJ versions. Loved the books more.

You really should watch the series with Jeremy Brett if you love the books so much, it’s a much more faithful adaptation and he nails Sherlock far more than RDJ or Cumberbatch.

It was decently entertaining. I’d watch a second season to see if it finds its footing better. Moriarty was interesting as Sherlock’s friend, I enjoyed his occasional suggestions to tempt Sherlock into amoral behavior. If the show continues, I’d like yo see that thread followed until they inevitably become adversaries. Mycroft was another highlight. Could have done without the sister angle. All the familial story maybe should have been a second season arc.

It would seem to me that the sister and Moriarty combo would cause conflict

I’d be terribly disappointed if that particular plot line isn’t followed through in a hypothetical second season.

The Sherlock Holmes books feature "inductive" reasoning, the opposite of "deductive"... Doyle apparently liked the word deductive and didn't care if it was accurate or not. Holmes famous reasoning skills are basically very specific guesses based on minimal information which just happen to always be correct.

I thought it was great, excellent chemistry between the leads and a well paced twisty plot...looking forward to S2: 8/10

I enjoyed the relationship of the future adversaries but you’re right, the plot just happened. Solid B, B-. Had a good time but don’t think about it at all. Casting was really good though. I liked everyone.

I watched it and just about every episode i felt like could’ve been 10 minutes shorter.

Solid B show with excellent performances and production. But the scripts were a bit meh.

I started watching it because I've been in love with Dónal Finn since I caught his run as Orpheus in Hadestown. I stuck with it because I've been in love with Dónal Finn since I caught his run as Orpheus in Hadestown. I enjoyed it well enough. Middle of the road, but I'd be happy to keep watching.

My biggest problem with the show is the number of times they said “Sherlock”. It must have been 50 times per episode. But in general I agree with your observations and managed to brush them aside by saying that the word Young in Young Sherlock Holmes did the heavy lifting. Maybe he just hadn’t developed his observational skills to the level of mature Holmes at this point in his life. It was very Guy Ritchie which means heavy on the style and light on the writing and plot. Costumes, sets and acting was wonderful, the writing was lacking in complexity and depth.

I skipped it because of Guy Ritchie. I've seen enough of his stuff to just expect it to be cockney gangster shenanigans in another setting. Lock stock et al were great, but when we then get lock stock ww2/ lock stock victorian era etc it's just tiring.

What was the deal about the key at the end?

what were you expecting? not in a sarcastic way but i’m asking, was there another way you thought this was going to present? i’m curious for your thoughts :) PS i think people are overlooking/not noticing this is Guy Ritchie

I thought it was quite good, Sherlock and Moriarty play really well together, I will be very surprised if this doesn’t make it into my top ten best shows 2026
