Just finished La haine as my film bro recommended it and I never got around to seeing it.

And holy shit?! I mean where do I even begin this doesn’t even feel like a film. It feels like they genuinely went to the estates and started to record footage of actual encounters and occurrences that happen in those sketchy and dangerous areas. And that ending? Bro I did not expect that all. My only question is what does the ending mean? Like yea it’s left a bit ambiguous since we don’t see saiid and Hubert get killed but we do hear the gunshot. I’m genuinely just stick thinking? Can someone help explain the ending but man holy shit i think it’s a new favourite of mine.

You’re supposed to sit with that discomfort after it ends

The gunshot isn't really ambiguous if you look at how the whole film is structured. 'Jusqu'ici tout va bien' keeps repeating throughout, so far so good, until it isn't. Kassovitz isn't asking you to wonder who got shot. He's saying this moment was always coming, for all three of them, for anyone growing up in those estates. Black and white was a deliberate choice so you couldn't get distracted by anything pretty. Just faces and concrete and the clock running down. He also spent months living in the banlieues before shooting. A lot of what feels like documentary is because it basically was.

I mean ever since we got introduced to the three I knew what was eventually going to happen. My biggest shock was when Vinz said he was all talk and didn’t shoot that guy in the alley I really thought he was going to do it seeing how before this the whole film he was building up hatred to off a cop.

That alley scene is the most important moment in the film and it's easy to miss what it's doing. Vinz not pulling the trigger isn't weakness, it's the one time any of them gets close to breaking the cycle. And then Hubert, who's been the calm one the whole film, ends up being the one holding the gun at the end. Kassovitz basically flipped them. The one you thought was dangerous turns human, the one you trusted loses it. Neither of them could escape what the environment made them.

Right? That ending hits so hard. It’s basically showing how cycles of violence don’t really have a clean resolution, shocking, but painfully real

Indeed it is painfully real. I sort of felt bad for Hubert though because he told his mum he wanted to leave the estates the life wasn’t for Him.

Jusqu'ici tout va bien. Amazing movie. La haine will always be in my top 10. I often think about the bathroom scene where that random older man suddenly tells a story.

Vince is Grunwalski. Hubert is the man trying to help Him. Said is the train.
