I don't understand how Scott Ryan hasn't done anything since this show. It's been five years. Hope he's working on something else great.

Covid happened
And this wasn't a big hit in Australia when it aired as it was made for paytv, for FX (a mostly unknown channel for paytv in aus, a lot of other FX shows (justified or Fargo etc) aired on other channels in australia like which is why it's on hulu now.

I will forever fanboy over this show and believe it should be universally held in the same regard as The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and The Wire. Scott Ryan created pure TV magic with this one.

Not yet, I’ve been meaning to check it out. The only thing holding me back is hearing that it’s more of a rough-around-the-edges early concept piece, whereas the show version is Scott at the peak of his artistic vision with this character.

I actually haven't seen it either for the same reasons. The rest of the family has, but I haven't gotten around to it just yet.
The show is short, there's no useless filler c***, and it all wrapped up nicely. I hear the ending of the film is not the best, and don't really want to tarnish my view on the show.

…are they not just regular dim sum?
25
vanillabear843 days ago

Not really. They're seasoned lamb or pork and cabbage wrapped in thick dough and generally deep fried (but can also be steamed). Not really the same as what you'd consider dim sum.
13

My brother, scan this whole comment thread. I've had people confidently tell me they're almost always lamb, then others saying they're always beef and finally others like yourself saying pork. And if you look around online you'll see recipes of all three. So I think at this point we can say they could contain any minced meat.

Dim Sum is authentic, but most of the Chinese we have in America is American made by Chinese immigrants. It probably just changes by what was available to poor people when they arrived. Wherever that is.
-5
vanillabear843 days ago
+9
What Australians call "dimmies" are not dim sum, but definitely evolved from dim sum. We do also have authentic dim sum restaurants in Australia.
And yeah, immigrants come over, adapt the food based on what's available, and everybody benefits. Food is literally the best argument for immigration lol.

A dimmy (or a dim sim) has very little, or nothing, to do with dim sum. A dim sim may have been influced by chinese cuisine, but that is about it. You don't get a dim sim at a chinese restaurant.
Use some Google AI to find out all the difference, but essentially a dim sim is cabbage and minced meat, with some spices. wrapped in a dough and normally fried. But a steamed dim sim is not uncommon and will likely be eaten with soy sauce.
It originated in Melbourne, Australia and is common in the Fish and Chip shops, where you might order a piece of fish, some chips and a dim sim or two.
-2

out of curiosity, how much would that set you back?
i ask because when I used to work in downtown Toronto (pre pandemic) , a beer-battered fish and some fries was $15 which made it too expensive to have every day at my shit salary lol
3
3rd_in_line3 days ago
+6
I looked up from the menu of my local fish and chip store, it is A$13.50 if you just ask for basic fish and chips (US$9.66 and C$13.20). While this is not considered a inexpensive meal, it is not expensive either. This is for ordering and collecting at the shop. [Hunky Dory](https://www.hunkydory.com.au/)
It is not uncommon for an Aussie guy to order a pack which includes a fillet of fish, a potato cake, a dim sim and chips. A$16.00 (US$11.44 C$15.64).
A dimmy (fried or steamed) is A$2.20 (US$1.57 C$2.15).
Australian prices are always quoted including all taxes and service charges, just incase you were wondering.
For a comparison, I can't see a McDonalds menu for dine-in, but if I wanted a Big Mac Meal (burger, medium fries, medium coke) delivered by Uber Eats it would be A$17.10 (US$12.23 C$16.72)
I hope this helps.

Thanks! Sure does. Mcdonalds got stupid expensive as of the last decade or so. That said, it's been quite a while since I've had lunch at the st Lawrence market, I have to imagine a basic fish and chips is closer (or above) $20 cad these days.

I had to reread your comment a few times to understand. You're saying "a dim sum," singular, is different from dim sum, the meal commonly served at chinese restaurants?
1
3rd_in_line3 days ago
+1
Okay, I think I understand the confusion, but nowhere in my comment do I say "a dim sum". I say "a dim sim", so below I have repeated my comment, but used the word "dimmy" instead of "dim sim" to make it easier for people to read. I guess that is why I have been downvoted as people's have not read it correctly.
>A dimmy has very little, or nothing, to do with dim sum. A dimmy may have been influced by chinese cuisine, but that is about it. You don't get a dimmy at a chinese restaurant.

Again, the chinese dim sum meal is really nothing to do with a dimmy (dim sim). I hope this helped.

Yeah, I thought this too, until I saw a bag of "lamb dim sims" on retro tv last week, and did some googeling. Turns out, they use lamb!
1
hall833 days ago
I said this under the other comment but I checked the ingredients on a bag of marathon dimmies in the freezer and those are beef.
Could be one of those state based things where different fillings are used in the different states.

Oh. Yeah, and Wikipedia just says "minced meat" which is less than helpful. I always thought they were pork, but there was an old news story on the other night that had some people in a fish n chip shop cooking dimmies, and they were in a large commercial bag that said "lamb dim Sims" and my reaction was "the f***? Lamb?" and hopped on the gargler. Seems it was a thing, I was just unawares at the time.

I love how the show always does something that’s the complete opposite of what most shows would do.
*SPOILERS*
Like when Ray goes to anger management class. Most shows would’ve had him be at first reluctant, but slowly break down his layers the more he went as the show progressed. But here? He’s there for a few scenes and jt does nothing for him.
Another example would also be in Season 3 when he asks the debt collector to give his friend more time to pay him back. Other shows would’ve had the collector say no and then Ray would probably have to kill him or threaten him. Here? He agrees and that whole conflict ends. It’s so refreshing to see an admittedly cliche premise does something actually different, but still interesting and good.

Or another moment in S2
Spoilers
When he loses his cool and assaults his girlfriend’s brother. In another show they might have dragged out their argument, as she gets increasingly uncomfortable with his violence or starts to uncover his double life. But nope, she sees him be unreasonably violent, and having been in an abusive relationship in the past she just breaks it off, and Ray just accepts it because he knows he can’t really argue with that. And then she’s mostly gone from the show just like that.
The show does a better job than almost any other I’ve seen at actually interrogating the protagonist’s philosophy, both presenting believable arguments for why he believes violence is an acceptable means of conflict resolution, but not shying away from how that can be toxic and incompatible with a normal life.

This is directly said in that exact scene. "Do you know who that was? The Magician."
The bookie is *well* aware of what Ray is capable of, and the fact that Ray came in and asked politely is the message in and of itself.

Who knows the type of residuals he’s still receiving from the show - it must be decent enough for him to not actively pursue anything in the 5 years since it ended. There was a rumour last year that he would be working with Quentin Tarantino in some capacity, possibly as a writer, but that seems to be dead in the water with no further updates.

Actor/Writer (Scott Ryan)
The whole show was directed by Nash Edgerton (brother of Joel (who played young Lars in the prequels) who used to be a stuntman (Nash was Ewan McGregors stunt double in episode 2&3), he played the dickhead brother who wanted the unicorn candle and was later thrown through the window (he did his own stunt...)

I feel scott ryan captured the juxtaposition of living in a violent duality so well. Whether that is working as a LEO or in Rays case a criminal.
With all the violence, internal conflicts, teaching right and wrong to children, relationships, therapy, and the mundanity that this human experience can throw at you.
and to me, did so much better in this regard than BB.
