Just finished watching 'Layer Cake'

Posted by Ok_Basis_5054

Started watching just by seeing a rating of imdb 7.2 and Daniel Craig the OG. I want to know how you guys like the movie and what makes this movie stand out? Also, why the name 'Layer Cake'? I couldn't really understand the movie very clearly so any explanation would be appreciated. Btw, even before the ending scene, I started to question what was his name man, have they mentioned it somewhere or not?

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son.

XXXX : I've got an idea... Why don't you come 'round for breakfast? I'll squeeze some orange juice and grind some coffee and we can talk about this like adults. How's that sound? Dragan : Sounds very hospitable. XXXX : Do you know where I live? Dragan : No. XXXX : Well, f*** off then.

I think the best line is when Dragan said: Don't piss in my pocket, and tell me it's raining.

His name is not even in the credits, it's a part of the plot. Brilliant film, beautifully shot, great cast, and fun bits of business everywhere.

What about the movie Belly?
1
WordyNinja Mar 26, 2026 +15
That, and the fact that the actor who plays the "jealous boyfriend" at the end also plays Q in the Daniel Craig Bond films.

Another truly great British gangster movie. I honestly find the Brit versions of the genre so much more entertaining than the US ones. Theres some incredible US stuff, don’t get me wrong! But they take themselves so f****** seriously. Lock Stock is my personal fave of the bunch, it’s so dam quotable. But Snatch is also an absolute classic, as is aforementioned Layer Cake. Rocknrolla was lots of fun, and even The Gentleman was good blast. They have all the twists and turns of the typical Gangster movie, but also the big fat dollop of British humour. The fact we don’t take ourselves seriously, like, AT ALL!!! *”It’s a deal, it’s a steal, it’s sale of the f****** century! In fact Nick, f*** it, I think I’ll keep it!!” “alright alright, keep your Alan’s on.”*

Guy Ritchie is the best guy for British gangster flicks and honestly I don't care what anyone says but not a single half decent gangster flick has been made on this side of the pond in the last two decades.
1
Cultural_Hegemony Mar 26, 2026 +1
Also, In Bruges, The Long Good Friday, Get Carter and Bronson
1
Nattepannekoek Mar 26, 2026 +1
In Bruges is not a british gangster movie.

The absolute best UK crime movie. Layer Cake = *hierarchy* within society and the underworld.

Jebus-Xmas Mar 25, 2026 +57
I am a big fan of RocknRolla and I wish he could make another "Wild Bunch" film SO MUCH.
57
FX114 Mar 25, 2026 +42
To be clear, Guy Ritchie didn't make Layer Cake, Matthew Vaughn did. Vaughn was a producer on Ritchie's early films, but was not involved with RocknRolla.
42
duosx Mar 26, 2026 +1
Tbf Layer Cake could have as easily been a Ritchie joint, that’s how similar the two directors are and it’s never been closer than in this
1
Jebus-Xmas Mar 25, 2026 +10
I’m sorry he was just talking about best. UK crime movies and Rocknrolla sprang into my mind. I’ve didn’t realize the other production stuff that’s really cool thanks.
10
Queeflet Mar 26, 2026 +1
Guy Ritchie wishes he made layer cake, he only knows how to make one film and has simply made it over and over again for his whole career.
1
FX114 Mar 26, 2026 +8
There was definitely a period of time when I was wondering if Vaughn was the real magic of those early Ritchie films.
8
mjmilian Mar 26, 2026 +3
We was supposed to originally direct it, but dropped out. That's why Vaughan stepped up to direct.
3
FrameworkisDigimon Mar 26, 2026 +1
That's not strictly true, They filmed Guy Ritchie's front door.
1
flip6threeh0le Mar 26, 2026 +1
I absolutely love rocknrolla and was surprised to find out it was so poorly received. From what I understand most of what was supposed to be in a wild Bunch movie was turned into the gentleman.
1
NotFredRhodes Mar 26, 2026 +1
RocknRolla is probably my favourite film of all time
1

Someone had a "what's a fan theory that you choose to believe is true". I didn't actually answer that but I choose to believe Pierce Brosnan's character in this is the same as his one in The Foreigner.
1
Business_Abalone2278 Mar 26, 2026 +2
The Adamsverse.
2

Which is funny, because I remember watching that movie and being like man, Pierce Brosnan has played a "similar but not similar" character to that before.

*Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels* is another British crime film. It's fantastic. *Snatch* is from the same director and is similarly not to be missed.

And The Gentlemen (movie) and netflix series.
0
Babydanho Mar 26, 2026 +1
I’d argue against it being the “absolute best.” It’s great but I don’t think it’s better than snatch, lock stock, or in Bruges.

It's been a while since I've seen that movie but I recall him dressing so stereotypically like a coke dealer it was practically their uniform. If I remember right that comment is made in the movie. Were you a coke dealer at the time or did you leave a bunch of confused people in your wake?

TerminatorReborn Mar 26, 2026 +3
The first girl I picked up at a club was using his weirdo staring for a long ass time like he did in Layer Cake lol Still had to approach her tho, I'm not Daniel Craig
3
NakedMuffinTime Mar 25, 2026 +64
>Also, why the name 'Layer Cake'? It's because the protagonist is working his way up the "layers" of the drug world. He gets to the top "layer" with Michael Gambon as the boss and almost gets screwed over by him in the end. It's just a reference to the layers of the drug trade/criminal underworld that the protagonist was a member of. >I started to question what was his name man, have they mentioned it somewhere or not? It's never mentioned; even in the credits Craig's character was named XXXXXXX

Also features the screen moment that got Daniel Craig the Bond job.
40
flowerpanes Mar 25, 2026 +18
Yes. Had already watched Layer Cake and when the news hit about him being hired to play Bond, was happy to explain to my husband that I totally understood why.
18
infinitemonkeytyping Mar 25, 2026 +3
My house mate at the time put this on for us to watch not long after Craig got announced as Bond. Totally understood from that point on.
3
JSteveB87 Mar 25, 2026 +16
And... It features Ben Whishaw, who ended up being the Q to Craig's Bond, too.  Which is amusing to reflect on how annoyed Q can be about Bond when you know how Layer Cake ends!
16
Fytzer Mar 26, 2026 +1
It's got Ben Whishaw and Sally Hawkins, who next appear together in Paddington
1
StillStanding_96 Mar 25, 2026 +3
That’s a common belief, because Layer Cake came out in 2004 and Craig was announced as the next Bond in 2005, but Debbie McWilliams has been the casting director for the Bond movies since For Your Eyes Only and she said that she wanted Craig for Bond since the late 90s.
3
mastakebob Mar 25, 2026 +13
But she didn't cast him as Bond before 2004...
13
Kundrew1 Mar 25, 2026 +7
She may have but layer cake is what got the others at the studio to take her seriously so it still got him the role.

The best guy Ritchie movie without being directed by him. Love layer cake.
47

Ritchie is directing the sequal which stars Jason Stathem apparently.

It's a weird choice and I can't imagine DC would turn down coming back.
2
blindreefer Mar 25, 2026 +2
Well I assumed XXXX was no more anyway. Did the character live?
2
Southernbeekeeper Mar 25, 2026 +3
Yeah there's a second book but I have not read it. At the end of the first novel he is shot and survives. He wakes up after being in a coma and having had a number of surgeries and is greeted by a mysterious G man who tells him he has to leave the country so he relocates to south America. The sequel (which i haven't read) resolves around him in the Caribbean and being coaxed back to London.
3
tazzy100 Mar 25, 2026 +2
The sequel is ok. But not a patch on the first. Doesn’t have the same menace.
2
hemareddit Mar 25, 2026 +1

Ugh. I can’t watch anymore Jason Statham
7
FX114 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Vaughn produced Lock, Stock and Snatch, so he was definitely part of developing Ritchie's voice.
2
mjmilian Mar 26, 2026 +1
Fun fact, he was originally supposed to direct it.
1
coffeemonkeypants Mar 25, 2026 +21

21
lady_faust Mar 25, 2026 +11
And a very young and quiet Tom Hardy..
11
TrueLegateDamar Mar 25, 2026 +40
There's a scene near the end where Michael Gambon directly explains the title. Love the teashop scene, just the way the music gets warbled whenever the victim takes a hit to the head.
40
yearsofpractice Mar 25, 2026 +25
I recently found out - on this sub - that there’s a name for the two different types of music in film - music characters can hear is called diegetic music (or source music), which exists within the film’s story world, such as radios, instruments, or live performances. This contrasts with non-diegetic music, like background scores, which only the audience hears… Layer cake mixes these two concepts brilliantly in that scene. TEN F****** YEARS!
25
SateenDuraLuxePaints Mar 26, 2026 +1
People also use “metadiegetic” to describe those inbetween moments, through a character’s subjectivity or point of view. Not the score, not coming from a source in the world of the film.
1
MisterClinton Mar 25, 2026 +4
The Regency Cafe. It's a great place to have breakfast. "Ten's a nice round number."
4
No_Tamanegi Mar 25, 2026 +16
Layer cake is one of my favorite movies. I've never loved the title, particularly because I think its the reason why so many people I know never watched it. But I love that it puts the film's conceit front and center: there is no meaningful difference between a business empire and a criminal empire.
16
internetlad Mar 25, 2026 +4
It's based on a novel and, sure, a lot of films change the name from that of their source media. I like that they kept it here though.
4
artpayne Mar 25, 2026 +16
Eddie Temple (Michael Gambon) perfectly nails what *Layer Cake* is about: >You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son.
16
internetlad Mar 25, 2026 +9
Layer Cake is one of my favorite movies to the point I'm not even sure if this is a troll post lmfao. In case it isn't, here's the answers in order.  It's dripping with personality from every character, and each one behaves appropriately to their character's motives and not just to fulfill a plot point.  Layer Cake is the heirarchy of criminals and the circles that they run in. It's all one cake, but there are dealers, enforcers, bosses and goons and they all serve a different purpose despite all simply being "criminals" I agree with being able to understand the film, the accents are unapologetic. Watch with subtitles or do what I do and watch it a dozen times. It clicks better on the subsequent viewings. It's also a novel so perhaps that would be a better medium if you're seeking understanding.  XXXX is the only name they ever give to Craig's character. I've taken this to both be a bit of a twist "he's so clever the viewer is so disconnected from this world that they never even realized they don't know his name". It's even the final line. "My name? If you knew that you'd he as clever as me." Also, I think it's meant to allude that while Craig's character *partook* in the life and spoils of criminal behavior, he fancied himself a businessman at heart. He didn't see himself as a criminal and so kept a very private and protected behavior.
9
Reggae_jammin Mar 25, 2026 +8
This is great - only other thing I'll add is that it shows how difficult it can be to escape the drug business, as we already know. Daniel Craig has kept his nose "fairly clean", saved up a million bucks, he's ready to get out of the game when the boss ask him for one more favor which leads to the screwed up events of the movie. Plus, the big twist near the end...
8
internetlad Mar 25, 2026 +3
Big twist near the end or at the end?  Because the big twist near the end was him playing the game, the big twist near the end was just him feeling the repercussions of his personal choices, nothing to do with the game. That's how I always took it. In the end it was nothing to do with the drug trade. Also I just lost the game.
3
Reggae_jammin Mar 25, 2026 +2
Before all that, so near the end - watching it, I thought the boss was just asking one more favor of an employee before they leave. However, boss is an informer to Scotland Yard, and was just setting him up to get nabbed. Plus, the accountant, who was recommended by his boss, has disappeared with his money. No getting out of the game.
2
internetlad Mar 26, 2026 +2

Really great crime movie, stylish, and snappy dialogue. You also have to pay attention to the twists and turns. Lots of great actors and performances, a lot of quotable lines. I wish Craig would've played Bond closer to XXXX.
8

I love it purely for the following reasons. 1) how they all pronounce “The Duke”, “The Jyuke” 2) Morty’s “someone’s about to get a f****** slap” line 3) “Do you know where I live”. “no”. “F*** off then”.

TheSimpler Mar 25, 2026 +2
81% Rotten Tomatoes. IMDb is older men complaining. 7.1 is actually quite high for this unhelpful site..90% of IMDb ratings cluster between 5.0 and 7.5. Hardly a good scale to make decisions.
2
coffeemonkeypants Mar 25, 2026 +2
IMDb ratings really do suck. They aren't based in reality.
2
TheSimpler Mar 25, 2026 +1
I'm actually an older guy too and I like that Heat and Taxi Driver have high ratings but its almost like anything with guys being tough gets 7-8 and anything else gets down voted. Exceptions for sure but much like RTs audience score it can be brigaded.
1
coffeemonkeypants Mar 25, 2026 +3
My problem with it is that movies get clustered around 7, give or take .4. That's a C. I have so many stellar movies in my collection that IMDb has at like 7.4.
3
FrameworkisDigimon Mar 26, 2026 +1
I think most people actually treat 5/10 as being "okay". These people are idiots. I don't want to watch a movie that is only mediocre. It has to be actually good before it starts being worth the effort of watching it. You also have to remember that 70% is only a C in some countries.
1
TheSimpler Mar 26, 2026 +1
Its so much easier to do a 1-100% system like Rotten Tomatoes and while I do value the audience score too, critics usually have much better judgement together than 1000s of random film watchers with their own agendas
1
Kundrew1 Mar 25, 2026 +1
I don’t really understand the hate for them. I don’t really care for their top 100 but they are a better barometer than rotten tomatoes. Generally anything 7 and up on IMDb is worth the watch, ones rated in the 6s are hit or miss, anything below a 6 that isn’t a comedy is almost guaranteed to suck.

I think there was an alternate ending on the dvd too, but maybe I’m misremembering.

I do treasure the scene, with the Cult's 'She Sells Sanctuary' (a superb tune) on the soundtrack, where **XXXX** rocks up to the golf club in a very cool Audi RS6 Avant. A great way to introduce the character.

Loved it. One of my favorite quotes from the movie (applies to the tech field as well): “Oh, and forgive me for stating the obvious, but stay away from the end user. They're guaranteed to bring you trouble."

One of my favorite movies. Well-written, well-cast, well-acted and well-shot. Probably one of Daniel Craig’s best roles

1. It is the best movie of the noughties 2. It is the best crime film of all time 3. It has the best needle drop soundtrack of all time 4. The Layer Cake is a metaphor for the underworld based on an actual kind of cake which has layers; think: ogres are like onions 5. Daniel Craig's character is never named Let us all appreciate the fact there is a Youtube video called [tea pot beating scene.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwB9i9P43cs) Pure cinema.

It's a great flick, but man the soundtrack is also a star. I keep hoping for a vinyl release of the soundtrack, it's such a fun collection of songs.

I need to do a rewatch, but I remember loving it and thinking after seeing it that Craig was a great choice for Bond (didn’t see him in the role prior to viewing it).

Okay but if it isn't the reason then what might be ...there must be a meaning to that '4' in the word 'L4YER'

I love it and always have loved it. I was living in Australia when it was first released and they just seem to push British films more there, so I saw it during its theatrical run and just thought it was such a cool film.

A ‘Layer Cake’ is a tiered cake in which there are several strata - kind of like late capitalist society. The thesis of the film is that it’s all bullshit and you end up dying. Bonus points: watch ‘I Care A Lot’. A stealth remake.

11/10 plus the soundtrack was killer. The dance scene with Sienna Miller was memorable

The nightclub scene with the “You Got The Love” playing in the background is one of the sexiest first encounters/scenes between two characters on film.

Daniel Craig was so manly in this movie. I liked his outfit a lot- jeans, t shirt and a leather jacket.

Cinematic film that got Daniel Craig his James Bond role.

The montage moments, some great parts: intro, Ordinary World, and the ending run where they go to the warehouse right through the end. What I dislike is, how Matthew Vaughn kind of took the CGI base from this and ramped it up in subsequent films. Here the CGI portion was tastefully done, but it wasn't the best CGI we've seen, it was during the ending when he holds the card to the country club up and it transforms into the estate itself. In the next few films he did this, and it got worse. The X-Men films he was involved with were great. But you get into Kingsmen and Kingsmen 2 where the CGI got dumped on and looks terrible. The thing is, he doesn't need it, I would've appreciated good CGI for the movies, but he is talented enough to not necessitate it.

I’ve heard the argument made that XXXX’s name is Dante, based on Temple’s reference of The Damnation of Faust, a book by Dante on the bookshelf/door in Temple’s library that XXXX walks through, and the vowels replaced by numbers on the Layer Cake poster are “A” and “E”; the vowels in the name Dante. Not ironclad by any means, but the connection has been made at least

Layer Cake was an okay movie, but it had two a couple of brilliant instrumental tracks on the OST. [Drive to Warehouse](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_bWxzJcJqg) [Drive to Boatyard](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiFR2RwRAHU). They're by Ilan Eshkeri, who also did the soundtracks for shows like [House of Guinness](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DxRJZz0E1I&list=PLACrjduQziWt39fWJIokbllemv08drsUE) and movies like [Stardust](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-3SH8QZPVY&list=OLAK5uy_neBqW6EfrK38fCwJPiYopSsk8rp470saY).

I rewatched it a year or so ago as I couldn't remember much of it. Honestly I think its a terrible attempt at a Guy Ritchie movie. I once again, dont even remember what happened in it, just the feeling that it was a c**** imitation of something else.

roiki11 Mar 25, 2026 +3
Terrible attempt by many of the same people who made snatch and lock, stock? Ritchie and Vaughn made snatch and lock, stock together. A lot of the same people were involved. The style is about as much Vaughns as it is Ritchies.
