Just started Paradise on Hulu and I have a nagging question

Posted by Technical-Effect-657

Hi, anyone want to help (spoiler free!) explain the premise of this show? I am up to s1 ep5 so halfway through the first season. There's been something bugging me the entire time which is when people talk about the "richies" - I assume they mean the rich people. This rubs me wrong for a couple reasons. It's post-apocalyptic. I mean, I guess let's grant that people in power will find a way to stay in power and find a way to hoard their wealth. Okay, that's a rather large thing to just assert in this scenario. It's not as if there's any new commercial enterprises to invest in. There's been zero sign of that whatsoever. The show so far is talking very little about the logistics of the whole thing, but one has to assume that eventually supplies will be depleted, food and air will run out, etc. Even accepting they kept the capitalistic structure where people perform labor, earn money, exchange money for goods, at some point there are no goods to buy. The supply will be gone. What use can a mythical vault filled with gold or an account filled with bitcoin possibly be? And it's not as if we've seen haves and have-nots, everyone seems to be pretty well off and provided for. Maybe they kept the capitalist style economy because that's what people felt most familiar with, but in practice the whole thing so far has been shown as fairly egalitarian. But lastly, screw the whole concept of equality because this is 25,000 people. They are by definition the elite of the elite, the cream of the crop, the ones who had the brains or the talent or yes, the wealth and connections to be chosen. It's a bit rich to refer to a small cabal as "elite" when absolutely everyone here is the 1% of the 1%. Does the show go on to explain any of this or are they being a bit sloppy here? And not that it's been a big feature so far, just the offhand comment here or there, which honestly makes it worse because the show just assumes you'll take it for granted and nod along.

"i'm halfway through the first season where they gradually explain things via flashback in each episode and i'm confused about some stuff they haven't explained."

Some people are there because they are rich or powerful. Others are there as service workers. They were lucky enough to get picked, but they aren't living a life of luxury. They're still working class, just working class in an underground bunker.

Episode 5 is after they say that the bartender got a house. No one else has said otherwise as of season 2's finale so it seems like everyone got a house which is better than right now.

This is sort of the crux of my point though. When I imagine a hypothetical billionaires bunker, it's just the billionaires because they're evil and/or selfish. Or it's the billionaires with a permanent underclass to do their laundry and wash their cars. But no one has been shown being exploited or abused or whatever. Everyone seems to have enough, everyone's been given a house apparently, absolutely nothing about this lifestyle looks oppressive in the least. Everyone came of their own free will. So if everyone is there willingly and has the resources to live comfortably, what exactly is it that makes the rich so much better off? "Oh, they're controlling information, they've concentrated power in a secret cabal." OK but why? There's no motive to set it up that way. And just saying "corrupt people are always gonna be corrupt" just isn't an interesting answer.

The show is not very front loaded with information. You get information as the show goes. Most of the reveals are later in the season. Some are even in the next season. But these sort of things also become sort of irrelevant as the show goes on. It's not a documentary. If you're wondering how they'll eat or breathe and other science facts, just repeat to yourself "it's just a show and I should really just relax"

You will get a lot of those questions answered as the series goes on (more so in season 2) but then replaced with more questions. The entire show is a 3 season arc.

I'm not much farther, but they seem to be revealing little by little on purpose. Keeps you thinking about what's really going on.

It's kind of the main premise of the show, that their place of survival is exceptionally luxurious to an impractical and wasteful degree. They carried over a class system to it instead of a controlled economy and your place was already determined when you entered. Everyone is well off, not even comparatively, absolutely, It should be Paradise... but maybe some events happen. Tune in to see.

I knew I wouldn’t like the show. I’m burned out on this class premise. Good for if you’re enjoying the show.

Don't ask too many questions, just enjoy the answers you're given.

Just keep watching. The show drip feeds answers on purpose. You are not supposed to know everything yet. It all comes together. Trust the process.

The details of the logistics are not the point and are not addressed. If that's something you can't handle, the show isn't for you. If you can let that go and appreciate it for what it is doing, it's pretty excellent.
