Kanye West's reported $33 million payday proves he still has a fan base —  sponsors or not
Ye, aka Kanye West, performed two sold-out concerts at SoFi Stadium last week. His continued success shows the limits of cancel culture.

I say this as a fan of Led Zeppelin, but Jimmy Page kept a 17 year old cooped up in his house til she was 18, so did Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Pete Townshend was found with a hard drive of CSAM and got away with it by saying he was researching to help the FBI. Their music still dominates most rock music airwaves.

I legit know a woman who gave me her entire f****** history about being emotionally manipulated and abused by one of her exes. Told her what to wear, how to dye her hair. I'm not sure if he hit her but she describes this person as that darkest part of her life. She proudly defends Chris Brown and is dating (maybe now married) to a man nearly 20 years her senior. She seems happier and is happy to be mom to the step kid but when I saw her roll up with a CB tank a lot of things clicked before we had the "for why still fan?" conversation.

He has a fanbase. I think one thing people need to understand is that you have a large segment of people that just don’t care about politics
9

Which is a big reason why we are in this current mess.
2
WuTang4thechildrn 6 days ago +5
I have mixed feelings on that. I do think people should stay informed but I also think that just being inundated all day with politics is unhealthy. Now to your point. I tend to not want to deal with people that are just indifferent or who do the both sides are the same bullshit

it doesn’t really feel like he’s “getting away” with anything - the guy had a mental health crisis. The things he said are awful, but it’s pretty medically understood why he did them, and he’s trying to get a hold of those issues. I can understand not wanting to see him perform, or being uncomfortable with it, but I also can’t blame people for giving him another shot.
-1
mangabalanga 6 days ago +6
Yes all the bipolar folks I know drop Super Bowl ads for swastika shirts on their websites as a cross-promotion for their new Heil Hitler songs.
6
Horror_Cap_7166 6 days ago +6
A much higher percentage of people with bipolar I do shocking stuff like that compared to mentally healthy people. Doing deliberately provocative, offensive, shocking things during manic episodes is extremely well-documented. That’s part of the illness. Most people who are severely ill like this just aren’t famous and don’t have hundreds of millions of dollars, so they luckily don’t have the platform to publicly humiliate themselves like that.

135
Pinksamuraiiiii 6 days ago +68
I think cancel culture does affect, but not to the extent that people think. For instance, it said he made around $33 million. But, had he not been cancelled, I’m sure he would’ve made well over that. Maybe double, or even triple that. It’s all about perspective.
68
MrPogoUK 6 days ago +16
I’m pretty sure the situation with any controversy around someone famous is a relatively small number of people make an awful lot of noise about how terrible they are and must be cancelled immediately, so companies react to that out of fear it will really hurt their bottom line, but actually most people don’t pay enough attention to celebrity news to have even realised it’s happened, and most of those who do know about it don’t really care.
16
thick_and_curved_up 6 days ago +3
Kinda goes to show that the loudest people can usually be ignored, because they don’t speak for a majority of the population.
3
Zestyclose-Novel1157 6 days ago +6
I think it’s also indicative of different audiences. His audience will be much more tolerant than Ezra kleins audience for example or some other white liberal and upper middle class icon. Not that he doesn’t have some of those people who probably listened before but they probably aren’t selling out his shows if I were to guess.

It affect stars but at the margins. If you look at guys that were cancelled like the comedian James Veitch, The cancellation effort against him (due to multiple and credible rapes/attempted rapes allegation) was very efficient and he is nowhere to be found nowadays. Or Kevin Spacey, despite being declared innocent/ not civility liable in court but he still fell hard.sed to be an A/S tier actor and now so much lower. But the music industry is different, I'm not sure why. I'm guessing because The link between an artist and their public is more direct, most people don't follow controversies around their artist. Whereas in most other entertainment category have some gatekeeper who are engaging their money even for A tier celebs.
3
jeffsang 6 days ago +6
Not sure if it proves that, just that a few people are famous/powerful enough to be uncancelable.

businessinsider 6 days ago +9
**From Business Insider’s Callie Ahlgrim:**  If you've only been reading the headlines about Ye over the past few years (Sexual assault allegations! Antisemitic tirades! A shocking number of explicit references to Hitler!) you might assume his career is dead in the water. But if you were at SoFi Stadium last week during one of his sold-out concerts, you'd have witnessed a man who's not only dry and alive, but defiantly perched on top of the world. Literally: When the artist formerly known as Kanye West returned to the stage last week to commemorate the release of his album, "Bully," he performed atop a massive globe-like mound designed to resemble our rotating Earth. The set list was packed with hits from across Ye's career, from the prophetic noughties single "Can't Tell Me Nothing" to "Heartless," "Power," and newer additions to his catalog. He reportedly grossed $33 million in two nights, breaking a record for the Los Angeles venue. Ye is hoping to continue that financial success abroad, though he's already facing institutional resistance. He's booked to headline all three nights of London's Wireless Festival in July, which UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as "deeply concerning," citing the rapper's "antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism." The day after Starmer spoke out, Pepsi withdrew its sponsorship of the event, followed quickly by the beverage company Diageo, which owns brands like Guinness, Ciroc, Captain Morgan, and Johnnie Walker. The British charity Campaign Against Antisemitism has urged the UK government to ban Ye from entering the country. And yet, Ye's latest appearances stateside prove that even gatekeepers who wield their ad dollars don't hold the power they once did in show business. Ye is a multimillion-dollar brand unto himself, and there are hordes of fans who are happy to put money in his pocket, whether by seeing him live or supporting his music. Indeed, "Bully" debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 after selling 56,000 physical copies and amassing over 98 million on-demand streams in its first week. Not bad for a man who seems to generate negative press with every breath. [Read the rest of Ahlgrim’s analysis. ](https://www.businessinsider.com/kanye-west-comeback-sofi-bully-album-backlash-reactions-analysis-2026-4?utm_source=listnook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=insider-entertainment-sub-post)

Yep, every artist has die-hard fans that will still love them, no matter how low they sink. This article proves that Kanye West has the financial backing of $33 million from fans who still have no morals when it concerns him. However, had he not been canceled I’m sure he would’ve made double that or triple. You will always get more bees ($) with honey, then you will with vinegar.

Kanye is unfortunately mentally ill and rich as hell. His Bipolar unchecked and unmedicated will have him saying some WILD SHIT that he could believe in, but most likely doesn't. He has a entourage of yes men in in his pocket, who is going to tell him to cut his shit that isn't relying on him for a paycheck. I used to work in mental health and had people telling me some very out there stuff. Men asking me to show them my d***. Talking about conspiracies that were outrageous and obviously untrue. Claims of solving complex scientific problems or world problems. What he has said is definitely hurtful, but with his Bipolar disorder I personally don't take is seriously.

I think the type of art he creates is also a factor to keep in mind. Hip hop and rap and specifically his music has always had things in it that some people find offensive, so when you already live in that realm there’s more that you can “get away with” while maintaining fandom and other types of support. The bar for say, a children’s television host, is going to be much lower lol
1
WuTang4thechildrn 6 days ago +1
I don’t like Kane but here is something I think Listnook doesn’t understand. There is no unified opinion about n all these people that you name. An example is Kobe Bryant. Not everyone feels Kobe sexually assaulted that woman. I think Listnook believes everyone thinks he did and chooses to ignore it. In the case Kanye and many like him. There are people who just choose to do the serrated the artists from the art thing. With Trump. There are people who will tell you he is a bad guy but they like what he is doing.
