That is the IBLP (Institute of Basic Life Principals) influence, it is Bill Gotherd's perferred look: the home perms and the 90s homemade dresses with the Peter Pan collars and butterfly sleeves. They have a whole manual on how "godly" women should dress, complete with illustrations outta the 1994 Sears & Roebeck Home Catalogue. Gotherd is also a known pedophile who preyed on the girls and young women in their cult. This was widely known within IBLP, and there was a harem of children he kept around him known as "Bill's girls."
Some of the older Duggar daughters have repudiated IBLP and found Gotherd a convenient target of criticisms some of them still can't quite bring themselves to levy at their parents, and specifically Jim Bob, directly. But basically Jim Bob recruited Michelle into his IBLP cult and then they involved all of their children in what is basically 24/7 extreme sub/dom dynamic relationship of CNC, but its not children sexual abuse, because of the long dresses, you see!
They also blanket trained all their infants, as per the Pearl's child abuse instruction manual, How To Train Up. A Child. This is just open child abuse, and Michelle brags openly about it to this day and is extremely proud of the results. She boldly states, still, that Duggar parenting is superior because of all the sexual repression and physical abuse means the children live in fear of their parents, I mean "behave themselves."
F*** these cultist child abuse factory motherfuckers.

For folks that don't want to google it...
Blanket training is a method of corporal punishment adapted from the methods outlined in the book "To Train Up a Child" by Christian fundamentalists Michael and Debi Pearl.
You put an infant or toddler on a blanket with some toys. You tell them they can't leave the blanket. You wack them with a ruler if they leave the blanket.
Their motivation in doing this is the belief that it trains the child and instills discipline and respect in them.
But aside from being literal child abuse, it's a ridiculous thing to do because an infant or toddler lacks the cognitive ability to understand the exercise and will simply be confused and afraid of their primary care giver.

It's actually worse than this. They put the toys just off the blanket to tempt them, and if the toddler reaches for them, they get hit. It's to kill any natural instincts or curiosity they have to make them easier to control.

But f*** them twice for using the "blanket training" part of the Pearl's manual, while ignoring what the Pearls say to do if your husband turns out to be a damn pedophile.
Which is: for your soul's sake, do not divorce him. Instead, report him to the police. KEEP reporting until he is arrested. TESTIFY AGAINST HIM IN COURT. Do everything you need to do to make sure he goes to jail and serves the maximum sentence. When he returns, your children will be grown, living independent lives and he'll be unable to hurt them. He'll be an old man, returning humbled.
...which is naive, sure, but it's very different from the Duggar's filthy Protect Him At All Costs garbage. The freakin' *Pearls* said unambiguously to get the child abuser out of your house!

These adults are sadistic narcissists who dress up their beliefs in religion to justify their sick behavior. They foolishly believe religion makes it ok to psychologically and physically abuse their children, in addition to raping them.
They are society’s sickest and most vile people.
The damage they cause to children could sink a ship. The lemotional pain these kids carry is for life, impacting their mental health and their ability to be gainfully employed. The ACES study showed that kids who are sexually and physically abused are more likely to have lifelong health problems. They get cancer at higher rates and even die earlier.
These sick monsters do not give one whit about the agony, heartache and pain they cause their victims.

The Quiverfull / IBLP movement movement the Duggars are a part of teaches that:
- Male lust is uncontrollable.
- Females (any age) bear responsibility for all sexual contact because they cause temptation.
- masturbation and r*** are equivalent sins.
- Only virgins completely naive of sex are good for sex. Everyone else is ruined.
- Don't get birth certificates or SSNs for female children because they could use them to leave.
- Female children aren't to be educated beyond basic housework.
- Female children are to only leave the home by being married off to established adults. They're not to get a single day of independence.
It's a pedophile cult. And it's tightly woven into the GOP establishment throughout the south.

It is worth noting that in the early days, these people were just as much victims as who they prey on today.
That's not meant to excuse this behaviour at all, just highlight that this is a systemic/generational issue. When you live in an environment of hate, sooner or later you get hollowed out and filled back up with that hate.
Deprogramming is virtually impossible once that's reached. And solving the problem is very much a [Paradox of Tolerance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance), and they rely on that.

I grew up in this culture - homeschooled Baptist creationist etc. My parents met these folks at a homeschool conference. I have found there are two types of men in that world:
1. The ones doing the abusing
2. The ones who stick their heads in their holier-than-thou sand and pretend its impossible for the abuse to be happening because "ThEyRe SuCh MeN oF gOd!!!11!" And these men, who actually are "decent" people, 100% ENABLE ALL THE ABUSERS.
My own father didn't believe me and still doesn't about my own SA. Because then hed have to face the fact that his "God given discernment" wasn't "working" about my abuser. He is so fragile that he cannot accept the possibility of being wrong and would rather label his own daughter a liar.
Im actually more angry at men like my dad than men like my abuser. Willful ignorance enabling absolute evil.
I hope these victims find justice.

My experience was the same as yours, in fact my parents and their church were disciples of the IBLP and Bill Gothard. We had their books and curriculum and all.
You're exactly right about the type of men. The entire system was made for abuse. It set up power structures where women and girls were property, under absolute authority of any man, which led to either every man abusing women or being willfully ignorant about the abuse. There were no other classifications for the men, because any who were not that way didn't stick around.
I'm so sorry you were raised in that horror, and that terrible things happened to you. I hope you're healing well.

The conditioning for women to be meek and forgiving and suffer through anything is strong in that cult. I'm not saying anything against your friend, because she has been through hell, but they forced her to be that way, because that is how they propagate their abusive cult across generations. Their curriculum prescribed beating the willfulness out of children, even before they were cognitively aware or could form memories. It makes for "very nice" people to outsiders.
However a victim of abuse chooses to act towards their abuser or the system that caused it, that is their prerogative and they should be supported. It took me 15 years to get angry, justifiably so, and I'm still dealing with my relationship to my parents even after knowing what they willingly did to me and my siblings.
I hope your friend keeps getting help and support, and that the abuse stops with her.

The book *Paper Girl* sheds some light on this. The author had a sister whose third marriage was to a very religious person. When her niece claimed he sexually assaulted her, it was rebuffed by the mother and the pastor (who had introduced the mother to the 3rd husband). It became a rift in the family with the mother choosing to side with the husband and church.

Bonus: Since I saw through mormonism at a young age, I had the choice experience of having to parent my own parents in a number of ways as a teen. (Mostly in regard to interpersonal and socially-acceptable behavior.) The damage is real.
I often tell people: “I was basically raised by wolves, and now have to learn how to human as an adult. Your patience is appreciated.”

I had to fight with mine to get them to ask for a no trespass order on a major creep. Dude in his 40s came in almost everyday to see one girl in drive thru from when she was 14 on. Always super creepy with her, hitting on her, hinting he couldn’t wait for her to get older, etc. He eventually figured out her schedule for the most part, what her car she drove, and had stalked her enough online to find out her birthday and to wish her a “happy” 18th when that came around, which is right around the time I was made aware this was happening. Somehow the higher ups thought a note to try to move her out of the drive thru window when he showed up was enough, even though nobody cared enough to listen to that anyway. I about had an aneurysm arguing over that one, like that girl was liable to get kidnapped and raped with how crazy stalker-y this guy was. They finally called to get the no trespass order but partially only because I said I was going to do it anyway no matter what they said.
Had another guy working there that would always stand in the girls’ personal space. One he got her number and was always texting her weird shit, talking about how k**** him and his wife were but she wasn’t fun anymore so he was going to divorce her as soon as he found “another sub”. Trying to hit on this girl and really imply he wanted her to be that for him. Just non-stop gross stuff, it took her like an hour coming back and forth as she remembered yet more shit he’d said so I could let the supervisor know, who was talking with the lawyers to get the legal c*** in order to deal with him. Think it was maybe 3 hours between first hearing about it and the supervisor sitting him down with a letter stating he was suspended pending an investigation, but he just decided to walk out instead.
Less creepy and more just surprising was when one of the girls came to me, the only male manager on shift instead of the 3 female managers there that day, to ask to go home because she’d bled through her pants and only found out because someone else noticed and told her. She figured the other managers would be mad about it and make her come back after changing but the poor thing was horrified and just didn’t want to be there anymore.
Honestly being the work dad is the only part of that job I miss. I had wanted to be a teacher at one time before deciding I didn’t have the patience, but I still loved working with the kids there and taking care of them.

Here’s a weird sentence: one of the best days of my young adulthood was when I got my first OB/gyn appointment. Why? Because I went to a clinic staffed entirely by women , and the doctor introduced herself by asking if I was related to my dad, who ran the lab at the local hospital. When I said yes, she told me the staff had decided they needed a male presence in the practice, so they named the fax machine after my father because he was the only man they all agreed made them all feel safe and cared for. I was so proud! When I told him, that adorable teddy bear of a man blushed and actually said, “Gosh!”

Somewhat related, and probably gonna get downvoted for this, but I work with kids in Special Ed. Many of my clients are nonverbal. Every now and then a family will ask not to work with a male tech. It never hurts my feelings, the numbers don't lie.
Every now and then someone in the comments will say "women can be predators, too!" And yeah. They *can.* But we're talking like less than ten percent of the perps are women and this field is *dominated* by women. I'm like one of three guys in the whole office. And despite that, every time I read about a case where a tech or paraprofessional molested a kid, its a dude. Every f****** time.

Yeah the church I volunteer at also has mandatory training. I took it, it's like a three hour long class. Not only does it touch on sexual abuse but it also went over what to look for in kids who were already being abused so you could report it. There was also mandatory background check and there are strict rules about the bathroom. No adults are allowed to enter the bathroom with a kid by themselves. So basically the children's pastor and one of the Sunday school teachers go together and e***** every child who needs to go to the bathroom. If they can't go by themselves, the parent is paged/texted to come and change them. It's kind of a pain in the butt as a volunteer but I could not be more thrilled with the safety precautions for the kids.

The most concerning aspect is our society saw fit to heap money and attention on these sick f****** freaks. People need to stop treating their entertainment habits as if it has no impact on the world around them. The people who watch these shows should be shamed for being complicit in what was very obviously a fucked up situation. Every hour these people spent watching this cult was more money in Duggar's pocket.

Yep, and meanwhile, we keep pretending registry restrictions and public notification are keeping kids safe, even though the *real* danger often inside the house, the church, the school, or the community itself.
Everyone is obsessed with ***stranger danger*** while "trusted" people keep getting access, cover, and second chances. It’s easier to fear a faceless outsider than admit how much abuse happens inside “respectable” systems.
But hey, I guess those little red dots on the map are more dangerous than cults like this family hiding in plain sight all over this country.

Think of a locking doorknob in a bathroom, you’d want it set up so the person inside can open the door but the person in the hallway can’t open the door.
They were likely using this type of doorknob/latch setup but flipped so that the person inside the room was stuck, but anyone in the hallway could open the door. This would indicate regularly locking children in bedrooms etc.

I suspect you're right that this behavior is way more common than we realize.I just watched a documentary on YouTube about a coalition of LEOs dedicated to finding child predators by way of infiltrating online communities. Part of the problem is that there are lots of "lone wolf" predators. The others who form these online groups tend to have a pretty high level of sophistication when it comes to hiding their identities. I'm reluctant to use the word "luck" in this conversation, but one of the major busts in the doc only went down because the LEOs just so happened to find someone who recognized the kind of brick in a wall in a picture and they were able to narrow the search down to a specific area. Most often, it seems these predators' hubris in sharing their crimes with their online communities is what brings them down.
On top of all that, this work takes a very heavy toll on those involved. Going undercover is dangerous work, and, when it involves regularly seeing videos and photos of children being abused, it will leave deep scars on even the most resilient minds.
All that is to say, doing this kind of work is extremely difficult, both technically and psychologically. That may help to explain why this kind of behavior is rampant.

You’re giving the Duggars too much credit, they weren’t that sophisticated. Joe’s victim knew him and spoke up, Josh had CSAM on his *work computer.*
The organized, sophisticated super-predators that get hunted down by elite teams of hackers and investigators are luckily pretty rare, like the serial killers of pedophiles.
The Duggars are just garden variety pedos, and those get caught now more than ever thanks to greater awareness. Historically guys like that were protected by patriarchy, religion, and stigma.

That's what traditional family values are. Husbands all but owned their wives until very recently. It wasn't until the '70s that it was acknowledged that it was even possible for men to r*** their wives. It wasn't until 1974 that banks were required to open accounts for women. Before then, a spouse or father was often required to show up with them. No-fault divorce only really took off in the '60s and '70s.
Before then, imagine all the coercive tools men had against their wives. The social expectation was that men would treat their wives as property, domestic violence was often played for laughs.
Abuse *is* the tradition that they want.

Becoming? Christians beating and abusing their family members *is* tradition, I find the story of Lot’s daughters and the concept of sparing the rod and spoiling the child to be particularly problematic regarding children alone.
Both virgin daughters getting a father drunk to have sex with him in a cave, just so they can have children?
I don’t believe scripture, but I do call bullshit on whoever first told the story of Lot, blaming the daughters for his incest, particularly after he was so very willing to throw his virgin daughters to the proverbial wolves before he lost his understandably skeptical and salty wife.
I could go on, but I think the point is made, this is *the* tradition in what I consider to be schizoid death and fertility cult. Also, the justification for slavery if you sift a bit of history.
That’s why these culty Christians simply ignore much of the inconveniences within the New Testament which is treated more like marketing so they can just slip in the old school abusive shit they clearly have not excised from their baked-in beliefs.

To be clear, her charge has nothing to do with sex crimes, though it's no less creepy. When the cops came to search their house in Arkansas for any other evidence of her husband's sex crimes, they found that the two bedrooms that housed their kids had locks on the outside, not the inside of the doors. This is a crime, and therefore she was charged with 4 counts of child endangerment and 4 counts of false imprisonment - one count for each child.
Her husband had those Arkansas charges added to his molestation charges in Florida.

I know that’s what a “source” said but I still don’t believe it. I think that might be what the Duggars are telling people but there’s more to the story.
I worked with troubled youth for several years and this issue came up a few times and CPS always just told the parents to stop doing that. They don’t have the time or resources to go nuclear for something like this. Either they have a prior history with CPS and they ran out of chances or they were doing more than just putting locks on doors.

*According to a release by the Tontitown Police Department, those charges were also issued against Joseph Duggar. Joseph Duggar's original arrest charges from Wednesday of last week were for lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor under 12 years old.*
Wtf? This is the only information given in the article. It sounds like they kept her captive and wouldn't let her leave/contact anyone to pick her up. And her husband molested her (or worse).

Always amusing when the people with the most skeletons in their closet are the ones desperately seeking the spotlight.

Evangelical Christianity everybody.
If you're not keeping score, the Duggar boys are rapists and pedophiles just like DJT.
Purity culture breeds predators.

It's literally a tactic to infiltrate and influence politics.

It's kind of satisfying to see how much it *isn't working* for the duggars. Usually the goal is to groom the oldest sons into being politicians who will have a massive base from all the other giant quiverfull families. The duggar sons keep being arrested and the kids that get out of the cult end up hating them.

Hot Take: I am beginning to seriously suspect that the Duggars may not be so wholesome in real life.
