> The producer, Media Rights Capital, argued that its losses should have been covered under Spacey’s cast insurance policy, which would pay out if Spacey was unavailable due to sickness. The producer’s lawyers argued that Spacey was suffering from sex addiction.
>After a five-week trial in Santa Monica, a jury found on Tuesday that Spacey’s alleged illness was not the primary reason for his departure from the show, and that therefore the insurer owed nothing. Fireman’s Fund argued that MRC actually dropped Spacey due to bad publicity.
Yeah this was never really gonna work. it was basically trying to rewrite the exact context of his firing in a way that worked better on paper for insurance. but you can't just go "look yes we fired him because hes a sex pest, but he was actually fired because he had to go seek medical treatment for being a sex pest."

Also being a sex addict doesn't make you a sex pest ipso facto.
So while being a sex addict probably didn't help him being a creep, even if he were not a sex addict, he would still be a creep. One doesn't beget the other.

An addict gets fired for not showing up or not being ready and able to work. The problem with Spacey was that he *was* showing up, ready and able to work, and no one wanted him there.

This was always a hail Mary lawsuit with very little chance of success

They struck a deal with Spacey to reduce his liability from $31M to $1M so he would turn over evidence for a $29M insurance claim? Sounds like a lose-lose.

They probably knew he couldn't/wouldn't pay. Better to try with the insurance vs chase him

Yeah he agreed to pay 10% of his after tax income until the 1 million was paid back. Since he makes nearly nothing now a year, probably would take a couple of decades to pay it back.
Even if he got a huge gig tomorrow for 1 million, he would only have to pay back max 100k of that cheque (less because of taxes and other outgoings so more like 50k).

I'm sure an actor of his stature is still drawing non-negligible residual payments, unless he has sold the rights to them already. I don't expect he would be able to pay $30M, but I expect they would have some expectation he will pay the $1M over time.

A year ago his home went into foreclosure and he whinged to Piers Morgan that he can't book anything, and the legal fees (from multiole lawsuits and multiple countries) have made him broke.
He can't even declare bankruptcy since the legal fees and settlement costs can't be written off in a bankruptcy.
I seriously doubt he is paying the million back anytime in the next few years.

His home that was costing him ~$25k a month and was worth millions less than his mortgage was for got foreclosed on. He bought it for $5.6m in 2017, he was unable to sell it for a good price, the foreclosure auction sold it for $3.2m, those buyers had it listed at $5m and didn’t find a new buyer.
He may not be rich anymore, but that’s not really a good indication. It was either continue to pay $300k a year in mortgage payments for a mansion he doesn’t use much because he only can get jobs in other countries or let it foreclose and become the banks problem.

It was such a long shot to win the insurance case.
It doesn’t even make sense to say he was unavailable due to a medical reason unless they also want to admit they fired him for a medical reason.

Spacey doesn't have the money to pay either amount, so probably was as another commenter mentioned, a hail mary to try and win their case.

Would love to know the true ending one day. Hopefully the scripts leak or something.

Watch the British version. It's better anyway.

True. And they got it done in fewer seasons iirc.

Has Spacey cleared all of his potential liabilities now with this (his deal with MRC) and that other settlement recently? Does this mean he’ll stop being “homeless?”

Guys this is a real disorder and should be taken seriously. When Spacey gets that feelin, he needs sexual healin.
