The Four Seasons Landscaping press conference and trump taking a sharpie to redirect the path of a hurricane to match a state he mistakenly said it was going to hit live on tv is still the stupidest thing to ever come out of either of the trump presidencies. Here's the thing - Kid Rock fell into the category of "music you secretly kinda like but don't really talk about it." Most regular people could bounce their heads to a Kid Rock song and even be fine with seeing him live in some type of festival or tour with multiple bands. When he was just being a dude that wants to just play rock music all night, most people (yes, even left-leaning liberal people) were fine with it.
But then he had to hitch his wagon directly to Donald Trump, attack Budweiser for an innocuous ad campaign, and ultimately make himself a complete pariah to about 2/3rds of the population. This festival normally would be selling tickets regularly like any other festival, he'd make money, have fun on stage, and then everyone would go home happy.
But nope, he just HAD to link himself to Trump, and now he's in freefall. He deserves every bit of it for being stupid enough to think it would make him more popular to do this when most artists know connecting yourself to Trump can really f*** your career up.
Ask "The Piano Guys" how doing something for the Trump Administration goes for your career. Spoiler: their videos on YouTube went from getting millions of hits to almost nothing overnight.
144
lykathea23 days ago
+37
Yeah, as the video Todd In The Shadows made about him beautifully laid out, he was the guy you bring out to the award shows with older rockers like Steven Tyler, Slash, or Eddie Van Halen or whoever to bridge the gap between older rock and current stuff. He was kind of the last beacon of Classic Southern Rock in the eyes of some, but he ruined all of that for Trump, and basically killed off that part of his career. Then, his anti Biden album debuted at like 188 on the Billboard 200 and was hilariously a huge flop.

Everyone replying about how it’s inaccurate that people kind of secretly liked his music because they personally never did are missing the point.
He was kind of the equivalent of country-rock elevator music. It wasn’t something most people disliked and it was fine in the background. Which is why it’s been a regular on many different radio stations. You really didn’t search out his music, but most people probably weren’t changing the station either.
On another note, it’s amusing about the whole hitching his wagon to Trump thing because he was already supported by MAGAs demographic by default. All he really needed to do was keep his mouth shut politically.
9
AdenJax693 days ago
+4
Exactly. He had enough fans that still bought his wares and could be on tours/festivals to make enough money because while I & lots of us on Listnook don't give a shit about him, there's still millions of people that were fans of his and willing to buy a ticket to see him.
When he went full-Trump is when he lost the bulk of his fanbase that aren't Trumpers and just wanted America-is-awesome music.

>He was kind of the equivalent of country-rock elevator music. It wasn’t something most people disliked and it was fine in the background.
....what? Are we just rewriting history or what exactly is going on here? Devil without a cause sold like 14 million records. His next album continued on to go like 5x platinum. He was massive. Absolutely monstrous. A household name. Everyone did the exact opposite of what you claim--they seeked out his music. His Woodstock performance found on YT should tell you all you need to know.
3
fluorescentroses3 days ago
+6
Yeah, he was *huge* for a minute in the late 90s and early 00s, claiming otherwise is wild. I liked Devil Without a Cause quite a bit, especially Bawitdaba and Cowboy, and *loved* American Badass from whatever that next record was, in part because of the Metallica colab on it.
I was also 13 at the time, *and* being born and raised in Detroit and - unaware at the time that his claims of growing up poor and being from the city were bullshit lies - loved how many Detroiters (or Metro-Detroiters) were making it around that time (The White Stripes/Jack White, Eminem, Uncle Kracker, Ty Stone, etc).
I still enjoy the *type* of music he made back then (but then I'm a trash human who genuinely still likes nu metal and rap-rock), but very quickly lost interest in him specifically.
6
Tibbaryllis23 days ago
+7
I entirely agree he *was* huge.
I’m just saying more recently, after his peak, either you liked his music still or at the very least it was largely not disliked. At absolute minimum, he wasn’t something most people would actively avoid.
He easily could have sailed through his later life continuing to do festivals and whatnot.
And now that has obviously changed and he gained nothing in this exchange.

Although he may have paved the way for what some now call bro country with his cowboy song, I would say the parts that folks are bobbing their heads to are mostly actually samples that he uses, such as "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon, which are those bangers.

I’d go for if he’s willing to pay to be seat filler. My rate is $20k a day or $50k for the entire festival plus travel and meal expenses.

Well no shit. His tickets are more expensive than Taylor Swift’s era tour tickets were initially.

It must be some kind of feeling to be at the absolute peak in popularity at one point and then now offering discounts to your music festival. I hope he has the day he deserves.

There’s only so many times you can sit through watching a 50+ year old sing “American Badass.” His discography aged like almond milk without preservatives.

Ugh I’d rather go hang out in a parking lot with Juggalos.

Everyone say it with me now...
EVERYTHING TRUMP TOUCHES DIES
In this case I'm not sad to see Kid Rock's career be his latest victim.

I would pay 100 bucks to not go to a Kid Rock concert.
