This feels like a nothing burger. NK has publicly supported the one China policy forever.

Actually, as a Chinese I knew there are beef in the history ... NK used to get along with Soviet better than China in the cold war since USSR provide much more oil and economic supports. And when USSR collapsed and NK is struggling, China officially make diplomatic and economic contacts with ROK, which greatly pissed off NK, there are even rumors that NK may want to recognized ROC as independent nation at that time for retaillations. With this news, I think NK is finally let go of that history

The South Korea Ministry of Unification says that it's significant, and they would know more than listnookors would.

A large portion of conquered territories by china under communism they justify saying it was always theirs because they invaded x hundred years ago. What is stopping them from doing that to north korea ? Hmm

Everyone forgets that *if China invades Taiwan*, North Korea also springs into action. US allies would have to fight a two front war. And with the current capabilities and economic uncertainties of the US, I’m not sure this is possible.

Maybe there will be one big sweep in East Asia where they are gonna Take South Korea and Taiwan because they know that American military is essentially headless.

Sanctions on North Korea have effectively come to an end, and it is now moving to engage in broader trade with China. South Korea should amend its constitution to remove the peaceful unification clause and allow the president to carry out preemptive strikes. South Korea should attack North Korea while it still has the capacity to do so.

South Korea preemptively attacking North Korea would make all the propaganda NK has been feeding their citizens for the past 70 years retroactively true.

If nuclear weapons are eliminated with a preemptive strike early on, that would be enough. Considering North Korea’s military capabilities, the locations where their nuclear weapons are likely to be are fairly obvious. If those places are destroyed with a preemptive strike, North Korea would be nothing. The bigger issue afterward would be refugees from North Korea flooding into China or South Korea. If that’s undesirable, another option would be for South Korea to develop its own nuclear weapons. People tend to overestimate North Korea’s conventional military power, but if it really had that level of deterrence, there would have been no reason for it to develop nuclear weapons in the first place. Given the poor road conditions and unreliable power supply, it’s unlikely their weapons are properly maintained, and in terms of air combat, South Korea already has overwhelming superiority. Seoul might take some hits, but that’s about it.

NK has over 1000 artillery pieces near the dmz that are pointed at SK and within striking distance of Seoul. nukes don't really matter if they get attacked

Why doesn’t South Korea strike North Korea? This is so frustrating it’s driving me crazy. I know well because I served on the front lines. There are a lot of mountains up there. They’ve drilled tunnels into them and set up artillery positions. But those would all get destroyed early in a war.

...because there's 1000 artillery pieces pointed at a densely populated city of 9.6 million people

The North Korean military has to pull those out, position the artillery, and fire. It’s not something they can just shoot instantly. There’s a whole preparation process, and all of that is being monitored by the South Korean military. If such movements are detected, a preemptive strike is launched immediately. Without nuclear weapons, North Korea is nothing.

oh my god bro, have you researched this topic at all? they're already in position, and there's 1000 of them. they also have around 10,000 more artillery they could move into position. how are you gonna pre-emptively strike 1000 positions before they fire on you? and even if you did, they could just roll some of those other 10,000 into position. millions of people would die. you really think SK hasn't thought about this?

Just because they have a large artillery force doesn’t mean they can operate all of it at once. North Korea hides most of it in tunnels, and South Korea has identified those locations. South Korea’s bunker-buster munitions would strike them in a concentrated attack. Do you think the South Korean military would just sit still…? Why do so many people keep exaggerating the North Korean military? Are you a foreigner?

NK has 1.2 million enlisted in their army and 5 million reserves. you think they can't operate 1000 pieces of artillery? I'm done talking to you, you're just coming up with these wild ideas that have no basis in reality. wannabe listnookor military strategist who hasn't researched anything about this topic

And North Korea doesn’t really have an air defense network… they can’t stop it. They’d just get hit by everything South Korea fires, and Kim Jong-un knows that. That’s why they cling to nuclear weapons.

Uhm, North Korea has nukes, in order to defend its sovereignty That’s why the US doesn’t do any silly shit to them, like they do other dictatorships

Might also have something to do with China being next door to NK.

That time is already gone. It has not the capacity to do anything without bleeding. But I'm not a general

If that’s not possible, then getting closer to China or Russia would be the way, since North Korea needs to be controlled.
