King of the Hill referenced my real-life farm accident—this is actually me.

Posted by JohnThompsonND

I recently found this clip from King of the Hill and didn’t even realize they were referencing my story. I lost my arms in a farm accident years ago, and I actually did call 911 using my nose at first, then a pencil with my teeth. Just thought it was wild to see it mentioned in a show like this.

I love the idea that you watched them make a joke about a guy losing both arms in a tractor accident and then calling 911 with a pencil in his mouth and thought “haha I wonder who that’s about”

farms are crazy. happens all the time. I'm currently making a joke, but starting to wonder if this is not too far from truth.

I worked a project in a small city that's the central hub of a LOT of surrounding rural farmland. It's crazy just how many people I saw missing fingers, hands, arms, feet or legs. Sometimes multiple. Had safety inspectors swing by while we were raising scaffold and advise me they'd be returning to inspect once the scaff was up, to make sure everything was to code. The day he returned, we'd barely started to walk the perimeter before he got a call, apologised and said he had to go, a farmhand had both arms caught up in a harvester. It's not far from the truth at all, farm machinery is crazy dangerous.

Yes, they are. Luckily I was able to get mine reattached very rare that happens with both.

131
JohnThompsonND Mar 29, 2026 +226
I have fairly good use of them for what they’ve been through. But nothing like normal arms.
226
carmium Mar 29, 2026 +41
Probably (?) better than prosthetics, I suppose, but I know something of how fussy the enervation of hands is. One would imagine that's still a challenge for traumatic amputations today. Wishing you all the best from North Vancouver, John! I hope life went well for you after your injury. 🙋‍♀️
41
JohnThompsonND Mar 29, 2026 +14
Actually, the first few days they want to take one of my arms off because it wasn’t circulating and turning pink. And I told him no I said I would rather die than lose my arm. And then eventually started trying to peek and was able to keep it.

nitromen23 Mar 29, 2026 +7
The way you phrased that sounds so familiar I swear they must have used your story in some sort of medical show I watched too, either The Resident or New Amsterdam

How do they work? Do you have full functionality or something like 50%?
13
JohnThompsonND Mar 29, 2026 +29
I don’t really know I mean, I do pretty much everything I need to on my own. I just have to do things a little bit differently. My hands are always in a fest. I can always squeeze not extend.
29
Zigoia Mar 29, 2026 +6
If you don’t mind me asking I’d be curious how much sensation you retain with your hands/arms? Did more feeling return with time?
6
JohnThompsonND Mar 29, 2026 +10
I can tell hot and cold in my hands, but my forearms I don’t have as much feeling in. It’s kind of like they’re sleep all the time if he touched it’s like little needles poking you.

2
SaintGrobian Mar 29, 2026 +3
That's wild, I've heard that story referenced in several different contexts.
3
Kaldricus Mar 30, 2026 +16
The fact that someone had the capability to have both of their arms, say "I'm not dying today", think to be able to try and call 911 using their nose, , fail, repeat "I'm NOT dying today", think of a DIFFERENT way to try and call 911, and finally succeed. I would absolutely just lay there and f****** die.
16
RedRising1917 Mar 30, 2026 +4
Farmers are legit a different breed. I've got multiple nurses and a few farmers in my family and the shit I've heard is crazy. My own personal story with one is a dude sat down at my bar rail, but the seat came off as he was pulling it up underneath him, his thumb got trapped between the seat and the sheer metal railing underneath it, cut off the tip of his thumb. He calmly said he was bleeding, so I just immediately ran to the back to grab him a bandaid. He goes "I think I might need more than that" and held up his f****** decapitated thumb with the tip of it in his other hand. I said "oh my f****** God" ran to grab a manager and fought off a panic attack in the back, he drove himself to the hospital.

My nephew died in an accident and a few years later I was watching a movie and the main character read about the accident out loud from a newspaper. It was like a gut-punch and I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
5
DutchUncleMike Mar 30, 2026 +5
I remember reading the story of your accident. And the one thing that stuck with me was deciding to sit in the tub because you didn't want to get blood on your mom's new carpet (or white carpet). I remember discussing it among a few people (we were kids reading about the accident) we all kind of came to the conclusion that that's not a thought we would have had. But everyone I knew growing up, used that pencil dialing reference to mean "that's how far I'll go to accomplish this goal/task". You were a symbol of strength and perseverance. But as an adult, I've been in and seen accidents where shock makes you do the craziest things, or focus on things that aren't of crucial importance at that moment. Also, as an adult, I may have taken the wrong lessons and impressions away from that story. But then again, living in a rural farming community, we were used to Ranchers that had horrible accidents and usually made it through. We didn't see it as horrible. It was a reinforcement of don't touch the PTO or other spinning bits by yourself. You became a h******* guy in our eyes.

I’m sure it’s a trial to be so well-known but as someone who grew up on a farm thank you for sharing your story. I have 7 siblings and it would have been so traumatizing if that happened to someone in my family. My dad always emphasized the dangers surrounding anything with a PTO. Hearing about your accident magnified the caution we used with machinery. I hope you continue to publicize the dangers of being casual about using farm machinery. Also the importance of farm chores being age-appropriate so children stay safe. So many children really love helping around the farm but need to know the dangers.

That’s awesome! I was familiar with your story, but never made the connection. You have the same first and last name as my dad and grandpa.

Trendelthegreat Mar 29, 2026 +2
You seem to be popping up a lot around here recently  Did you have a movie/album/podcast coming out soon?

Sven_88 Mar 29, 2026 +2
I read this as ant farm accident and was very confused. Glad you’re doing ok!

SPKmnd90 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Holy c***, I've read about you before. Hope you're doing well. Crazy that the joke has flown under your radar for all these years!

witchitieto Mar 29, 2026 +2
I remember for some reason our creative writing teacher in high school showing us a VHS recording of your feature on the Phil Donahue show
2
JohnThompsonND Mar 30, 2026 +3
Phil. Donahue was my first talk show I did. That was in New York.

this kind of thing happens constantly with mike judge shows since they just pull half their scripts from local news archives anyway. it is wild that they kept the pencil detail in there though. honestly most writers would have cut that for being too unrealistic for a sitcom guest bit.

jamesmcdash Mar 29, 2026 +2
I really enjoyed the /r/dollop on you. You're a badass that wouldn't give up, go you!
2
JohnThompsonND Mar 30, 2026 +2
I enjoyed that one too. I contacted them and they were afraid I was mad.
2
monchota Mar 29, 2026 +2
Holy shit, I wrote a report on this when I was in school. Hope you are doing well!!!

alb0401 Mar 29, 2026 +2

2
RJWolfe Mar 29, 2026 +2
Holy shit. I heard of you from the Dollop. How are you man?
2
bogibney1 Mar 29, 2026 +2
First heard about you in the Dollop. Glad to know you can enjoy king of the hill.

chipbones Mar 29, 2026 +2
Pretty sure I saw your story dramatized on an episode of Rescue 911 or a similar tv show back in the day.
2
grahamulax Mar 29, 2026 +2
That’s so cool! I mean, not the accident of course. Wild story and had no idea it was even true. Now I’ll scream your name when watching that episode :) you will live on FOREVER!!!
2
King_Allant Mar 29, 2026 +2
Your story was also basically plagiarized by The Good Doctor in season 3 episodes 18 and 19. I recognized it immediately.
2
npbruns1 Mar 29, 2026 +2
I had the police show up to my house when I was home alone because I did something dumb as a kid lol. I was 8 and that episode had just rerun on tv so I tried dialing 911 a few times with my nose and eventually got it. I freaked out when they answered so quickly and hung up. They came out and knocked on my door. Fun times 🤣
2
JohnThompsonND Mar 30, 2026 +2
That is hilarious. I’m sorry I got you in trouble lol
2
AnthomX Mar 29, 2026 +2
Holy Shit! I remember reading about you! Your journey has been absolutely crazy. I feel like I am meeting a real life celebrity lol. I am glad you are doing good, I remember watching that and thinking about you. I wish you the best!
2
beanner468 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Same here, I always wondered what had happened as you were growing up after your accident. If you had a good support system, if you were able to manage well. I certainly wish you the best!!

kr85 Mar 29, 2026 +2
You are my hero!
2
rnilbog Mar 29, 2026 +2
Did Randy Travis write a song about it claiming it happened to him?

TimeisaLie Mar 29, 2026 +2
Next step is killing fitty men, get a reference in the fourth season of the revival.
2
toastbutteryum Mar 29, 2026 +2
I just wanted to say hello and wish you the best. Your story is incredible and it’s hilarious that you recognized yourself in an animated show.
2
nihilishim Mar 29, 2026 +2
Thats actually wild,
2
mamallama12 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Yeah, you're famous. How are you doing now?
2
JohnThompsonND Mar 30, 2026 +2
Doing well, you can follow me on my socials to learn more.
2
cambriansplooge Mar 29, 2026 +2
I read about you on Cracked over a decade ago
2
PvtDeth Mar 29, 2026 +2
I mean, you're pretty famous. I'm not sure if other fiction shows have mentioned you, but I've heard your story many times in person. I had a particular bad day at work once, the first order is ever had at that job. It was maybe 1.4% as bad as your day. I told people I was glad for it, because then, no matter what happened after that, they could say, "Well at least it's not as bad as that one day." So, and least you have that going for you.
2
APiousCultist Mar 29, 2026 +2
Just looked at your profile. Incredible that that they were able to reattach them successfully.
2
AnderuJohnsuton Mar 29, 2026 +2
Think about now, most people don't even have land lines anymore so there's not many phones out there with physical buttons. How could someone get their cell phone out of their pocket with no arms? I guess you could shout "hey [digital assistant name here] dial 911!" and hope for the best as you try to talk to your hip.
2
Cyrano_Knows Mar 30, 2026 +2
Well I'd be screwed if I had to push buttons on a phone with my nose ;) I need to use you as an example when I inevitably rail against the "bUt thEy shoULd HAvE dieD froM tHeir wounDs" people whining about a show. Yes, they *could* have died from their wounds, but they didn't. Hence the show being based on their life. But also, respect.
2
neggbird Mar 30, 2026 +2
I remember this story (the real one with you, not King of the Hill lol) from way back. I think my elementary school teacher was talking about it!

Wow. Crazy. Your story is amazing, and you are an inspiration, etc.. I’m wondering though. I’ve seen a lot of you lately, I don’t know where I guess just video pop-ups or whatever but I literally have never heard of you and in the past few months I’ve seen you all over the place. Did something change in your life recently or did you start doing more interviews or something?
2
JohnThompsonND Mar 30, 2026 +2
It might be me you’re seeing on TikTok and other places. One of my videos took off recently and over the last couple weeks it’s been shared around a lot—about 30 million views across platforms. So it’s kind of showing up everywhere right now.
2
PartyPorpoise Mar 30, 2026 +2
… I had no idea that they were referencing a real story. I thought it was a joke. That’s crazy.
2
tooshpright Mar 30, 2026 +2
Well done you. I am amazed you didn't bleed out while looking for the pencil. The whole experience must have been awful.
2
JohnThompsonND Mar 30, 2026 +2
Wasn’t the best but could have been much worse
2
kylekornkven Mar 30, 2026 +2
I'm from ND too. Lived here when you had your accident. I worked on my grandpa's farm at the time. You made it impossible to complain about anything for quite a while. Hope you are doing well.
